Arena Shooters

since theres been sporadic, on and off talk of arena shooters due to the Doom 4 beta (its shit if you didn't get the memo) and UT4, i'd like to have a thread dedicated to arena shooters.

first of all, how do we get more people playing arena shooters? i started getting more into them recently, mostly due to Xonotic, and most seem to have declining amounts of players and/or small amounts of them. apparently even Quake Live is having a decline in players.

in other news, Warsow still isn't on Steam despite being greenlighted for years and Xonotic's devs are working on a port to the Daemon engine.

heres some free arena shooters:
Xonotic: great arena FPS. almost every weapon has an alt fire, vehicles and/or turrets on some maps, the rocket launcher has manually directed rockets by holding down mouse1, lots of modes, high configurability, XonStat for player statistics, mutators like the grappling hook and the jetpack, mods, etc. its loads of fun. its a fork of the original Nexuiz and its successor essentially. xonotic.org/
Warsow: cel shaded arena FPS thats similiar to Quake 3's CPMA, has a context sensitive key, when its pressed you will either dash forward, dash up a flight of stairs, walljump, etc. also has a mode inspired by Counter Strike called bomb warsow.gg/
OpenArena: its Quake 3 with assets replaced so it could can be given away for free legally. openarena.ws
nQuake: easy to use Quake/Quakeworld, comes with shareware/free assets and uses the ezquake engine. can replace them with the Quake assets if you want. nquake.com/
Marathon series: the original Marathon games, Marathon Infinity is probably the way to go for online/LAN games. alephone.lhowon.org/
Freedoom: IWAD replacements for Doom.wad and Doom2.wad, use with a Doom engine that you can get for free. some mods are fully compatible like Brutal Doom, others may look funny, mostly because they won't have the original monsters. freedoom.github.io/
Red Eclipse: the devs call it an arena shooter, does have sort of "modern" game design that not everyone would like. has stuff like parkour, impulse boosts, dashing, weapons with alt fire, etc it has in-game map editing too. redeclipse.net/
AssaultCube: old FPS, runs on toasters and crappy internet assault.cubers.net/
Unreal Tournament 4: not a lot of people playing yet, and its in pre-alpha or something. i can't help but get a bad feeling about a game when Tencent is involved.

guess the thread is as dead as the community, makes sense

nobody wants to talk about arena shooters? not even a shitpost?

anyway, heres some details about the Daemon engine: wiki.unvanquished.net/index.php?title=Engine

lots of nice graphical effects, a switch to C++11, some nice AI features, some nice features like in-game IRC.

Xonotic is pretty good. I like how there are so many different ways to move around. Bunnyhopping, lazer jumping, grapplehook and vehicles. I've tried introducing it to some friends but they never seem interested.
Red Eclipse used to allow players to shoot themselves with the shotgun to jump. They've removed that, which is kind of unfortunate. It's a nice game but the movement is weird, and I find tracking enemies much harder due to how they move.

I actually talked with one of the devs about this.
The project's founder, SoLomonK, a 40-something-year-old French guy, got butthurt over some trolling on IRC. His signatures are on the contract with Valve. Now he's holding the whole project hostage and only bothers to show up once in a blue moon to troll in a private forum thread. The other devs are also know to be huge prima donnas, so it doesn't seem like it's going to get resolved any time soon.

You know something is niche when even Holla Forums doesn't want to shitpost about it.

VERSION 7
pastebin.com/yV2AwaXE

I am shilling this pastebin EVERYWHERE relevant. I fixed a few errors (some of which might save a few hairs on a mapper's skull) and added some more stuff like Quake Injector

Fortress forever is dead?

I was waiting to post until somoene else ruined your lonelyness

The new UT is great. You also missed Reflex and that other one, i think it was strafe?

hadnt heard of xonotic, thought it looked good except for the homing missiles, unless you steer them yourself.

Too hard for most people. Has an extremely long learning curve.

The rockets in Xonotic are manually steered. If you hold down the fire button the rocket moves in the direction you look.

I had a fun idea for an Arena shooter using Blizzards Overwatch as the base. Only character you can play as is Blink (snap? Timeskip? The spandex girl in yellow)

But, the rest of the shooters weapons get placed around the map. Gravity gun, instant travel sniper rifle, ice shooter/flame thrower, all that shit, since there's a variety of actual weapons. Stick ammo limits on stuff since there actually a reload mechanic, change the maps a little to scatter the items around, amd I think you'd have a kind of fun, super fast, colorful shooter.

What do you fagora think?

correction, not strafe, its toxikk

Allow me to shitpost, then.

I used to LAN Q3 quite a bit in various basements. Even poisoned a router at school to get enough privledges to run it, at one point.

Multiplayer shooters are only ever as fun as the people you play them with, though. CS:GO sucks for me compared to CS:S mainly because I find it harder to find good servers with fun people to play with. Screaming children and assblasted tryhards make it hard to get into it.

I miss having friends.

Grab a fork of the id Tech engine and get to work, idea guy.

i forgot to mention, tt1 has been updated. i plan to revise the armor room as it doesn't look cool, or even visually appealing at all, but wanted to push this update out as i fixed several things that have really been bothering the fuck out of me in the pastebin. specifically regarding leaks, as i was completely wrong regarding them and have found out my problem with leaks in the level.

anyways the .map file and .bsp file are included at the end of the pastebin so feel free to root around it

maybe I'll get to those servers if I ever bother

You'd think there'd be a shit ton of arena shooter fans considering how many people shit on Doom for not being one.

wow, thread exploded.

and strafe jumping, crylink blasting, rocket flying, jetpacks, ramp jumping… the list goes on and on.

i agree, Red Eclipse's movement is odd.

he'd rather kill his games chance at success over some stupid trolling than see it finally succeed? thats too bad.

you steer the missiles yourself, they're not homing missiles. see embed related for a pretty skilled player steering his missile around the map.

you mean clone all of Overwatch's weapons and one character on some other engine or try to mod Overwatch? i kind've doubt Blizzard will allow such indepth modding. in any case not too sure what to say about that because i don't play Overwatch.

autohop is in Warsow, Xonotic and Quake Live nowadays, makes things easier. honestly feels natural in Xonotic.

check the "empty" box on the server list to filter out empty servers, also wait a bit for all the servers to appear. dm gets played quite a bit actually, also voting happens to change mode sometimes.

I think it'smore about debasing a beloved franchise and dragging its corpse about in a blatent cash grab that's pissing Holla Forums off more than anything.

If they just called it "Hellniggers" or something it would at least admit it wasn't Doom, and would just be yet another 5/10 online shooter.

UT99 is fun, especially with grapple hooks
there's still people playing it, so that's cool too
I'd love seeing an arena shooter with more maps and a more fleshed out grappling hook mechanic

i really doubt most of the complaints are from actual fans of the series

and i fucked up a teleporter, jesus christ. another thing for next version. definitely need to add more space for the spiral teleporter anyways

Care to record your map in action?

I would post but all the "revival" arena shooters are soulless cashgrabs. I'm having more fun playing doom wads.

if i could ever fucking figure out how to host a server properly i would love to try, but i think that would be best after the next version (a possible final as i am getting pretty satisfied with it).

right now the spiral staircase isn't executed very well at all. you go through the teleporter and you almost immediately hit a wall. i need to fix that especially, not to mention the fact that the actual teleporter target is inside the other side's teleporter so you cant even go through it in this version. but i can definitely record a match or two once i have figured some things out

I tried Xonotic a couple times several years ago but it made my ancient router shit bricks whenever I started the game.

didn't CS get more people like that before CS:GO came around? was never into CS myself anyway.

