I unironically enjoyed the gameplay of the Re;Birth games. It's far from the best, but enough to be enjoyable. I wouldn't say I like the game for its gameplay though. Except the controls of RB1 with its horrible deadzones, that was really bad

Yes, the engine supports 360° movement but you can almost only make turns of 45°. This was fixed in RB2 onward.

DS3/4 should are pretty much the best ones.

I'm personally using a PS4 controller with DS4Windows to emulate a 360 controller, works both wired and wireless but sometimes bugs out and I'd need to restart my computer for it to find the controller.

Dualshock 4 is the best controller period and works out of the box on PC.

Why is Noire's game so fucking bad? I got hard baited because I saw it was a TRPG (co)developed by Sting and I love Sting games, but this shit is just unreal. Nevermind the abysmal production value, that's just par for the Idea Factory course, I was really expecting more from Sting in terms of gameplay. There's just nothing going on, it's like playing regular neptunia shit except it's 50 times slower. I did beat Rebirth 1 and it was sort of fun in a mindless mashing buttons + completionist autism kind of way, but I really am not having any fun with Noire. Does it get any better later? That's the first game I'm legitimately considering refunding.

Kind of a delusional and desperate post I guess, but fuck, when I saw Sting I really wanted to believe. That and Noire herself is pretty high tier.

What did you find so bad about it?

Though, I'm not the best judge for that since I only played a handful of SRPGs.

So I'm not the only one who thinks that she is a true great leader. Is that from an obscure artbook?

I found the combat to be significantly better than the standard nep games. Of course, nep combat is pretty much as bad as it gets as far as JRPGs go, so that doesn't really put it above any "real" SRPGs.

The story/characters on the other hand seem pretty weak. I haven't finished it yet, only up to chapter 5. Liked Noire as a change from Neptunia until she got handed an idiot ball in this chapter, but the rest of the characters seem pretty generic and even the other CPUs are just sort of "there".

-Maps and AI are shit. No interesting objectives or enemy setups, and getting the few chests isolated in a corner is just needlessly tedious, as you don't have any pressure from anything, the enemies just nicely wait for you to get in their range before they do anything, there's no time limit, no reinforcments, absolutely nothing. You're just wasting you're time going from one part of the map to another with no repercussions to gather the chests. You don't even get any reward or incentive to finish missions faster or by minimizing damage taken or anything.
-Due to the aforementioned shit AI, combat is always "bait one enemy by sitting at his max range then gang him up". They do nothing by themselves, and even if you "aggro" one of them their buddies just don't give a shit and they'll wait for you to come to them to act. That is reallty mindboggling coming from Sting. How can you do this sort of shit after making Yggdra Union is beyond me.
-No interesting options. A simple weapon triangle would've been the bare minimum instead of "normal attack, weak skill, strong skill" where you only have to watch for your SP gauge. It really feels like I'm playing a regular RPG, with all the slowness and shortcomings of a TRPG and none of the benefits. The Lily system is pretty bad because it's strictly better to use a unit to attack rather than making it stand besides someone else so that you get a 5SP reduction, UNLESS you want to get lily points or whatever, which would have been an interesting balance to play around if there wasn't unlimited grinding available. Though I suppose this system gets a bit better once you get skills with more range.
Thhese are the things on top of my head I'm most bothered about and I'm hoping to be better as the game goes on, but I'm at the 2 hour limit for refunds (hence my post here). I might just refund it and pirate it instead or some shit.

Though I do get what some of you guys were complaining about regarding the self-insert bullshit, it felt really out of place compared to the yuri heaven that was Rebirth 1.

Sorry, your wrong about that.

Special attacks do FAR more damage than skills or regular attacks and cost LP (the in combat gauge) to use. They also have better range and AOE in most cases. Standing beside characters not only generates LP to fuel those specials, but it also reduces the cost by a lot more than just 5 points. The default cost for a special is 100LP, it goes down to 25LP when surrounded on all 4 sides. Using that special also generates more LP than it costs in that case.

Also the system increases damage significantly for every adjacent character. That 4-link special skill will do at least double, if not triple the damage of what the character could do solo.

My strategy is generally to buff up, form up, and then drop 1-hit AoE kill specials on as many enemies as possible. The buffs generate the LP that my specials and HDD consume. Noire is especially useful in this regard since her HDD gives her a second action per round, so if she is "center" she gets to use 2 specials instead of with all of the above bonuses.

I will definitely agree on your points there.
The maps only got interesting near the end, where you had to place boxes upon boxes while being rained on by enemies, the AI is undoubtedly simplistic, only some missions have time limits and no real rewards for finishing quickly.

There's so much potential in a Nep SRPG but it seems it's really not there, I'm hoping they give it the MegaTag treatment, where the first game is really bad, the second game is passable.

In fact, I would argue the Lily system is bad because it's too powerful.

Many SRPGs will give you flanking or assist bonuses. The lily system gives you damage bonus, cost reduction, and resource generation, in addition to sub-leveling. The rewards VASTLY outweigh the drawbacks (slower positioning, AoE vulnerability) and generally reduce the amount of strategic thinking involved.

That's how I got to finish majority of the game. Stacked all the Neps together, spammed abilities to get 30 LP, HDD Noire, spam more abilities to 100LP, Infinite Slash everything down

This format is strange, and I'm still not sure if I like it or not. On one hand it's nice, but on the other visualization kind of goes against the point of an audio CD.
But of course, I should start to learn Japanese if I want to being out the maximum from these.

I haven't gotten very far yet, but I like the characters, the dialogues (as they're voiced, not the neptarded text); also the characters during the VN segments are really pretty, I might be mistaken but I'm under the impression they somehow got better animation from the previous games. On that note, Histoire is cuter than ever in this game, did they also make her smaller or something?

Combat is a little tedious indeed, especially going after some remote chests, but I'm hoping this will get easier later with more characters and skills.

Overall, with the change of format, gameplay, and artstyle, HDNoire at least feels somewhat fresh, if nothing else.

Other than that, it's a Noire fanservice game, I wanted Noire and I got Noire, all to myself. It's a crime that so many of the sim part dialogues are unvoiced, however.

You can't pin it on IF or Compile Heart, every issue with the game is because of Sting because they did virtually everything except the artwork like said. They even handled the writing, which shows because they don't know how to do something in the series' tone or what the goddess' personalities are like (or how to handle a self-insert in the franchise). It's the most disliked Nep game for a reason.

The AI is so hilariously bad. I couldn't believe it when I played. Lily System is too GOOD not too bad, it's ludicrously busted and makes the game a breeze due to the amount of damage you can get off. And yeah, it's as barebones as it gets for an SRPG. The very faint remnant of it being a Sting game at all are the map gimmicks and that's it, and even those are annoying. People are fairly certain no one making the game cared beyond a paycheck which is why it ended up so bad.

I'm still wondering why they let Sting handle the writing of all things. Didn't IF/Compa handle the writing for the other spinoffs?
