The war started and we're in the July of 1915. France and Belgium held up an unexpected resistance with Germany being able to capture only Luxembourg. Italy joined the CP and was later overrun by the Entente. The CP are now defending from the AH border. The Western Front is at a complete stalemate. There is a lot of activity in the Middle East with the Entente taking back the Suez after losing it early on and making several naval landings. Germany is making progress in the Baltic portion of the Eastern Front. The rest of the front(with Austria and Kebab) is static.

In summary: The Western Front is stagnant. The Entente is attempting an attack in the Middle East. Germany is making progress near the Baltic.

So I am playing EU4 as Castile. I have Granada, I even got the Iberian Wedding which puts me in a personal union with Aragon and the Naples. I did some poor choices that set me a little back, but now I have my first national idea. My guess is that if I want to do colonialism I should be getting Exploration Ideas and rushing it as fast as possible? I do have enough ships to go on an exploration, what else should I have ready? By the way, it is my first game.

This really doesn't do the situation justice. Allow me to illustrate the Italian fuckfest from the perspective of France.
Before the war, Italy was an Entente member, not a neutral power with the CP alliance as per normal. Seeing as Italy would be on the Entente side, I moved all my troops from that border to the German border in order to hold off from the Hun horde. When war broke out, those greaseball Italians decided to turn against the Entente and uphold the CP alliance. Within weeks they had stormed into France as far as Lyon in the north and almost Toulouse in the west. The entire southeastern corner of France proper was under Italian occupation, and all of my troops were pinned down holding the German lines.
Before the war started, due to intense spyfucking, my National Unity was a whopping 33%. With the Italian occupation of major cities, I lost around 2 NU per major city, getting as low as 23% NU. I was shitting bricks through my eyes watching helplessly as Italy, fucking ITALY, was ripping me to shreds with an "army" of six men armed with sticks and slings. On top of all this, Germany catapulted from ~70% NU to 100% by way of event at the war start.
The situation looked utterly hopeless until a brave corps of British heroes routed the Italians out of France, pushed down the peninsula and ultimately puppeted the sorry nation. What started as a seemingly lost cause turned into a glimmering hope for Entente victory, or in the very least vastly postponed defeat.

Also worth noting is the daring Mongolian involvement in the war, as evidenced by the border gore in the area.
Savvy French diplomacy recruited the Republic of China to the Entente cause upon war breaking out. The CP countered this bringing Mongolia into their fold. Armed with a single theatre HQ and little, if anything, else the Mongolians were immediately swallowed by Russians who just so happened to be in the area.

Solid events and discounted ideas are pretty significant bonuses, especially having discounted ideas for every other idea group following humanist. The early you get it, the bigger the payoff. All of its ideas are actually geared towards huge multiethnic empires. Less separatism, less national unrest, a 25% religious unity buffer, increased tolerance of heathens and heretics (effectively reducing national unrest of recently conquered heathen/heretic land), lower accepted culture threshold allowing for all the benefits of having everything being your culture without the cost of conversion, and better relations over time making aggressive expansion maluses evaporate much more quickly.
I always used to pick religious but after giving humanist a whirl during a Florence/Italy roleplay session I have to say that it's surprisingly better than you might think.

I've been playing a HOI3 TFH multiplayer game with a friend, unaligned Japan+Natchi against the world.

It's a shame that the AI doesn't deal well with unaligned countries, the game became too easy.

Actually I did in my previous post. EU4. They were getting at 40% liberty desire, but after improving my relationship with them (it was down to 94) the liberty desire went down.

So I decided to redo my Northern campaign. I released Siberia from the Soviet Union before the peace event triggered so I got to keep a ton of Siberian land and formed Mengjiang in former Mongolia. Then I conquered China, though without the event. It was a bit more difficult this time since they had more time to prepare their army but I won handily and annexed them. I probably should have used the event to puppet them so that they didn't lose all their divisions, but it's too late now. Meanwhile, Germany had declared war on the Soviets in 1942. Then the US declared war on Germany on their own. This caused a huge amount of dissent for the US with all of its home provinces at 35% partisan chance. They then joined the allies. I then joined the Axis and launched an invasion of the East Indies, Burma, and Siberia. You can see in the far bottom right corner of my last picture the pocket I formed in Burma through a naval invasion at Calcutta. All the British troops were subsequently wiped out. Now I'm advancing into India proper while crushing the American fleets. You can see all their losses in the last picture. In other news, Barbarossa seems to have stopped for now and the Germans are being pushed back a bit. I just hope that only lasts for the winter and the Germans get back on the offensive. We'll see.

