Thief Gold and Thief 2

I just played these through for the first time, back to back. I am absolutely amazed by how good they are. Never felt like playing them before since the stealth genre doesn't appeal to me too much but my god, what an awesome experience.

It saddens me that games like this will just not be made any more outside of some indie developer since they would be considered way too complicated and difficult for the mass market.

The levels are huge and intricate. They are loaded with small details that really add to the immersion. I played on the hardest difficulty which, I was pleased to see, adds loads of objectives rather than just scaling damage etc. Garrett is a wise-cracking sneaky motherfucker and an awesome PC. Taffer is a fucking awesome word.

What are your favourite levels from 1 or 2? Favourite items and weapons? Is it ok to savescum (I tried not to but it's tough when you can get fucked up so quickly).

Rope arrows are fucking god tier.

Just finished Thief Gold, and it was really great.
I HATE dealing with the undead and monsters, but I really loved levels like Down in the Bonehoard, Lost City, and Haunted Cathedral. Shows how much effort can make even things you dislike bearable. I thought the last levels being a reskin of previous ones (you don't want to go through the same shit when you are near the end) was kind of anticlimactic, and while Into the Maw of Chaos did really have that final level feel to it, it didn't quite felt like a stealth level, but more like an action-adventure platformer level. Just started Thief 2, and I love the focus on just stealing shit in the City more than focus on magic shit, but I won't deny that the undead levels themselves are pretty good. Also finished Framed by mantling on top of the telescope on the balcony on the second floor, then mantling on the rooftops of the station while I just walk my way outta there bypassing fucking everything. Unfortunately I had to walk back to the western exit gate on top of the fences because that's where the game recognizes the player as having exited the level.

I just try to assign myself an amount of limited quicksaves per level like in Hitman, although it's tough doing so since every level can vary in size and like you said, it's easy to fuck up around every corner, unlike Hitman.

I loved Little Big World, too bad most of the loot there is just more arrows instead of some valuables.

No replies to this thread for hours? For shame, Holla Forums. Rather shitposting than discussing vidya.

Man, I never beat Thief 2, but I've started it so many times. The latest one being last week or so. I guess I've not given up on this attempt yet, though I've only played through the first three levels again. I think I'll play on the easiest setting to get through the levels quickly until I get to ones I've not played before.

I also tried playing The Dark Mod (a spiritual sequel made with the Doom 3 engine. A free standalone game despite the name) but it has some problems. The main one being saves getting corrupted. Also the guards seem to be telepathic as they can see behind them if you're fully lit up. Still, it makes pretty good use of the engine and lighting.

The one where you're supposed to steal that sword in Thief 1 was really good. For Thief 2, probably the warehouse level.

Is Dishonored a good spiritual successor to Thief? Was thinking about giving it a pirate

Any place where I can get classic Thief?

I remember there was a neat trilogy pack on TheIsoZone, but it's not on there anymore.

After you play the games 100 times they feel so much smaller. Imagine the size of the levels they could make nowadays, it won't happen though.

Life of The Party is my favorite level. It's huge.

I tried to play Thief 3, but it was disappointing. I mean, there are two games with huge level, with no loadings. So you go to Thief 3 and there is the city with a fucking load of loadings. They have to put loadings even in a fucking mansion. The game isn't bad, it's just don't live to the expectation.

No. Not even close.

Everyone says it's watered down thief, it's not. It plays more like extremely watered down deus ex with OP abilities and just generally worse all around.

I tried playing it without using the OP abilities, but it was pretty awful and I ended up giving up 3-4 missions in.

Naw you are way too overpowered because they followed the modern design philosophy that "the player should be able to do anything!" So it doesn't matter if you fuck up the stealth, you can just murder everyone no problem.

NO. It is to Thief what Bioshock was to System Shock.

...

No, but it's a fun combat game if you start it on max difficulty.

I would have said it's more like what Dead Space was to System Shock

I'm one of the apparently rare people that really enjoyed Dishonored. But then, I didn't go in expecting it to be like Thief.

Recently reinstalled and I've been playing through the FM's on the charts that are regularly posted here. I've probably played some of them before but I won't know until I get to them.

Thoughts so far:
Fun little romp, the level design favors the visual over the gameplay, fairly short, loved that you ended the mission by throwing the damsel on your bed.

