Japan is very overpopulated and has a very low standard of living as a result. They need to kill off at least a half of their population and start over.

Japan is overpopulated. It's the population of France + Germany in the livable space of Benelux, the amount of food, energy and supplies they import is staggering. It's a mini China and at least China has a shitload of mines and a shitload of farmlands (albeit with poor soil).

The main reason as to why they don't have kids is because housing is unfordable and not like us with the gender role/depravity thing. And housing is unfordable because of the overpopulation. Couples don't live together because they end up working too far from each other housing, etc… And the price of apartments with more than one bedroom is ridiculous.

-40 millions means they would still be the 3rd most populated "civilized" country after the US and Russia…

That's not .98… not by a long shot, and that's not actually Japan USABLE land.
Japan is an extremely mountainous country that's only topped of by places like Austria or Switzerland. 72% of those 364,485km² are mountains and tall mountains… Japan, despite being an archipelagos nation where you're hardly ever at more than 100km from the sea, has an average elevation of 438 m… more than nearly all European countries.
And out of those 91,121km² of usable lands well some of it has to have crops on it (about 25,000km²)… so you're left with 66,121km² (West Virginia) except with 3 times the population of California.

Which is about 66,121km² of skyscrapers, because the actual density is 2000+ people per square kilometer (so… 2 people per square meter, factoring the roads that easily take 25% of the space for 9m², which is a prison cell like apartment for one you need 27 floors to lodge them)…

Only about 5% of Japan is usable