"revival" as in remakes of old games, or newer arena shooters?
Xonotic is no cashgrab as its always gonna be free, in both meanings of the word. the ones i posted in the OP, except for UT4, aren't cashgrabs either. with UT4 they're trying to grab cash via commercial mods and games made with the UE4 engine.

Xonotic has a grappling hook mutator, its used a lot on instagib servers.

i just realized i could just jump around it

again i want to redo the armor room, and maybe add something to the main atrium as it looks very bare. may also change a health pack to the smaller variant and extend the stairs some more (but that part is really growing on me)

ezquake servers do not have items respawn for some reason until a game is started so nothing ever reappears. i would have used quakespasm if the map wasn't so reliant on teleporters and cycling through them. not final, may even restart with a goal of more verticality (just imagine how cool it would be to have all these fucking rooms on top of one another somehow?) and less teleporters as that is my crutch right now

actually ive already decided i want to remake it. i have been thinking having an elevator in the middle of the main atrium to go up to the lg room and ive always really wanted the armor room to be a basement atrium. maybe redesign the whole map into a specific shape with some branches a-la dm4, which as you can tell at least from the art design is heavily inspired from as i literally copied everything american did to get an idea of design

yeah

...

Looks great.

Funny, it was the opposite for me.

ill stop spamming after this. ive decided to keep this map this way, of course finishing it but in this basic shape, and maybe make a new map, something actually designed around verticality.

i find myself going back to quake more often than doom myself

Doom may have it's share of mods, but nothing can compare to Quake's movement, which I fucking like, that's the one thing I miss from doom, unless you play with

is there any mods or cool maps to get for Quake?

i hope so, ive literally spent over 200 hours on this map because i am just that fucking slow and indecisive. thank you

i have not yet explored enough great fan addons to have an opinion but i would definitely say yes. i recommend you check out the map packs here;
quaddicted.com/reviews/
-click the user subcategory to show you the most popular. this is what i will be doing soon. arcane dimensions is apparently already the most popular mapset, when the fuck was that released a couple months ago? looks great regardless

Dude the map looks more official and polished than even the orignal ones. Phenomenal job!

wait until it is finished before showering me in praise user, you will be BLOWN AWAY. i am learning new tricks every single DAY MY BOYO

Also how do i make lan games in quake? i use quakespasm as my sourceport for quake

I don't know myself but if you ever figure it out please post here with instructions and I will add it in the pasta. I don't have any experience with LAN.

I would imagine though it should be as easy as; connecting computers to the network, figuring out what local IP the server is (the ip the router gave your computer specifically, can read this on windows with cmd with "ip config" or on linux with "ip addr"), start a game, and then just have everyone connect to the local IP of that one computer. I don't even think you would need to forward the ports for LAN

Remember though, Quakespasm is netquake protocol. To my knowledge, it is not compatible with different software like EZQuake as it uses the quakeworld protocol. ProQuake is also a good multiplayer client for netquake specifically

$CURRENT_YEAR

To get the players arena games would need to do the following

1. only allow matchmaking. Can't have people playing with just anyone they like now can we?
2. horrible matchmaking. Goes without saying.
3. Servers hosted by a chinese conglomerate
4. Some kind of level system, stats, unlocks that kind of thing.
5. hats and keys to things that unlock hats
6. Regular updates that don't do anything but are huge
7. Paid shills (youtube peoples)
And so forth.

sudo pacman -S linux-users
error:target not found: linux-users

heres a instagib + hook screenshot, probably the fastest and craziest kind of instagib i have ever played.

pls no
i think we can have at least some growth in the amount of players without having to resort to ruining the games

from what i hear GNU/Linux users make up a good portion of the arena shooter populace

where's this game in 3d?

cmon son
openlierox.net/

Make a good modern complete arena shooter. Arena shooters died because they stopped innovating.

but Liero is super-clunky and doesn't allow mouse aim

It hurts still. Gameplay was fucking awesome, too bad everything else was shit.

it was a joke. besides, in the post he said i implied he ran windows, i even mentioned a linux solution

Just play xonotic, everything else sucks in comparison

D44M isn't even an arena shooter though. In anycase, I'm down for some talk.

I don't enjoy Xonotic, it feels like a confused mess that wants to be both Quake 3 and UT.

Does anyone know any great maps or mods for UT or Quake 3 or Half-Life or whatever? I keep a flashdrive with games and what not in case of LAN party and I'm always looking to keep a ton of shit on there.
I've already got The Specialists, the Strangelove mod for UT, CS 1.6, etc.

And somewhat on-topic Game/File-Front is going down at the end of the month.

its nothing like liero, youve not even giving it a chance.

come on anons, the daily Overwatch shilling thread has more posts than us

heres some Warsow, apparently the japs like it

i know
was just mentioning it

Quake 1 has a grappling hook
Xonotic does too
some of the UT games have them

yeah but people were comparing it to arena shooters, since they're faster.

well everybody has their own preferences

i know some free stand alone games that run on Quake 3 derived engines, not all of them are arena shooters

Reaction Quake 3, Action Quake inspired game that runs on ioquake 3 rq3.com/
Smokin Guns, ioquake 3 game thats set in the wild west smokin-guns.org/
Unvanquished, an aliens vs humans FPS/RTS. its the successor to Tremulous, still in alpha unvanquished.net/

I'll bump occassionally with some webms

I was at the store earlier and some dude was digging my UT shirt.

...

...

UT 4 is dead isn't it now that the devs are working on a shitty MOBA.

...

user, the devs left to make another game. Who else will develop it if not the devs?

One of the thing I dislike about Arena shooters is how easy it is to get one kill then spawn kill the other player 5 times. I just find it dumb. Before anyone says i'm shit, I am. It simply is not fun to get spawn killed repeatedly. Weapons should be better balanced overall (by not having weapon tiers).

You need to git gud at map control, no player regardless of how good he is can control all of the map at once, use this fact at your advantage.

Xonotic has much better graphics than I thought any FOSS could ever have, Lots of respect for its contributors.

You do understand the concept of a big studio having multiple development teams working on multiple projects at the same time, right?

Thanks for the tip.

reflex bretty fun

Oh hey, I was in that clusterfuck. The game has gotten better since the last time I played over a year ago. It runs really smoothly now. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a newer arena shooter, especially since the devs let you download the cracked version to try it out.

i play xonotic casually, whats reflex all about?

This market is dead. Games are either a quake copy, a ut copy or some bullshit that makes no sense like doom. And honestly I don't get why arena shooters are so hyped now.

Quake Live stops being free and everybody loses their minds while nobody played it when it was free. UT is basically dead since ages, other games like cs which are equally old survived better.

I think this is a genre that people love, to love without actually loving it. Probably because all the other games suck and they want to return to a good time. A good time they didn't experience back then…

looks like another CPMA clone, unlike Warsow its not free.

those games basically defined the genre, its hard to make a good game without some of their gameplay mechanics at least.

wasn't it the most popular arena shooter when it was free?

CS had new versions of more or less same game on a newer engine. UT changed each time there was a sequel, i guess people don't like change.

Romero just announced his new game. You guys think it will be arena?

pretty sure devs are just creatively bankrupt. Even shitty korean pay2win shooters are more mechanically interesting than most >arena shooter for a new age

you forgot about the new unreal tournament. despite the alpha state, the game is completely playable as far as i've seen if you don't mind maps with unfinished textures. it's fun

Holla Forums is slow, buddy. don't expect instant replies.

People really liked the first and the second, people just really hated the third since it was slow as fuck and looked like ass

quakefags are the meleefags of the PC

CPMA with a fresh coat of paint, built on a proprietary, Windows-only, engine. Devs had to push microtransactions early because they're out of cash and everybody who wanted to buy it had already done so.