Loved the first level, fantastic town gameplay, well designed with a couple of good but not overly complex puzzles, visually well done. The second level was meh at first, good to be in a new environment but I was playing on expert and had knocked everyone on the map out and still couldn't quite reach the loot goal, LOTS of running back and forth. Dropped.

Loved this one, great level design, an actual plot, changing gameplay. Also the creator was later hired by Arkane to work on DMoMM. Unfortunately we now come to:

Hated it. It's dropped for now, I may attempt it again in the future but I'm in no mood right now. Badly designed puzzles/frobbables, unclear objectives. Felt like it increased the scope from Cistern in exchange for a large decrease in the quality of design.

Hated it. I got the joke but it just wasn't fun to play at all.

Loved the first mission except for some stupid shit with the front door. Dropped on the second because it turned into a generic mansion crawl.

It's a shame there was never a part 2 for this, at least I can't find one. Loved it. Loved the visual design, loved the gameplay flow, loved the enemy placement, loved the objectives and loved the tool usage. My only real criticism is there was very little verticality, something I've general come to expect from thief levels.

This one isn't on the charts which I'm certain are out of date, but was very popular on the codex and ttlg. The first mission in Chalice is an incredible map which makes great use of NewDark's LOD support, the gameplay flow throughout the mission is fantastic with lots of missable nooks, crannies and apartments to keep you looking up and down. The latter quarter of the mission in a sewer I just rushed though because fuck sewers who thinks they're ever acceptable. The second mission is astonishingly beautiful but plays like complete trash.

Cragscleft from 1, escaping with basso on your back and the relief felt when you see the sky is a great feeling. Life of the Party for 2, it blew my mind when I first played it and it just kept going.

It's not terrible, as mentioned above they did have a popular Thief FM creator on the time, at that point they may have had two in fact. It's main problems are the console enforced loading screens, which aren't nearly as bad as thief 3, and that you are basically a superpowered god. It's best played challenging yourself to ghost through. It's worth getting on sale if it's under £10.

Sneaky anons post in all spoilers

Is there something like this for the Doom 3 mod?

I can't single out which levels I love the most because there were so many awesome levels. At first I didn't like the more action-adventurey spooky levels but I got hooked on them eventually.

I frown upon savescumming. A good technique is to only allow yourself 3 saves per level, keeps the tension high while not making the game impossible.

I'm only half-way through Thief 2 so I should probably get back onto that.

Down in the Bonehoard is the best anything. I will say that a consistent problem was that every level with a zombie had about twice as many as was really needed.

Alright, thanks for the responses. l'll just shelve pirating it for now, then.

I'd highly recommend pirating it.

no you don't shill

...

That FM is legitimately a better horror game than anything the AA/AAA studios have put out in the last decade.

...

For theif 1; Constantine's mansion, mages tower, and the haunted cathedral. like Constantine and the mages tower for the big, varying environments. I liked the haunted cathedral for it's atmosphere and tension, with all the undead lurking about.

For theif 2; I liked Blood Trail, escape, framed, life of the party and soul forged. All of them besides framed had huge environments with plenty to explore. The last level was tense because there was not enough ammo to take out all the machines. Framed was a nice challenge, that forced me to ghost rather then knock everyone out.

I always save scum, as I tend to be a perfectionist and try to master, dealing with the AI/

It always is funny how older games can be vastly more complex and detailed compared to newer games nowadays. For all the advances in technology, we tend to regress instead of growing.

I loved the undead and monster levels, They were a different type of challenge that added variety.

Gog and Steam have the games along with GamersGate.

It was the xbox's fault and the engine they modified, didn't work well with consols.

I once had a zombie walk up right behind me while I was in the shadows and kill me in a quick combo. Made me jump, as I didn't realize it was behind me, instead of being in front of me.

relic is okay, but I once again, I found it turns into a pixel hunt near the end.

Assassins is the exact moment in Thief Gold you realize the game has the potential to be better stealth than anything recently released.
I just find it a shame you have to get through Thief's Guild to get to it.

Trail of blood 2: It is amazing hhow creative and fantastical it is. Feels like it belongs in the main game.

The rocksburg series I though was okay, but it felt like a pixel hunt to find what is needed to progress.