I don't let heathens and heretics stay around. The tolerance acts as an effective buffer for freshly conquered heathen/heretic land from going apeshit while coring then converting.
Plus humanist even has an event that autoconverts provinces occasionally, which is pretty nice.
Besides, any troublesome cultures that might get rowdy during nationalism can always be converted anyway. But it's not any more expensive than if someone chose neither humanist nor religious.

Don't worry. Apparently Germany is so bad that they can't defeat the USSR even with an IC advantage. In the meantime, I've finished off India and now plan to send those forces through Iran and try to help Germany by attacking the USSR through the Caucasus. I've also captured Guam, Wake, Midway, and Johnston. Pearl Harbor is next. After that, Attu Island and then Australia.

I'd recommed CK2, because figuring out the game from a character's viewpoint is propably easiest way to internalize map painting, but I haven't played the game for quite long now because all the updates since Rajas of Shitstreet have rubbed me the wrong way.

EU3 is actually quite simple and you get the satisfaction that you didn't play EU4 first.

Between EU3 and CK2, choose which has a time period more interesting to you.

In EU4 what is the best course of action money wise after forming Spain? I was in a personal union with Aragon and suddenly now I am minus 10 gold every month. There doesn't seem much I can do. I send a Merchan in Geneo but I can collect only up to 4.75 gold because of the 70% non-main trade city penalty.

The Soviets continue to advance mostly unchecked on the German front. Romania switched sides and the US had an abortive invasion of Greece which the Italians still haven't bothered to deal with because they're too busy stuffing spaghetti up their asses. Meanwhile I have annexed both Iran and Iraq. I'm also almost out of oil, so I had to cancel all fleet movements until the oil from Ahvaz and Baku starts flowing. The war continues.

I'm thinking aristocratic should be my second idea group, to further discourage anyone from trying to take my shit. Ottomans tried to take Trebizond with their ally Persia, so I burnt it to the ground. Me, Muscovy, and Ryazan managed to wear them down and I got out with a white peace. Persia was already weak from a previous war with Timurids.

Well this game has gone to complete shit. By the time I had captured Stalingrad Germany was already done for. Shortly afterwards Berlin fell and Hitler killed himself out of shame. Now Herr Goering rules Germany. In the meantime, I caught a huge number of Soviet divisions in a pocket in Turkestan. I still haven't eliminated them, but their doom is forthcoming. Moscow has also fallen, though I'll probably have to capture Leningrad to (maybe) trigger the Bitter peace and save Germany. I'm holding off the British troops in the Middle East with 6 divisions camped out in Iraq. As long as I can destroy any attempts at amphibious invasion from the UK and the US, I'm in good shape. Hopefully I can defeat the USSR and resume planning my invasion of the continental US, seeing as I control Hawaii and the Aleutian Islands, ideal staging grounds for my invasion forces.

Seems like an autonomy bug where some of the old Aragon provinces randomly get their autonomy from 0 to 75. I can go back more than 10 years in the game and it is still happening. Went back to even before forming Spain. Formed it and it happened again.

It was my first game. It took me a hours to get to here and it hurts.

France got it very early in the game. It doesn't seem very useful for other than good look anyway.

In my first game I started at 1444 as the Timurids, I eventually formed the Mughal Empire, I was able to conquer everything between the Levant and modern day Thailand, then I westernized, and so did Thailand, then Thailand allied themselves with Russia, but I decided to try and conquer Thailand anyway because I had a ridiculously huge manpower reserve and military, even though I outnumbered the Russian forces 5 to 1, I still lost every single battle, I ragequit and deleted the savegame.

So after being sad for a while I started a new game. This time I did get Navarra and was likely faster with getting Granada. I started friendly with Portugal again, but they betrayed me in a war France started so in 6 more years I will be able to rape their asses and have no big colonial rivals. Marocco even decided to start a war with them so that will just be extra help, as long as Portugal don't decide to lose before the truce is over.

Has anyone managed to get a GSG working on Wine? I tried EU3 and HoI3 and both would crash on startup.

In-game it probably won't matter much, but it is one thing fucking over your old Christian friends and another freeing provinces from fitly Muslims.