Ask a nigger for a gentle prostate massage, smashfag.

stay mad you bunnydashing mexican

Take your bullshit lingo elsewhere. This is an arena shooter thread, not another safe space for the cancerous Undertalefags of the fighting game community who never shut up about their Nintendo party game.

you both only ever complain when things arent the exact same thing as youve been playing for the last decade+

So, Flak Monkey or Shock Whore?

It will be a massive failure.

Guaranteed.

flak munky fuh dayz fam

OP you forgot about Sauerbraten, which imo is the most fun game for instagib.

Someone knows what's up

...

I fucking hate people who keep using the fucking Shock Combo. I don't know why, but it incredibly triggers me when people would just rather rely on the massive blast radius on the thing to kill me behind cover, rather than just predicting my positions by firing projectiles.

So, uh, out of the dead communities; which is the least dead?

At higher level plays, that tends to be what it's used for. Shock combo around EVERY corner.

If you're not good enough for MP yet play with bots. UT99 and Q3 has them and they're rather smart.

radical

Quake Live, I believe.

...

lmao

Quake live used to be alive and strong, but then Bethesda raped it

So Xonotic?

i would be surprised if the game came out at all

thanks for shitposting

oops
yeah i remember instagib being fun on there, pretty cool maps too. in game map editing as well as online cooperative map editing is neat, wish other games had that. heres some sauerbraten frag movie

Doom has a bunch of players on Zandronum. among the free ones AssaultCube and Cube 2 Sauerbraten have a good amount of players usually. OpenArena usually has more public players than Xonotic. Xonotic has a decent amount of players but some of them play private matches set up via IRC, so not all of them are in the public servers. some people seem to still play Quake 1.

I don't know. I used to play Quake Live, then I moved out of my parents home. I left my PC there for my lil bro and took his shity old laptop. For some reason QL didn't work, so I had to entertain myself with something different (i've played single player FPS games and mods) and about half a year ago i decided to try Quake Live. To my surprice it wasn't freeware anymore, it's now on steam for 10$.. well whatevz, i can't spend 10$, but the reviews were almost all bad and I don't blame them. They fucked up horribly.

i meant that i can. I didn't.

I've played Open Arena for a bit, but the framerate is awful on my laptop (with integraded GPU) :(

Haha oh wow that's actually sort of heart breaking.

You know what they did ? besides the changes to the gameplay itself they totally deleted the web based system QL used to have. So people lost their accounts and with it their stats, friends, clans etc.

It almost feels like they want to get rid of the old fanbase and invite new players, so people forget what games really used to be. Same with DOOM, why is it not DOOM4 ? because people would see the previous games ? Maybe it's because whoever would say "i love doom4" would get a list of arguments why it's shit, but now you don't even know if someone is talking about the new or old doom

conspiracy ? i think so

Ask my crystal ball anything.

heres a screenie from one of Sauerbraten's potato singleplayer levels

AssaultCube works on toasters usually. Doom would probably work, depending on the engine you use. Sauerbraten might work if you turn everything down. maybe nQuake?

quake 1 and doom works fine. thats what i was playing for the whole year. also blood, duke nukem 3d, shadow warrior, serious sam (i'm half way through my first playthrough on serious)

Speaking of Sauerbraten, one of the main devs has forked the game/engine for his own project called Tesseract.

tesseract.gg/

He upgraded the lighting system and simplified the gameplay, and it's pretty dead, duh

also I mainly play Quake Live but as people said, since fucking Valve made it a paid game it's pretty dead.

Valve ?

btw. Not arena shooter, but did you see the trailer for SW2 ? The very first thing that you all propably gonna notice is how much faster it is than nuDOOM

Yeah, from what I understood/remember, id Software basically handed the game over to Valve to maintain because running the servers was costing them too much. Valve being the greedy jews that they are left running stat and dedicated game servers up to the community, so now there are barely any servers and no web portal. And once a jew smells shekels.. they started charging for a free fucking game. All they did was pointless Steam integration (Workshop, Achievements, Friends, Cloud and Trading Cards and VAC).

it wasn't free to begin with. You had to pay into their subscription service, otherwise you couldn't even play the standard duel maps or certain gamemodes

(checked)
eh, technically it was free originally because they wanted to fund the whole game through in-game advertising, but that didn't work out well so you did indeed have the subscription model, but the game was fine without the subscription imo. I didn't feel like I missed out on much except hosting private matches and map-voting, but it was alright for a free game.

It's still doing way better than all the other games in the genre combined.

It looks like the blue (in the second chart) line is QL (going up and down between ~1k and ~300)

then the green line in the second chart must be Reflex, hovering around only ~0 to ~100?

Sucks that the genre is so dead, it doesn't deserve to be so..

You don't.

Like fighting games, unless you make it explicitly for casuals with a REALLY REALLY FUCKING LOW skill ceiling, the skill difference will drive people away. Competitive PvP will always have "That one faggot."

"That one faggot" will probably carry his team, and given random variables, he'll likely be against you, unless surprise - YOU are that faggot, and ruining the game for others.

The "git gud" mentality is fantastic, but you'll just piss off newbies / newcomers. You won't drive people into your game that way. Not everyone has the autism/competitive drive to keep throwing themselves into the grinder when loss is highly likely.

Shit like this is why I fucking avoid Counter-Strike to no fucking end. Be the last man standing? Can't win, and then I get banned from servers for being bad. Fuck off. Multiplayer gaming is a fucking mistake.

Quake Live had a good match making I think. You had a level that grew with each play if you won etc. While I was always playing FPS games I wasn't playing Quake3 Arena online before Quake Live (I didn't had internet till 2008-09) so i started as a newbie and played with noobs, but few matches later i started getting much better players.

So, thoughts on UT4?

a wiseguy, eh?

Sauerbraten and AssaultCube are fairly easy to get into. Xonotic is harder but i think the movement is pretty easy.

sounds like a shit community. honestly the last time i encountered a community with that sort of attitude was back when DOTA was on Warcraft 3. they had a general "fuck all new players" attitude that no other aeon of strife clone's players had. good thing i never really cared about aeon of strife clones. there were custom maps that were a lot more deserving of being turned into stand alone games than DOTA of all things.

this is usually what matchmaking systems, statistics and/or pickup channels on IRC are supposed to solve. there is also always the modes without teams.

The genre is dead and has been dead for a long time, quake live was dope but then they went from FREE TO PLAY IN ANY BROWSER to lock it behind a paywall connected to steam. I'd rather just play Q3A at that point.

The only people playing arena shooters today are those who played them back in the day, a dying breed. Teenagers today aren't going to find random frag videos and try to get gud, they're going to go look for porn of league of legends, jerk off then go be mean to their friends because they're slightly more shitty at the game even though they're all bad at the game. Doesn't help the genre is pretty much dead, most of the games you mentioned been around for a long time and always had small player base. Fuck Warsow is still one of the more beautiful games I've played but has 9 players on it. No newb is going to DL it without encouragement from friends, who are all probably playing MOBAs or whatever FOTM shit people play.

UT4 is a neat game I play time to time but Tencent pretty much killed all hype. But to be fair UT3 killed the franchise and no phoenix can rise from those ashes. Reflex while a great passion project won't survive its development cycle and it'll be really hard to get people into the game without some kind of painkiller est tournament where millions are on the line.

You can't get casuals in the games, you can't get esports anymore due to no spectator value which means no money. Genres dead outside your "Remember the old times" lans I'm sure many groups are already having

From what I played, pretty fun, especially instagib. The sliding mechanic works surprisingly well. Personally I prefer faster gameplay (quake, sauerbraten, warsaw).

