Yeah, the first Blade Runner's best quality was its aesthetic. It looked just like one of those comics in Métal Hurlant. It was a ruminating visual meditation that has never been seen before or since. The Syd Mead futurism was absolutely gorgeous.

It wasn't a big blockbuster film in any regard except its budget which is why it flopped so hard. With the new one being almost three hours long that was pretty much a guaranteed flop.

The david vs walter fight leading into the escape sequence when the main character is hanging off the transport from a tow line is the only good part of the entire film.
It felt more like "Jason X" with a higher budget and Jason swapped out for xenomorphs to me. The characters all behave so absurdly fucking stupidly that it shatters any suspension of disbelief and comes across as Scott parodying slasher films.

In the first movie the aesthetic is mainly used to sell the idea of a really dark and edgy future that has run completely out of control. You still get this in 2049, but instead of pure night time shots, you also get a lot of grey, snowy scenes and some other color variance. Lots of detail was put into the sets and props to look worn.

A lot of scenes don't even have music. I honestly didn't realize how good the soundtrack was until I went home and downloaded it. It's not amazing, but it works perfectly. The first track that plays when the movie starts does a really good job for setting the tone and sounds really fucking nice on my NASTY ASS CANS.