Bad depts is a huge map with plenty to explore. It's easy to get lost and confused as to what you need to do.

The 7th crystal is a nice level,, but it can easily beocme a pixel hunt with a few of the objectives.

The seven sisters is tough to complete the bonus objective, but it isn't necessary. I got stuck on the second day.

Rowena's curse is a nice map. Not as easy to get stuck compared to the seven sisters. Force you to backtrak in order to solve puzzels and unlock new areas.

I would also recommend Swamped. It's an amazing level that feels large then what it is due to the fog. It's quiet tense too as you can't see enemies far away and there are tree monsters, hidden about.

Being Thief 1 and 2 are also great levels. There are no pixel hunts and it's hard to get stuck. As long as you explore, you can beat the maps. Being Thief 2 has a side quest system the lengthen's the level

Bathory campaign is about Bathory, the woman who inspired Dracula, was framed and super natural elements were involved. It has a great story with 7 missions to beat.

The theives guild takes place after. It is a hit or miss level that I liked.

Unpopular opinion: I like Thief 3 more than Thief 1. And I played Thief 1 first. I just find it too annoying with all those non-human enemies and stupid undead. Thief 3 has amazing atmosphere and that one level that has to be mentioned every time Thief 3 is brought up.

Thief 2 is still the best one though. My favourite levels were Life of the Party and Framed.

Thief2x was also pretty cool.

Yea, I don't know why it isn't mentioned in horror threads more.

It is fucking spooky.

Why does everyone hate the Thieves Guild?

Pretty much everything after The Sword is much much worse (minus the level you impersonate a hammerite)

It's the layout and the cramped quarters

Just the layout of it all.

two somewhat interesting mansions connected by long-ass boring sewers

It's a fucking console game from a Frankenstein's monster wearing the skin of Looking Glass Studios' last scion.

...

Life of the Party for me, that trek across the rooftops and all the stuff you run into was fucking great. Being forced to find and play all the gramophones before you're allowed to leave the Mechanist tower kinda bothered me, but whatever.
Vine arrows if I'm gonna be a nitpicky fuck, they're only slightly better than rope arrows.
I'll be one of the first to admit I get pretty savescummy at times, especially during ghosting missions.

Hitman 2016 is better than Blood Money

I usually get shat on for this, but I like Thief 2 much better than the first game, mainly for the reason that there's more robberies that feel real and not some kind of fantasy with monsters and shit.

My favorite levels are Life of the Party and the bank level. I also have a soft spot for framing the police mission, it was the first time in a game where I was made to sneak in and not steal, but insert evidence, and it really hit me right.

I haven't played Deadly Shadows.

Really? I always felt there's a pretty even split between people who prefer T1 and people who prefer T2. Everyone that likes the supernatural elements and loves tomb raiding will probably prefer T1, everyone that just want to rob banks 'n shit will probably prefer T2.

The general consensus is that Thief 2 is more of a stealth game than Thief 1 whereas Thief 1 is a much more well rounded "adventure"

I love both, but I feel like undead missions and pagan monster-thing missions usually require more care in their design.

Despite both being stealth games, they are quite different in tone. Thief 1 is more like an adventure with supernatural and more abstract elements. Thief 2 seems more… grounded.

I resumed my playthrough and did the eavesdropping and bank levels. The latter I got through almost perfectly, being spotted only once and that was because Garrett decided to bounce off a corner instead of mantling it. Landed directly in front of an Iron Beast.

Man, these cutscenes. You don't see stuff like this anymore either.

Deus Ex HR 2: Electric Boogaloo

Well, I decided to dedicate my Sunday for Thief Gold. I'll jewgle it but just in case if anyone remembers how to get the cutscenes working, or should I just watch them on Youtube between missions?

Oh, no.

Rest in peace, immersive simulation.

Install TFix for Thief Gold and Tafferpatcher for The Metal Age and the cutscenes should work perfectly.

fug

I played for 20 minutes and got caught in a corner by a guard who killed me with one hit, then I remembered I forgot to save my progress. Haha, too used to this autosave checkpoints shit again.

I really have to go back and try these again. Got to a mine or something in Thief 1 and dropped it there. My problem was likely trying to ghost everything and things not going the way I wanted them to.

That's the second mission so you didn't get far.