I usually ally with Portugal and then fuck them over shortly before colonization begins. It's a good plan. Now just make sure France stays handicapped because if you let them grow they'l become absolute beasts.

Let morocco win because they're much easier to beat than Portugal and you get less aggressive expansion penalties with other Christians.

Actually they would be very easy to beat right now anyway. Me and France raped them during the first England vs France war. After getting the truce early in the war Portugal was left with no allies and they always had a weaker army anyway. On the other side I don't want to fuck with France. I liked them as an ally last game, though this time they are indeed winning from the start. Last time they actually lost a few provinces, which they of course got back later.

There should definitely be a kill or release all, since I can see that being easy to make, but ransom all might be tricky because you can't make multiple offers to people at once and usually multiple people will have their ransom paid for by one person.

Break your alliance with them, ally Burgundy or some other regional power to put a check on France. Once you've got your rag-tag anti-frog alliance, either declare war directly on France (unless France is allied to some major fuck you power or one of your allies) or a weaker French ally. Force the annulment of any dangerous French alliances, then use remaining warscore to bleed France financially dry and release nations that you can ally and protect.

I had this happen to me as well playing TGC. It seems that there are problems with the events for the Russian Revolution that cause the Soviets to pretty much always lose. It looks the problem I had with Poland happened to you too, where the treaty event occurs normally, but then Poland declares war on the Soviets anyway because of their belligerence. I also had an issue where the event letting me win the Greco-Turkish War as Greece wouldn't fire correctly. I don't there is anyway to really fix it except by messing with the mod somehow, though you should play through it and see what happens.

Shit, there's an event that chooses no major wars until 1933, 36 and 39, but I guess it doesn't affect all countries. I was thinking that an event happens or the game see that this is wrong and fixes it, I'll continue playing, but I hope it fixes itself.

That's what I'm unsure of, the Soviets had no troops when the war ended and they had a high belligerence so Poland DoW on them.

grab all DLCs and add:

MEIOU if you want a more realistic game which, however, also keeps raping you with strong rebels all the time, makes your provinces highly autonomous due to administrative efficiency, and makes you enact the holocaust five times for every religion just to convert a few provinces. (it's pretty good in every other regard and has an awesome map, but they went all out with anti-blobbing measures)

BDSM/Extended vanilla Experience/Beyond the Pale if you want something a lot less drastic, with the old mechanics but slightly better map and/or new events, decisions, cultures, and religions.

Extended Timeline if you want to fuck around in a different timeline than the vanilla one. Keep in mind, however, that playing anywhere near Arabia before Islam appears is pure masochism (mudshits get massive, and I mean MASSIVE morale modifier upon appeaing, which allows them to curbstomp literally anybody in the world). Also, because of the scope, it doesn't really have much more flavour than vanilla, so not that many events and stuff (dunno if it's possible to combine with BDSM or similar)

I'm able to ally austria, but they lost Emperor of the HRE to Burgundy. I have no idea what to do now, commonwealth is allied to sweden making a war with them very difficult.

So you can't make any headway in Europe, and you're surrounded by hostile and mostly non-Christian states as a presumably Christian Georgia. I'm going to tell you what I told the last guy who was left without much to do for slightly different reasons as a big Caucasian state; push for the Orient. Kick the Muslims around and blob like mad as an Orthodox crusader state. Convert everything. Depending on how strong you are, I don't know whether it's better to take the fight to the Mamluks, Persians or Ottomans first, but you should honestly just smash the lot of them as the situation dictates. Then, head along the silk road.

Persia is allied to the ottomans. Mamluks likes me now, but they're of no use to me. Ryazan and Muscovy are my allies, but I'm always at risk of getting invaded. I took the aristocratic idea group, so that chance is very small, but it's still there.

Is Paradox even a company worth giving money to anymore?

So I just started up Darkest Hour and booted up the 1933 scenario. I went to war with China in 1934 and even with the more primitive graphics, I'm finding myself having actual fun, more fun than HoI3 for some reason. Even though combat is more simplistic, it feels more involved simply because it lists the exact amount of horses, tanks and other equipment each side loses, and because there are event chains dedicated towards alternate history - and not to mention the better control over your nation's politics. Generals may also die in battle, something which surprised me greatly.

Fucking Italy is going to ruin my chance at reclaiming Constantinople. Entente is getting fucked on all fronts now.

I want to run a CK2 - EU4 - Vicky 2 game. What nation should I conquer the world throughout the ages with?