My laptop a shit so I didn't keep playing because with all graphics on low(est) the game looked like prolapsed anus.

agreed

Fuck Counter-Strike, seriously. I don't get why it's so popular, must be herd-mentality.
The whole gun-pattern aiming is awful.

Well even if the genre is dead I think I will still buy doom 4, get the closure I need from those days kinda like with fallout 4; I mean its not fallout game, but its still fun one. these days I think the fact these company even still think of us from the early years of gaming, I it's nice even if it's after thought.

thing is gaming is expensive as hell these days, far more than it used to be, but things will come around, I mean were not all dead yet. and we have been though far worst, so I have hope, and I rather look towards the light rather than the surrounding darkness.

Disgraceful.

...

Honestly the hardest thing about CS is not the pattern aiming, hell bursts are pretty much frowned upon.
If you watch any of the tournaments you'll quickly end up noticing that the game is about map control, teamplay, personal positioning and strategy more so than 360 noscopes.

If I host a dedicated Xonotic server will you guys come play team-based modes with me sometimes

Nah I don't enjoy Xonotic

Now if you host some Strangelove UT, I'd have to check that out

requesting a torrent for UT99
is there any player population in 99 anymore?

wow i'm actually impressed that a post went through but didnt bump my page

I'm real shit but as long as you host on weekends at night I might pop in so I can watch myself get killed over and over again.

Is it that hard to go to a site and type up "Unreal Tournament?" It's not the arc of the covenant, you know.

Requesting a torrent for Half-life: Counter-Strike. I don't want to buy it from steam.

Which arena shooters have the most players? I've been wanting to get back into them for a while now.

You're better off asking which arena shooters have players.

Same here.

The problem is that different skill levels have exponential results between players.

A level4 guy who wrecks others goes up against a level5 who then wrecks him. How to fix that without some artificial handicap to keep it fairly even?

CS originally took off because as a player, you could utilize different tactics, methods to get score–but even that has become too refined. e.g. Early on, servers had like a 12 map rotation and very few clans. 2-3 years later, the same servers would be running DUST2 constantly-ONE FUCKIN MAP WTF

Then there's the pacing issues. Arena is 100% max intensity with no break and there's a very narrow window for that kind of player.

i'd rather lose a bunch of times in a good game then be mediocre/good in a bad game

The reason is because the shock combo is literally the best thing in the game if you're good enough to be consistent with it, flak is just easier to use

Y

Is that even an arena shooter?

It's not arena if you don't all spawn with the same gear and stats

I think we had a good compromise with Tribes Ascend, but it was ruined.
It's not arena, but it was fast.

sure thing, it would be interesting if you did some of the less played modes like nexball, domination and freezetag.

they don't
its a recognized brand name that sells. almost nobody from id's glory days works there anymore either.

but a lot of arena shooters are free

i guess it depends on what you mean by no break. there are a lot of times in basically any arena shooter where the player is not engaged with other players and is just running/jumping around to grab items or looking for their enemy.

thats like a textbook example of why proprietary software/software as a service is bad. the community had zero control over the software and were played like a fiddle, things only got worse for them.

most teenagers don't even know arena shooters exist. i think they could be somewhat appealing since most will run on average computers and some are free, but we're not really even at that point since nobody advertises them. reflex is just trying to appeal to old players, QL has basically no advertisement, most of the free ones don't have the resources to advertise and Epic probably doesn't want to shill UT4 hard yet since its nowhere near done. its dead because potential players hear jack shit about them.

Fuck you, faggot casual. Getting destroyed by a god does not "ruin the game", it provides an opportunity to git gud – I mean really gud, the kind of gud that can beat actual talented players instead of just pub stomping.

You are right about one thing though: we do not need more low-energy niggers like yourself clogging up the community of competitive games.

This guy gets it.

supernerdland.com/m-m-m-monster-kill-the-death-of-the-arena-shooter/

yeah

I would like it if we could get some vehicles in but last time I tried to play with them I found that they had issues with camera angles and controls.

I want UT 2k4 quality vehilces :(((

UT 4 was okay, didn't like the acceleration.

They should kill themselves for even considering implementing the automatic sprinting or any sprinting at all. Stupid idea and it has no place in its genre.

Weapons were poorly balaned but UT has never had good weapon balance. That being said those rockets move too fast and the splash damage is clearly underpowered and the link gun pull was a stupid fucking idea and should be done away with.

I wish they'd use a less realistic art style, but I don't care too much about that since it dosen't affect the gmaeplay.

Overall I don't think there is any reason for me to play it now since at this point all they have is deathmatch and ctf the former I've always preferred to play Quake or other faster more simplistic shooters for and the latter of which I've always hated in UT because of the spammable translocators.

I pretty much only play UT for things like domination, assult, onslaught, bombing run, etc.

The sliding I'm kind of impartial to, it feels clunky to me and doesn't seem to be much of a game changer. I don't think it has a place in an arena shooter and seems more like call of duty or gears of war bullshit to me but maybe that's just me not liking change.

For what they were, the old Halo games had fun vehicles.

Community Holla Forums server when?

Don't forget no source code or SDK release. The large amount of choices for new gamemodes, etc, that either would open up to players would only confuse them, and enabling creativity among our players would take away from the effectiveness of our game's social engineering hook and drain its monetization potential.

Was there ever much of a mapping community for Sauerbraten singleplayer?

i really have no idea, i never looked and i only played Sauerbraten for its instagib from time to time. this is just one of the campaigns that comes with the game.

Xonotic has Domination, Assault, and Onslaught modes. there seems to be zero servers for those modes at the moment though, and i have no clue how close they are to UT's modes.

for which game?

Nah, not much. You might find some on quadropolis.us/, but probably not a lot, because the SP mechanics were super basic, most people didn't bother much with it.

(checked)
agreed, I liked those gamemodes the most too. For normal arena modes Quake was the better choice where the pacing was better and the weapon balance and variety and simplicity was just perfect.

...

eh, halo 1's vehicles just felt clunky and annoying to control. 2 and 3's vechiles were okay but they got crapped on by ut 2k4's

There was not a single vehicle in halo 2 or 3 that I found as fun to use as the manta or the badger in 2k4.

Plus modders added a lot of vehicles to 2k4. You have a bio tank that shoots out goo now, you don't' have that in gaylo. In fact that game hardly has any mods at all wheras UT 2k4 had a great modding community back in the day.

not to mentioin halo had shit movement values and its map designs were pretty bad for the most part. You basically just had boxes and large open maps that you got sniped on.

I don't like the 2 gun thing in the halo games mostly because it makes the map control overly simplistic and the gunplay pretty boring compared to an arena shooter like UT2k4 even if the weapon balance is poor in the UT series.

Booooooooring. Plus UT 2k4's onslaught probably has more players than halo online or halo 2's multiplayer anyway.

Yeah there are some players, most public servers that have players are running mutators like instagib, low grav, etc. but there is a mod called siege which adds rts elements to the assult mode and i actually found it to be pretty fun. You also have some vannila deathmatch servers which occasionally have players on them.

then some players on private servers doing 1v1's 2v2's etc. and use an IRC to set up matches

In case anyone else is following OpenArena 3's development, the developer posted this recently:
openarena.ws/board/index.php?topic=5224.msg53654#msg53654

The short video is taken from this post which he also made recently:

...

just a bump

that is it's purpose though

i think comparatively to other weapons it is too good right now. hopefully in the very least they make the bubble harder to hit and maybe buff the other weapons like make rocketlauncher be able to shoot 8 rockets and let the sniper fire faster

lets keep this thread going. heres another Xonotic frag movie, a bit old but it shows what skilled players can do.

looks bootiful

I'm pretty fucking sure he's talking about the piece of shit Toxikk and the now-kikestarted Midair, which are both slower than their inspirations.

m8 teeworlds was made in 2007

well quadropolis.us/ has some maps, and there is some competitive stuff, but they seem to have died down a lot in activity a few years ago. It also doesn't help that Tesseract (essentially Cube 2.5) also quickly died. Though thankfully there's several multiplayer servers that are full in Sauerbraten at times, even if they're almost always "24/7 VENICE CTF INSTAGIB RIFLES ONLY"
Embed related was from a competitive tournament. It came out in 2011, 5 years ago.
Sauerbraten's last official update was 3 years ago, not even other F/OSS games are that inactive when it comes to updates.

