I read about half way down and so far no one has posited the obvious technical matter: these "views" are most likely connections that have come across via DoS or DDoS attacks. Lord knows a lot of that activity originates in Asia. The simplest explanation is that these large media sites are under long term sustained DDoS attacks and that they own firewalls or other DDoS mitigation tools on the network that simply drops the connection, which the initiating computer would then reattempt connections over and over again, hence all the "views". It would be difficult to parse whether these "views" came from computers with good intentions (people) or bad intentions (malware / DDoS infected hosts) unless you were on the inside of these companies and could read their log reports.

I would honestly take alexa's results with a grain of salt. Some mention toolbars, and one article mentioning this noted "a network of 25000 users", which is a depressingly low population size. Needs metrics sources from places other than Alexa as the data they gather does not hold up to scrutiny.

Alexa uses toolbars to gather view information. Why would clickbots be running alexa toolbars, or any browser plugins for that matter? They're simple scripts that create http(s) requests and toss the response to generate fake web traffic. For this to work at all, they have to be using a chinese botnet, possibly embedded in a very popular browser addon in china, to do all this. This raises the question how they get around the firewall so easily.

One user raised a good point: why the fuck are they doing this in china of all places? India lacks a firewall and is much easier to clickbot in. I heavily suspect Alexa fucked up, or maybe a tonne of chinese started installing some alexa-supported add-on (or an add-on became alexa supported-) boosting the share of people that visit the MSM.

Cookies by themselves do not track you. They must be accompanied by scripts on the websites themselves to track you. There are no such scripts on the MSM. Cookies are just dumb text files containing metadata so they can track users jumping between websites (where every website has the script to log the presence). Its what google uses.

If someone is performing that service, it would make sense that they try to show their work on measurement sites. If it's done manually by people, then their Alexia, GA and ad companies should match up, if it's done by bot, then the sent requests would are mutually exclusive and Alexia can be the outlier as a result, so you could be correct.

They probably also have an algorithm to compare people with the extension installed against estimated internet users per country, so you don't necessarily need to send say 10 million requests to reflect 10 million users, maybe closer to 10,000.