Bearing in mind that I'll be whatever empire I set as my primary title at the end of CK2.

Which do you think is better - Darkest Hour or HOI2? Can't decide which to play right now.

Everything, except combat maybe and I'm not too sure about that, feels more fleshed out in Darkest Hour.
HOI3 has a lot of issues with it's mechanic and AI, especially if you don't play historic.

I also spent a good hour dicking around with console commands to fix border gore and to give some of the smaller religions a fighting chance against the Chalcedonian and Sunni behemoths, then I accidentally switched to a priest ending my game.

Darkest Hour is an excellent gem of the HoI series. It's a shame that most people forget about it.

The only thing CK2+ can't fix is performance.

Each empire's government operates under a specific set of ethical principles, and each unit of population in the game has its own set as well. If enough of your people disagree with the government, they'll form an internal faction which tries to get autonomy and maybe eventually independence. So multiple empires of the same species are not only possible but a deterrent against blobbing too hard.

Well it finally happened. Italy fell in August and now in October Germany has fallen. Next in line is Spain who even now are being invaded by the British and the Soviets. To make matters worse, they became the leader of the Axis after Germany was annexed, so now I have to wait for them to be annexed to become the leader. In other news, the Turkestan pocket was closed and those troops have begun to be redirected to the Western Front, where the Soviets are beginning to redirect the troops they had fighting in Germany. I now have 12 divisions of marines ready to invade the West Coast of the US, but without backup from ground troops that are currently occupied in Russia, that will have to wait. I'm also building a nuclear reactor.

Install HPM. A full welfare state tends to kill off most/all revolts aside from jacobin stuff or occasional nationalist stuff, and jacobins can be stopped by going Constitutional Monarchy, or just letting fascists revolt and take over and then running through a bunch of decisions that basically end your militancy and consciousness for the rest of the game.

How the hell did you manage to pull this off? I would have figured that the movement speed reduction from WW1 doctrines would have made it more difficult to pull something like this off

The Russians kept assembling troops in Poland to attack me, they broke through my lines with three quarters of a million men and then I order 500 thousand to attack them while leftover cavalry and infantry surrounded them.
Basically because the combat takes longer due to the doctrines I just surrounded them and then ordered the encircling troops to attack.

My units lost all cohesion marching into Russia though so the rest of the war was a bitch while waiting for the event to fire that ends the war for Russia.

What a difference half a year has made. The Soviet Union is in full retreat. Left without any national provinces, their industry is effectively zero. Now they are in full retreat across Europe, just like Germany before. With the creation of several puppet states over former Soviet territory, my army only grows larger. For some reason Germany loses all its cores on Austria, Bohemia, and Poland. For now those areas will be independent. In place of Herr Goering, who presumably killed himself when Germany was annexed, Herr Himmler has been placed in control of the new Germany. May it last longer than the previous. My troops are now being freed for the inevitable invasion of the US west coast, and I have begun assembling spare divisions in Korea. I expect that invasion to occur sometime in late 1945 or early 1946. After the US, only the UK will remain.

Yes, and was the main reason for invading China. Japan doesn't have a lot of natural resources, they rely on imports and exporting the few resources they have, but because nations were increasing tariffs to protect their own economy, Japan got butt-raped so they decided to gangbang their fellow gooks for more territory and more resources

The mod guts my resource production, and puts a hard -40 modifier on my money generation. It's the most bullshit thing I have ever seen. These horrible modifiers apparently apply to all the nations in the world without consideration for their circumstances during the time. It also removes your ENTIRE FUCKING STOCKPILES of resources so your industry is crippled from the get-go, and you're unable to supply your troops who're suddenly dying the hundreds because of a lack of supply. I've quit the game and I'm still mad that I wasted so many hours to ultimately achieve nothing. My money resource would be in the negatives well into the 1960's and beyond at the rate I was losing it.

I've amassed 60 of my crack divisions in Pearl Harbor and Dutch Harbor, ready for a two pronged assault on the US, the first landing will be made in Anchorage, the second in San Francsisco.

Meanwhile, our troops have already set up a base of operations in San Francisco and pushed outward. And in Africa, the combined forces of Russia, Siberia, France, Italy, and Germany have conquered the northern coast and now push south into the dark continent, eliminating the last of Britain's empire. 1946 will prove to be another fruitful year for the Greater International Co-prosperity Sphere.