What you're more likely to see is more Red Eclipse maps nowadays.

I think counter-strike is so popular because
A, it got into the market early and has a legacy
B, because muh realism modern military shooter (the closest thing they had to tacticool back in the day before calladoody and iron sights)
C, because the TTK is so low, when playing at early stages you can still get kills on your opponents due to how unpredictable things can get.
I think that last point's pretty important. Even a shitter can jump onto calladoody and get one kill for every two deaths, despite how much longer everyone else has been playing for. Early on in CS, you can do the same thing by chance. However, in arena shooters, there's not a chance in hell you can really get a kill by chance/sneaking up on someone and you're gonna keep getting stomped on.

Also probably because muh esports.

The Xonotic equivalent is much more balanced, The first projectile arcs like a grenade and the radius is much smaller. So much more satisfying when you set one off.

Diggin' it.

What other voice packs should I attempt to do?

Reverend Manning

It hurts so bad… What this industry has become.

Start by making a game that doesn't pander to the worst sample of the community.
Make an actual good game instead of relying on mods will fix it, say no to glitch abuse and balance the game instead of sticking with the first thing that works. Make something that's fun to fuck around in for hours on public servers, rather than something that can only be played after reading a phone book of a manual, begging for a match on some IRC circlejerk and asking the other guy not to go too rough on you.

Not even baiting.

Actually buying games would probably help.

Old QL's matchmaking was shit, it punished you for winning and made it harder to improve, not easier. Would've been less frustrating to be thrown in with everyone from the start.

If arena shooters are like fighting games, they badly need a DOA or SC equivalent. Something that actually makes sense instead of being a freak accident that nobody questioned at its time. Quake 3 came close but it was dragged down by its legacy, being a sequel to a bonus multiplayer component of a single player maze shooter.

You mean a dead series nobody plays? There's plenty of those in arena shooter genre.

its the same for the new quake live matchmaking, but i would say worse.

for doing better in quake live, before, they would throw you into a box with some good fucking players. sure it would be hard but you learn so much in this time. new matchmaking however has fucking nowhere for tier-4 players. all servers are

And say no to fun

But the whole thing with these false revivals is mods will break our "monetization" strategy.

No thanks, I don't want RSI from a multiplayer game. Also watching k-styler matches is boring as shit, so I never felt motivated to learn how to do it

Honestly the only one I really play now is Reflex but to get a CTF match all I do is hop into an empty server and fuck around for a couple of minutes. Then I have 2 people per side, and start playing warmup, then we get 3-4 people with some minor rotation during/between matches. Not the highest quality teamplay or anything but it's fun as fuck

Same thing goes for duels and FFA really

Honestly AFPS can be summed up as "It's like fighting games, but if the scene was only Guilty Gear, KoF, Virtua Fighter, and EVO didn't exist"
I think AFPS could do alright if it pulled an FGC to an extent. Try to grab more players, really push new arena shooters to the forefront, centralize people even if you cant centralize the games (basically make a Quakecon that isnt about pushing bethshit products)
Kinda needs AAA marketing support on some level to work really well, but if people are willing to still support the games, it could work. Would require someone way better at organizing this shit than me though

I don't think it's big jiggly tiddies that AFPS lack. Don't most people who play fighting games focus on SF or Smash at this point?

It doesn't need to be completely playable as a new player, it just has to appear that way on the surface. Even fucking melee has weird mechanics new players cant pull off but people loved that game

Flak porch monkey till I drop dead. Which is usually by a Link Gun.

I would give Xonotic a try, everything else we currently have is crappy.

UT4 is total trash if you played the original. The current devs have no idea how ut works and they just throw stupid features into the game that don't fit the gamestyle ut has.

Toxikk is a crappy version of ut3, with worse weapons and shit.

CS was popular because it was a hard to learn deep game. The current cs version is totally downgraded. You got less spray patterns and movement is also downgraded. For example there are several ways to do simple things like peeking around corners.

Lol

It was easy to learn, buy AK or AWP, learn to bunnyhop(has a reputation for being difficult but its easy as fuck, just bind to mwheel down and alternate between air strafing left and right, anyone who thinks that there is anything difficult about that should be forced to throw away all the games he bought with his mom's credit card)

And then you have spread patterns, grenades and muh stationary shotting mechanics, just get a large mousepad and don't be a fucking retard.

Its easy, its pacing is shit, and its just an overall boring experience.

It got popular because it was easy, not difficult, and because it was published by valve who after creating half life earned a reputation for making good fps games, a reputation that they exploited and never once lived up to after that first half life game, then when it became popular enough people started deluding themselves into thinking it was challenging.

Xonotic is pretty fun, tried it a bit and had a good time. Does Holla Forums have its own server?

people are usually fucking around on the modded vehicle server or the instagib+hook public servers for hours in Xonotic. deathmatch is pretty fun too

are you referring to bunny hopping?
Xonotic, Warsow and Quake Live have autohop now (hold down jump button to jump continuously), and Xonotic limits strafe jumping/circle jumping so that the game isn't reliant on it, they're only unlimited on race servers.

if the game was made less "complicated" then it would become boring
it would help to have an in-game tutorial level, like some singleplayer thing to get new players started. Warsow has one already that covers some of the basics.

what do you think "balance" is in these games?
the only things i find unbalanced in vanilla Xonotic right now is that the machinegun is inferior against any other single pickup weapon, and the vehicles need balancing. the machinegun already has a replacement in the game that you can use but its still being worked on, its a weird bendy lightning gun called the Arc.

which games are doing that?

ok, lets see what you can buy.

they're both early access. i don't think Reflex will ever be popular enough because its meant for CPMA players.
it was more popular when it was free from what i understand.

old stuff, who the fuck knows where the money goes when you buy it anyway? they are all easily pirated as well.

i don't see the point of Reflex, is there a great need for another CPMA derivative?
is it just me or are there not many maps for Reflex and Toxikk?

people are usually fucking around on the modded vehicle server or the instagib+hook public servers for hours in Xonotic. deathmatch is pretty fun too

Reflex isn't just meant to be a CPM port, it's just the baseline (much like how CPM used Quake's mechanics as a jumping point). We'll see how it develops but they already want to change at least a few of the weapon dynamics and add some new movement options in that aren't based around a special move button (which is how that shit is usually handled)

Also as far as maps go, there's a fuckton of them, the question is one of quality and the sort of maps you're interested in. The map editor makes it really easy to pump out maps in a relatively short period of time

The thing I hate about goldsrc/source bhop is that their attempts to gimp it only make it more finnicky. I'd really rather play with the pogo-hop system of Quake 1 than a shitty scroll wheel jump because they made the jump window so fucking small
They still haven't killed it fully either (as of current patch CS:GO), from what I've heard, even though CoD fixed that shit in its first iteration and only accidentally kept circle jumping and overbounce

Yeah making the window so small didn't make it more difficult it just lead to mwheel spam and repetitive motion syndrome in the middle finger.

It was one of the stupidest things they could have done and all it really accomplished was giving people who disliked it the inability to flip them off because after such excessive use their middle fingers had to be surgically removed.