Yeah, not at all. I'd play it soon but summer makes dark games a bitch.

The first time I played Thief 1 that's about as far as I got, but I stopped for different reasons. I wasn't expecting zombies and I walked past what I thought was just a corpse. It moaned and sprung up as I was right next to it.

That remains to this day possibly the biggest scare I've ever gotten in a game. My hands felt tingly, I got a cold sweat afterwards and it really just spooked the soul right out of me. Several years later I started playing for the second time and finished Thief Gold, and I just loved it.

That happened to me too, could feel my heart jump out of my throat, but I did keep playing.

Another scare is the chasing ghouls in The Eye. When those chains start shackling louder and come closer I'd rather just quit than run and hide.

It's big and you can get lost easily which people tend not to like. Despite that, it isn't as horrible as it sounds.

There are differences between to old dark engine and the new dark engine, assuming
they didn't fix them from last year. In my experience enemies in new dark are more twitchy and have a 180 degree cone of vision.

Just remember you can destroy them with flash bombs when they are on the ground and they won't get up if you slip past them fast enough.

Fucking TECHNOLOGY

...

Bump

I hate playing Thief in the summer
there's too much light shining on my screen to be able to see shit

I should've fucking listened.

The standard understanding is that Thief 2 is a better stealth game while Thief 1 is a better game in general.

One mark of a good game is to be able to predict the future

Has anyone ever even released gameplay of it?

I couldn't do it as I am still a skeleton from being spooked out of my skin.

FenPhoenix if you can deal with the cringeworthy commentary.

VERY RELEVANT

Fucking goldfag. I dare you to play that level in original Thief, motherfucker.

No.

If you want a spiritual successor to Thief, try The Dark Mod. It's free. thedarkmod.com/main/

getting really tired of these pretentious brits making these obvious reviews. why do you guys think nobody else is smart enough to come to the same conclusion when you just say the same shit everyone else says? do you think you are smart? most of the reviews for the game already say exactly what this video already says, how far up your ass do you have to be to think your input is necessary at all

Just finished the second mission of The Seventh Crystal, what the fuck is with this "It's okay if a woman cheats on her husband if she feels like she not been getting enough attention" BS.

If the video makes you that salty just close the tab, nobody's forcing you to watch it but it's in literally every Thief, level design and AAA moaning thread so your gonna have to get over it.

What's the best way of installing and playing custom maps? I'm looking at DarkLoader, GarrettLoader, FM Selector.

I've had a lot to drink, and normally I wouldn't even be asking this. I'm mainly looking to play custom maps for Thief 2, and I've installed Tafferpatcher.

I bet I'll regret posting this when I figure it out a couple of minutes later

I think most people nowadays use DarkLoader due to how easy it is to manage a huge list of FMs, but I personally just use the FM selector that comes bundled with Tafferpatcher (or it might come bundled with TFix for Thief Gold, I dunno). All you do is create an FM folder in the root of your Thief/Thief II install, unzip the archive of the FM you downloaded to it, then tell the FM selector where your FMs are kept and then just select one and press play, that's it.

Are we living in the same universe, user? Am I speaking to someone from the Berenstein universe from beyond the border between the planes here?

Thank you very much, but I already found out how to use DarkLoader, it's very straight forward.

With this I can just use whatever folder I wish and then load the .zip/rar from the program and launch it. Though for some reason it won't detect my Thief Gold install.

Fucking Holla Forums, that ain't the picture I chose.

Plus, it allows you to easily jump between Thief and Thief 2 FMs.
Perhaps you have a portable install of Thief Gold? It probably relies on registry files to detect where it's installed.

No I don't think that is the case, because I used a GoG installer and subsequently it was a fairly straight forward installation. I did Install Tfix and one texture mod (I think?) for Thief Gold, so perhaps it had something to do with it.

It was a long time ago and regardless it ain't that big of a deal, I mostly want Thief 2 maps anyway, otherwise I'd just reinstall Thief Gold.

Get one of these. It blocks out all light, it's pretty fucking ebin for sprig/summer time when sun rises early or lingers on your house.

Nah, TFix shouldn't be an issue. Both of my Thief games are patched and DarkLoader detects them just fine.
Skacky, one of the best FM creators the community has, exclusively creates maps for Thief Gold, so keep that in mind.

