You gotta have people to play against in fighting games, and it's nice having a variety of people of varying degrees of skill and dedication. Overall we just like fighting games and jump from game to game constantly. Sadly he is more inclined to stick to fighting games with more cute girls in them, except for Arcana Heart 3 LM. There are good ways to handle an anime style such as Arcsys fighters. There are good ways to handle a girl-centric cast, such as Skullgirls.

And then there's Vanguard Princess, which falls into none of these categories. A dose of gross, exaggerated anime styling plus the skimpy/full out nudity does not a respectable game make. Your game can be the most solid title in years and if the style is vomit then nobody will give a shit.

Vanguard Princess "failed" because it's a little doujin game with no netplay made by a single developer that was never intended to have an audience larger than the couple-hundred that originally downloaded the game FOR FREE on his website. That he managed to scam a bunch of westerners by putting a Steam version up that you have to pay for was a success in itself.

There are lots of reasons why VanPri failed.
None of this appeals to people used to anime fighters. Anime styling (especially to VP's extent) doesn't appeal to SF babbies. The game has no features so it won't appeal to casual players, and it has no flashy shit so it won't appeal to actual casuals. Whatever potential audience you're left with after all that are just going to treat it as a curiosity and get back to whatever they're really playing.

Doesn't help that it's made in a literally worse than MUGEN engine.

You can play online just like Melty Blood before it came to Steam. It just requires some effort, and even then CCCaster was easy to use in Melty. But yeah there's no reason to get good when there's no scene.

I don't even see how it even failed in the first place. It's a free game. So was the DLC that added some cool cut-in animations for the supers. I don't think it was even intended to be big. A single Resident Evil dev decided to make a ecchi fighting game and so he did. It only "failed" for the people who wanted it to be bigger.

My biggest problem beyond them being kinda douchey about updating and changing art is that MikeZ is an ass who thinks he's the god of fightans. He doesn't understand what stun was for and then uses obscure use cases to justify his position, which basically boils down to every game should be Skullgirls. I like SG. Eliza's ending was incredible, Double is my favorite girl, and I wanted to see her angry as hell that Eliza killed her daughters. Plus, a three-way between Black Dahlia, Blood Eliza and Marie.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought Eliza's ending was way too good to end where it did. Everyone else's that I can remember ended pretty cleanly. I would like more story/more characters to play as but I don't think that's going to happen for a long ass time.

My backlog is already big enough as it is and I know with any game available for free you get what you pay for unless it's some amateur dev passion project. If a game is available for free, there's always a catch and I have better things to do than play a fighting game that will flash all this stuff at me when I don't care about that in this context. Maybe back in the 90s I would have just played a game just becuase hey what other options would one have and with a budget. These days there's no need to force yourself to play something you feel will be a mediocre experience cus there's already literally hundreds and hundreds of easily accessible games at your disposal.