Fuck valve. The only good games they've made are portal 1, half life 1, and tf2 the later of which they fucked up and the former they made lackluster sequels too.

none as far as i know. there are a lot of empty public servers though, some may even let you vote for different modes.

people have been doing in-game map editing for years on Cube 2 engine games already, including online with other players. its too bad more games don't have in-game map editing

this sounds nice and all, but not nice enough to make me want to buy a proprietary early access Steam only game.

fug, triple posted

VERSION 7.1
pastebin.com/cpjZmazY

There is nothing significant about this change. I pretty much just fixed the teleport issue, added a new way to run addons with shortcuts, and added a link to a more comprehensive mapping guide. I have been slacking off and still feel lazy as fuck but I wanted to finally post a fix for the issue with the map as it was completely broken

I am pretty sure that you finish dreamhack and esl one first every year.

Yeah for sure, not suggesting that you necessarily buy an early access game, but just explaining where the game's at and roughly where it's going from what I've seen/heard. It's been worth it for me so far (something like 300 hours played but I got the game when it launched after watching gameplay vids from Quake vets and a lot of those hours are fucking around with movement and maps) but it's definitely not for everyone. I hope it differentiates itself enough and has enough "training wheels" content for launch

There's a difference between the fundamentals of a game being easy to learn and 100% top-level consistency being easy to pull off. The first is actually desirable, though I don't know that it accurately describes any version of CS given the lack of direct feedback on spread and a few other weird mechanics

And this is what makes cs good. There is always space for improvement.

I am doing bhop maps since years with others, and those shit maps are still hard. I have also been on servers with speedrunners, the best bhoppers out there and even they have a hard time on new maps.

Also, pro players are sometimes doing 1vs1 matches before their actual matches start and sometimes even they get destroyed by pub players.

Why would I want to compete in such a boring shitpile of a game anyway?

Besides I'd lose because hacking account for 90% of that game's skill and outside of dark souls I've never even touched any kind of hack or cheat engine in my life.

idk, maybe because of the 250k prize money? I mean cs is a easy game, should be easy to reach the top.

Except the type of mouse config that is optimal for cunter-strike and the type of mouse config that is optimal for xonotic, UT, or quake, is completely different. Nobody plays at 20+ inches per 360 in quake without some form of mouse accel.

You can't put a price on doing what you like or on NOT doing what you dislike. That's entirely subjective and I for one do not think that a mere chance at beating some Norwegian hacker who communicates with his teammates via telepathy for a prize of 250k would be worth putting in the effort to build up muscle memory for a mouse config that would make me shittier at the kinds of games I actually like to play.

Besides if a game is easy that would mean that it wouldn't be hard to find a lot of players at very high skill levels since the skill ceiling is so low. Winning a tournament in a game with a low enough skill ceiling would require more luck than it would skill.

How many other competitive fps games have a guy with no arms playing competitively anyway? oh right none, because no other "competitive" game asside from assfaggots is as much of a joke as you're RNG hitscan shitpile.

He played competitively in that game too faggot.

Very well.

Other voice packs I have up for consideration

And thats about it.

I've also made the Postal Dude

Shit I've always had ideas that would be cool for that and now none of them are coming to me

Good for you and your gud. The question was "How do you get more people to play?" Getting newbies crushed by the elite will frustrate most of today's players.

Then again, you elitist scumbags just need a server to call your own to be away from lesser filth.

Add "Servers/Server Browser" to the list of how to make a decent Arena Shooting experience.

Toppest of keks m8, fucking pre-teens could play CS easily. The only real hard part is teamwork and even that doesn't matter much when you can solo the enemy team.

That's the hard thing though, map awareness and strats.
Niggers shooting gud is a minor part of the game.

I enjoy watching Quakecon every year and I'd love if we could get a revival of the genre and Tribes, CS is not that kind of FPS and it's more tactical in nature and tournaments are actually 5v5 instead of 1v1.

Which is what most of them do, hence "pickup" IRC channels and servers. The current state of the genre can be (partially) attributed to these walled garden communities. That, and the focus on 1v1 rather than team-based modes.

So is the new Unreal worth playing I've been holding off do the lack of content and it being an alpha.

As said in this thread, I would not recommend it

web.archive.org/web/20160424154902/http://8ch.net/v/res/9112771.html

it's a slow shooter that died for a reason.

Map awarness if fucking easy in CS because Dust2 is the only map people actually play on.

No need to learn other maps because the autistic clusterfuck of a community won't bother to populate servers running them.

Other user's being a gay. It's coming along fine and might be fun to play for a few matches, but I would hold off until it's in at least a near-finished state.

Is Unvanquished worth looking at?

it is already fun as fuck, there is no reason to not play it now

Nah there is plenty of reason to hold off.

They only have deathmatch and CTF at them moment, plus the link gun pull is a death sentence. I've gotten so many mindless frags with that that I am unable to delude myself into thinking its balanced.

So, it has the two most popular gametypes in unreal and that is a reason to not play it? Also the link gun has always been OP, it is a tier 1 weapon in the right hands and always has been. Play the original games

It was never as powerful as it is in this. The link gun pull makes it way easier to track players than it should be and its practically a death sentence if someone uses it on you. Besides mingun often won out over pulse gun in UT 99 the dps was comparable and it had more range. Maybe you are the one who needs to play the original games.

99 and 2k4 both had other modes like assult, domination, bombing run, etc. and not every single UT player is going to be interested in deathmatch and CTF even if they are the most popular game modes.

Besides those game modes are available in UT 99 and 2k4 right now and Epic wasn't owned by fucking Tencent when they made those games.

Why not just play them instead of this unfinished game made by developers who have their heads up their asses and answer to a shady chink company?

You are a butthurt shill and should fuck off.

the chaingun was terrible in unreal gold/tournament as well. it has never "won out" over me with a pulse rifle, it was so fucking bad in the original games most people didn't even have a bind set for it a-la nailgun in quake 1. in unreal tounament 4 the chaingun is at least viable if you know how to aim. have you fired up unreal recently? the only servers populated at all are instakill servers for pub players, nobody played any of those gametypes then and again i am not wrong when i state that the two most popular gametypes in unreal are in unreal 4. ut4 is a beta, it isn't finished yet and there is no set release date. nobody is saying every gametype is there or that it is a complete replacement for unreal. i am claiming that it is a good game in it's current state well worth a try and in my opinion plays much better than the previous games in the series. that is why i think anyone who enjoys either ctf or ffa should play it, it plays better than the original games.
kill yourself

You are so full of shit, people complain about its overuse all the time in ut 99. That and shock combo, and rocket spam obviously.

As for Unreal Gold, why would you even bring that up? There is no pulse gun/link gun in that game so you can't compare the minigun to it in that.

Somebody needs to replay some games. I fisted your asshole and your breath smells like my hand.

Also as far as UT 99 goes, plenty of people still play the siege mod which unlike instagay and low grav, is actually fun and you can occasionally find some vannila deathmatch servers.

As for UT 2k4, I've had absolutely no issue finding deathmatch servers though most people are doing onslaught.

And when it comes to CTF I hate to say it but, CTF in UT sucks ass and always has due to the spammable translocators.

Getting to the flag is just a transloc spamfest and the best way to defend the flag is to fucking camp it since they won't be able to xloc spam once they get the flag. The stupid gadget encourages camping further in a game mode where its already viable to the point of being fucktarded, and it craps on level designs by scaling them up to accomodate for players who are going to be spamming those fuckers.

As far as I'm concerned UT has among the worst CTF I've ever seen.

