I found an adaptation of Carmilla made in 1970 - The Vampire Lovers. Checking it out now. Might make some webms.

It is a great film – love the æsthetic of the Hammer films, and Peter Cushing is always great. I only found a low-res (DVD?) rip of the film, though it did claim to be the uncut version.

Thinking about looking into the Hammer Frankenstein, Dracula & Mummy films too now, just finished Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell, starring Peter Cushing & Dave Prowse, which I loved.

The blond chick is almost too cute - not the biggest fan of Jordana[sic] Brewster though.

About 2/3 way through it now. Pleasantly raunchier than I expected. Yes Cushing is so watchable.

Also on an old school horror binge. Never even heard of Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell. Adding to the list.

There's something attractive about Brewster but I also feel like I'm watching a spooky skele.

I recently watched thru all the Universal horror films from the DVD Legacy Collection, and before that I got hooked on Roger Corman’s Poe cycle of films, starring Vincent Price. IMHO these beat modern horror films easily.

Fair warning about ‘Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell’, I have heard it is the least liked of Hammer’s Frankenstein series. I loved it though – the asylum setting, the slow build-up and the characters, sets & costumes all nail the Gothic horror feeling I love. Dave Prowse (who played Darth Vader in the OT) played Frankenstein’s Monster in one of the earlier Hammer films as well, this time the make-up is quite elaborate – I thought it was an interesting, new look for the Monster, reminiscent of the ‘best’ in the Nazisploitation film ‘The Beast in Heat’ aka ‘SS Hell Camp’. The did go a little overboard though, and Prowse was swole as fuck, so the added padding of the Monster suit is unnecessary. He was notorious for being hard to work with – during the shooting of one of their other collaborations, Herzog got Kinski riled up and demanded take after take after take (which Herzog didn’t film) till he got the more subdued performance he wanted, because Kinski had worn himself out shouting and screaming.

Also, he apparently diddled his daughter - so there’s that.

Be sure to see the German language version though – Herzog had to shoot all the dialogue scenes twice, because the English-speaking market didn’t want a subtitled version in the cinema. Still, according to the audio commentary track Adjani & Topor were dubbed in post, because they were French and their German wasn’t the best. A real shame, because the reason Herzog cast Topor to begin with was because of his demented laugh, which he felt was perfect for Renfield.

There's something about film grain that is just so comfy.

Just started it actually – the only torrent I could find of the series had only one seeder, who apparently is stuck in the ’90s with dial up. So I had to admit defeat and go back to downloading the episodes from YT; I am way too paranoid/woke/whatever to let (Google) scripts run in my browser, so I try to avoid YT as much as possible.

Anyways, onto to the show – you are right about the budget increase. They actually got some sets this time around, though I kinda miss the comfy dorm room feel of the first season. Story-wise, I’m not sure what to think yet – hopefully they won’t go all D&D on our arses now that they don’t have the source material to build on. LaFontaine already getting on my nerves, way more so than she/xir(?)/whatever did in the first season, and I’m not that far in yet. Also, I’m not sure what to think of the weird tonal jumps – they go from camp, cheese & humour to full-on darkness and death in the blink of an eye.

All that camp made me think of the Kiwi show ‘The Tribe’ from the late ’90s/early ’00s; in the last season, I think, one of the characters, May, confessed her feelings to a chick only to be turned down. That was one of the first shows I can remember alluding to a sapphic relationship – other than Buffy of course. From what I’ve read they even shot a scene with a kiss as well, but it didn’t make it into the episode, because the show creators chickened out, I guess. They have released at least two novels that continue the story of the show, and are considered canon, and in the second book, the two characters eventually hook up.

The whole show is up on YT fro free (and there’s like 52 episodes in each season!), so I might make a WebM of that scene.

They play with Sumerian mythology which I quite liked.

Season 2 I pretty much tuned out whenever Lafontaine or Perry were talking.

Yeah it was jarring. I found my self zoning out when they weren't really discussing the underlying relationship between Carmilla and Laura. And then I would find myself stopping and paying attention when they would have their more intimate one on ones. Season three I felt they moved more in that direction and so it was far more engaging.

Haven't heard of the Tribe. Added to the list of things to check out. Yes TV has come along way in 20+ years hasn't it. I remember a story development on Home & Away (early to mid 90s) where Isla Fisher fell in love with her writer/tutor or something but it was never outright stated and I was too dense to understand they were in a relationship. I could never understand why all the characters were so awkward about it and why she had to leave her boyfriend to travel with this writer kek.

I’ll keep on going thru it – maybe I’ll be able to zone out every time LaF shows up as well, instead of gritting my teeth throughout the scene. I don’t really mind Perry – she was actually decent in the first season.

It’s basically a mix between a soap opera/drama & ‘Mad Max’ for teens, set in a world where all the adults have died from a virus.
By seasons four and five it had some sci-fi elements as well (virtual reality, 3D holograms, sentient AI, etc.). The first few seasons were mostly about the characters figuring out how to survive, how to get food and water, and how to stay safe from all the hostile people running around and creating mayhem. If you can handle all the cheese and bad acting of ‘Carmila’, you should be able to enjoy ‘The Tribe’ too, even without the nostalgia factor. There quite a few qts in the show as well in the later seasons.
They did broadcast it in the US as well, though I’m not sure if they ever broadcast all five seasons.

I block all script by default, and when I allow the most basic scripts to run on YT, I can click on the video window to play the .mp4 file in a new tab. Works like a dream. Hooktube & KeepVid is great for downloading vids.