Jesus fucking Christ. The 'A Better Tomorrow' had way better atmosphere than I had anticipated. I've only just begun it and during the time I played I partly forgot I was playing a Thief mod.

I give credit to whoever designed this mod/map.

Are you using a texture pack? Everything is supposed to be in black and white, yet those lamps are still colored.

No I just now installed Thief2 GoG + Tafferpatch, and then used the Darkloader for A Better Tomorrow. Nothing else.

It honestly looks good though,

...

You're in for a spooking.

Just finished 7th Crystal; the ending set up a sequel, but I can't seem to find if it was ever made. Anyone know?

Are you going to play the third thief? It's different and objectively much worse than the previous thief games, but it had its moments.

Get into sales user. No, really.

Joking aside though, I think I'm going to explore some fan made content for 1 and 2, since I don't feel like I've experienced as much as I would like to. The games were so well put together.

Are there any fan missions that would be comparable in quality to the originals?

Which game is better between the two: Thief: DS or Thief 4?

Thief: DS

At least it looks, feels, and plays like a thief game.

Thief 4 wasn't even a Thief game, so that isn't much of a contest.

Stephen Russell has just been announced as the voice actor for Corvo in Dishonored 2.

I'm too lazy to archive it but google it if you don't believe me.

Too bad putting Garrett's voice on your character doesn't make it a better Thief game. I'm seriously hoping Arkane can deliver, but I doubt they will.

Jesus, ive had fucking nightmares of that shit

FM selector is good for playing new dark engine maps and multiple maps without having to uninstall and installing a different map. It does have some problems with some older maps. Some of the fm's work better in the old dark engine

Aw man, I thought this would be more than just one mission. Though I should have known considering how the actual game plays.

Was fun anyway. It had some relatively spooky moment but overall I think it was too easy. The AI was far to lenient and had predictable patrol routes.

That's not to say I didn't enjoy it.

What mods do i throw into both Thiefs to make it look better?
Been wanting to replay it full but my senses have been scrubitized, can't see shit

Probably just some HD texture mod you can find on Modb. Alternatively play The Dark Mod.

...

HD mods (including the optional ones included in tafferpatcher) tend to fuck up FM's, like in the second picture of
That candlestick is supposed to be black and white, as is the bookshelf at the back.

I just thought that it was to highlight objects you could interact with. Loaded this with DarkLoader and everything else worked just fine.

Absolutely nothing in A Better Tomorrow is meant to be in color.

It's likely either the optional NTEX texture pack or the optional enhancement pack from the TafferPatcher installer that's fucking it up, hence why I always untick them.

Oh well, I don't think it diminished the experience one bit, I was totally immersed to the point of forgetting it was a thief mod.

It was really good, but really short. Which is my only gripe with it, I wish it was longer.

Did you play on expert?

what do?

No I didn't, and honestly I didn't expect it to make a difference with the mod.

I wouldn't be surprised if it told me this beforehand and I was too retarded to notice.

You can cycle through the difficulties before it begins and it shows the differences. In this case you have:

If you installed TFix for Gold and Tafferpatcher for The Metal Age properly then the cutscenes should work fine. If for some reason they're still not then check ttlg for the codecs to install them manually.

Well, not to undermine the mod or anything, but this isn't something I'd care about in a horror mod. It just feels superfluous.

Well it was made under time restraints to meet a deadline for a contest (which it won), so you can't really blame it for not having a more inventive way to get the player to explore the whole map.

Fair enough. I vaguely remember reading that it was from a modding contest. As I said it was great regardless.

Imagine if it was made into a series though, I see great potential, like with AoM or Cry of Fear.

Just got to the Assasins level in Gold.

Am I wrong in thinking that T1 seems easier than 2? At least far easier than I remember, this is the first time I've played it on Expert. Or am I just a savescumming heathen and that's why. There's a lot of instadeath drops, especially in Bonegarden.

Thief 2 has more stuff like blackjack limits and far more alarms/security camera's., but I'd say Thief Gold's later levels, especially some of the supernatural hammer/pagan ones are harder than anything in 2.

...

Thief 2 is harder overall, Thief Gold has easier beginning levels, but the later levels are harder than Thief 2.

Well excuse me for having more than one physical drive.