I guess if you like playing your games in a fashion similar to that of a kid with down syndrome, then you might enjoy UT 4's ctf, if not you may as well just fuck off and play some other arena shooter or tribes if you want that. Maybe even try your hand at vehcile ctf in 2k4 because anything is better than CTF in UT 99 and UT 4.

That's actually not true, some Quake vets even play with 30+

For instance, Hal_9000 plays at ~36cm/360 @110fov and 1280x1024 in CPM by his own admission

Do people even buy this shit?

Does CTF work in any game that doesn't have FAST?
In recent memory I feel like I've only ever enjoyed CTF in Tribes, Xonotic, and Fortress Forever.

After watching a video of pic related singing Moonman KKK, I found a contender for more voice packs

...

You'd think Valve would offer refunds when a game becomes unplayable

That's not a bad thing.

Any popular game should come with a BroodWar style post-gameplay grading advisory for any server setup where the level of play is graded by a moving average calculated from player stats and is shown to a player before they join.

Being able to get shit on is fun. Especially when it's the norm. Get shit on by a pro and you'll understand why.
Being shit on because the player-base is dead is a different matter altogether. Go shit up the Infinity Ward forums.

The number 1 reason for the decline of arena shooters is that quake 3 already exists. Any attempts to modernise the concept only result in visual clutter and distracting useless features

there was some madman who said it played like an old school doom clone
even the TF2 people are complaining about not enough rocket jumping. this crap that gets shilled to death here gets more attention than all of the arena shooters combined.

its not an arena shooter, its a FPS/RTS hybrid like Tremulous or Natural Selection.
its free, seems to be good but i haven't played it online myself. its in alpha so don't expect too much, there don't seem to be many players yet either.

Epic plans to make money through how their engine is licensed. if you make over a certain amount with your commercial game or mod made with UE4 they take a percentage of the money.

its nothing like the original Nexuiz or Xonotic from what i hear, so probably not.

yeah thats why i have no interest in these games that can just go poof like that. closest thing you could play is Xonotic, since its a fork of the original Nexuiz which nuNexuiz takes some inspiration from.

i understand that you love Quake 3 but you can't possibly be this delusional.

how new are you

CPM is already better than VQ3 though, so clearly improvements can be made

Okay I'm an amerilard so i didn't know how much that was at first but I looked it up, 36 centimeters is only 14.17 inches. That's pretty low but not to the point of being ludicrous and a lot of cunter strike players play on sensitivies higher than that. Perhaps you thought I meant centimeters and not inches. 20+ inches per 360 would be like 50.8 centimeters per 360, compared to that, 36 centimeters per 360 is actually pretty reasonable and gives a much better balance between being able to do quick 180s on a frequent basis and being able to actually fucking aim.

50 centimeters per 360 can work in cunter strike because it has stationary shooting mechanics and camping is fairly prevalent(though it doesn't necessarily dominate), Counter strike is more about making small adjustments to your aim so you can click on heads and control recoil better, and its one of the reasons why I've always considered it boring, Sorry But I don't feel like camping dust 2 for the millionth time and sliding my arm across the table just to make the crosshair go from some guys torso to his head.

Quake and other arena shooters aren't like that and players rely more heavily on strafe aim and need to be able to have a better balance between mousepad space and being able to aim properly for a variety of reasons, and the vast majority of players using sensitivites anywhere near that low are using some form of mouse accel.

Problem is a lot of these surveys of pro quake players don't take that into account.

I know there are always exceptions but most of those hurrr durrr 55 centimeters per 360 because muh extra low sens players are using mouse accel.

Mouse accel is everywhere on the pro scene in quake live because unlike most games quake live actually has reliable mouse accel. You can adjust the mouse accel threshold, and the ammount, and I don't believe its dependant on factors like frames per second or dpi either which presents problem to people who use mouse accel in other games since it makes mouse movements inconsistent.

That being said mouse accel and making jump height independant of fps, is pretty much the only thing the quake live engine did right. Its a steaming turd in most other ways and the performance on a lot of modern rigs is fucking shit with people experiencing huge framerate drops on large maps with moderate player counts.

Yeah I totally did read it as cm and I have no idea how I managed that shit. My apologies

The survey I took that info from did actually take accel into account (by simply having that instead of cm/360. It wasn't quite as widespread as I thought it might be, but it was surprising to see who used it

I'll link the data in question below. It features Reflex data primarily but a lot of that is copied over and Hal notes the difference in his resolution between the two games
docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZIwA9K7OCVUcZ4id7wb0UPpo_iJWghO55BU1H3ERCrg/edit#gid=1053392502

Shit and now I fucked that up. Meant to link to

Mm. Tough call.

Git gud :^)
On a more serious note, there's quite a few people in Reflex willing to help out with newbies if you're genuinely interested in having a good time. The movement skills aren't transferable to anything other than Quake and Quake-offshoots but getting into the habit of managing timers and firing predictive shots based on optimal paths towards them can be learned in any AFPS. I dunno what the new player experience is like in any of the UT offshoots as I don't play them.

If you're interested in learning shit on your own, most of the Reflex tutorial vids and guides apply to CPM (some of them are ripped straight from CPM, like Massman's CTF guide) which you can easily torrent somewhere (all you need is a copy of Q3 and the client from playmorepromode) or even to PQL and, to a lesser extent, VQ3 and "classic" Quake Live

Hell, if you're interested in Reflex, I can help you learn how to move properly and all that shit. You wont be great at it (I know I'm not) but once you get the fundamentals down it's all about conscientious practice, just like anything else

Eh. If I want to get my shit pushed in, I'll stick with the driving genre. I at least have fun no matter what there.

You could try onslaught in UT 2k4, you can still find full servers in that.

Its got vehicles and they control pretty well and are pretty well balance, so it could be good for you since you like driving games. I don't think onslaught is too difficult compared to other game modes.

Xonotic has vehicles too but I've found them to be buggy and not control as well, but I am an amerilard and the only server that has vehilces is in europe so its out of my ping range so maybe this is why every time I get into any vehicle other than the one with legs I rubberband all over the place. Oh well, the vehicle with legs is the only one that I like anyway.

Also they need to fix the tank in xonotic, its horrendously overpowered and because it kills everything in one hit. A camping tank or two can completely wreck an enemy team.

what other casualised games do you enjoy user?

I've been playing it recently, there's not many players in Australia, but it seems pretty nice.

Looks great, as a bonus.

Are there ever?

I've been playing for a few days and most matches have a few bots in them for numbers.

Sauerbraten should be pretty simple to get into, at least for instagib. same deal for AssaultCube

Red Eclipse was pretty casual last time i checked

what helped me go from absolute trash in Xonotic to sometimes coming first in deathmatch was learning some of the game, configuring the game to my liking, watching other players who are better than me and sometimes playing with players who are better than me.
this guide helped me a lot with the first two gitlab.com/xonotic/xonotic/wikis/Halogenes_Newbie_Corner
i'm still messing with configuring the game, nice thing about Xonotic is that its very configurable.

if you get too close the tank will probably run you over too.
its worth mentioning that the vehicle server is a bit different from vanilla Xonotic since it uses modded weapons and stuff, but i'm pretty sure the vehicles would still be unbalanced regardless.

sure, it happens all the time, doesn't mean that i can't complain.

If you're playing pub team games you probably wont get your shit pushed in. If you're doing cpmpickup or something yeah sure you're gonna be going up against vets, but there's actual new players in some of these newer AFPS games

Also if you enjoy weird movement there's a race mode in Warsow, Xonotic (iirc), Quake 3 and Reflex (I'm sure there's more, those are just the ones I'm aware of)

You are right, i don't see it in gold, i don't know what the fuck im talking about

One thing that's really helped me get better at arena shooters is going spec on the person who has the highest score on a public server.

You will often learn things about the maps and the games mechanics that you would otherwise not have known. Like weird places to position yourself or certain applications of various game mechanics that you didn't think were possible.

Also Its really sad to see that there are game modes in xonotic which no servers are running. The game has onslaught but no server running it comes up in the browser.

I would run a server myself and try to get people to join it via generals on /v but I don't have money to build a server or rent one.

I plan to get a job soon but I am probably not going to get payed top dollar or anything considering I'm not qualified to become a doctor or engineer and thus won't pursue those jobs.

there is indeed a race mode in Xonotic and Red Eclipse has one too.

yeah its a shame but i don't think it will happen until something causes a boost in players. which will probably happen once the Xonotic devs decide the game is finally good enough to put on Steam and start telling everyone outside the arena shooter community that it exists.
there are high paying jobs that aren't engineering or medical jobs, but then again i guess it might depend on where you live.

Well we could also try to make generals about it right before primetime hours in europe and North America.

Since the devs don't have the resources to market it that seems to be the only way to get more people to play the game, that and steam groups.

So what are the best mods for UT?
Both '99 and 2k4

I'd be willing to reinstall Xonotic if it meant not having to play fucking instagib if I wanna drop in and play

I can't promise I'll be any good, but I'll show up

they could probably get the money tonight to get it on greenlight and put some effort into advertising it on the internet, by making videos and advertising on social media websites.
they seem to be more worried about leaving a bad impression by advertising it prematurely.
source: xonotic.org/posts/2013/about-xonotic-and-steam/

i have to agree with them, theres various things they need to do like finishing the Arc and replacing the machinegun with it, rebalance and polish the vehicles, port the game to the Daemon engine, etc.
they could probably use more contributors than they have now

usually i can get on a deathmatch server with players or on the vehicle server. if theres nobody on you can try joining a deathmatch server and screw around, people tend to join the servers with players on them.

saving thread from death

forgot to mention, i think almost all the free games support LAN.

test

So what game has the best announcer?

lets at least get to the bump limit before this thread dies

it isn't alone, The Dark Mod, Red Eclipse, 0 A.D., and Zero-K have pretty nice graphics too. some of 0 A.D.'s unit models are pretty crappy though.

isn't that a class based FPS?

I love the shit out of Xonotic.
Not too into arena shooters so I don't know how it compares to others but I love it. Especially the grapple hook CTF matches.

quake 3a__

If you think Xonotic or its community is even remotely good, you should've had your skull smashed in when you were a baby

yes, YES

Wew lads
Thanks for popping in to drop your turd opinion without any talking points.

That seems kind of fucking stupid.

Not bad

Not homing.

They track your crosshair if you hold the fire button.

And it's not like the half-life "follow the red dot" magic rockets.
It's more like a slight steering, like throwing a curve ball.

UT has homing rockets too you know

please elaborate on your povocative statement

People keep referring to class-based shooters as arena shooters for some reason. I saw someone in in another thread refer to blizzard making "casual games like arena shooters" or some similarly faggoty thing

I also had a guy try to argue that nuDOOM is still an arena shooter even though it has loadouts, almost no map control, and no movement skill curve, but that was somewhere else entirely

I remember when it released on Steam, people on here kept referring to it as an arena shooter.

People will refer to anything that has a rocket launcher and isn't Calladooty as an arena shooter.

the whole point of an ARENA shooter is that you are dropped into an arena to compete. are you saying team fortress for quake 1 isn't an arena shooter, and if so why not? you all start with potentially the exact same gear, you think roman arenas had people pick up gear in the arena always? you think they didn't start with gear or some shit? or that they always started with the same gear? get over yourself

Then why don't we call nearly every FPS out there an arena shooter?

While we're at it, let's call DOTA and LoL RTS games.

Team Fortress is not an arena shooter. Every shooter ever is set in an arena by design. Please don't act like a retard, this isn't a Youtube comment section or Reddit

The thing that separates Quake, UT etc. from other shooters is that they're based around the idea of utilizing item control to complete objectives. Whereas in Team Fortress, you can spawn, run into the opposing base, and frag the shit out of people (maybe even get a full flag run in straight outta spawn), in Arena Shooters you need to make sure you're equipped with armor and weapons or you're going to get slapped down hard. The idea behind this is that the game isn't almost entirely decided by aim, like it is in games with loadouts and slow movement. You can win by knowing which items to prioritize, when they come up, how you can best deny them etc. Arena Shooters also typically come with a movement component that allows people to get better at map traversal over time, but this isn't really the signature feature, it's just a huge draw for people who like to diversify their skillset and/or go fast.

the devs keep fucking up the game with stuff no one wants. random changes to weapons every update, last one they fucking added "full out-of-the-box gamepad support" and removed a popular map because "it looks incredibly dated."

this is news
which dev did you talk to?

It is more arena shooter than anything else, TBH. Loadouts and progression unlocks fuck things up real good, but it still has the pillars of an arena shooter.

Keeping your stack, in my experience with the betas, was very important. So understanding armor locations is pretty important. It's too bad universal ammo and loadouts completely destroy that second layer most traditional arena shooters have.

Between Mega, Quad, and Haste, there is still a need to understand where these spawn and when they spawn to give yourself a strategic advantage.

While this has been limited and simplified in Doom mainly to Demon Rune, Gaus, and Quad, map control is still very important and was the determining factor in a good majority of the matches I played.

Eliminating strafe jumping and capping acceleration/momentum hurts for sure. MuSlim does have the double jump and (what I find to be a manditory item) the personal teleporter that do add a bit of learning curve and depth to movement. Avoiding ledge grabs or making sure ledge grab a happen on the earliest possible frame while carrying forward momentum does shave off seconds and can be tricky. It's no VQ3 or CPMA, but advanced movement is on par with UT, I'd say.

The game is too slow and I despise load outs and unlocks, but there is some potential there.

bump

Still not an AFPS
Loadouts and progression destroy even spawns, majorly reducing the need for map control

Weapons and Ammo being as easily handed out as they are destroys strats that depend on weapon or ammo denial

I've yet to see a map where health and ammo aren't nearly fucking everywhere, and it doesn't matter anyway because if you die after say… 2 kills you respawn with full fucking health and a RL, SS, or one of two RGs anyway

Just having powerups is not sufficient. If CoD used its killstreaks like powerups, it wouldn't suddenly become an arena shooter. Map control is important in any shooter with positional advantage or an objective, it is a skillset in AFPS

Double jump is shit. They designed shit maps around it so of course you need to use it. Ledge grabs are even worse
The not-translocator is already in UT alongside a much more capable movement system. I'm not a fan of UT myself, but suggesting its movement is on par with nuDoom suggests you never took the time to learn how its movement system works

There's no potential in nuDoom without full modding (and all we get is the Halo Forge). It's a straight-up console shooter without health regen. If you wanna hop in the retard bucket go ahead, but don't pretend it's more than what it is

Of course it fucking wouldn't. What does that have to do with nuDoom? Power ups and power weapons still spawn on the map with specific cooldowns. How is this anything like CoD?

I think nuDoom has pretty average multiplayer, I didn't love it or anything… but you are exaggerating so much here it's hard to take you seriously.

If nuDoom is a an arena shooter then so is Halo 5, which does everything better and doesn't have loadouts. You have actual power ups that don't feel like mario kart gimmicks and map control actually matters. Better movement too which is funny/sad. Once the next CoD/Battlefront come out the nuDoom servers will be ghost towns. Arguing about the term is useless, no one talking about AFPS will be grouping in nuDoom.

Really no reason to ever talk about nuDoom other then it being a case study of just how fucked up management can make shit.

hey guys what about chaosesque anthology

OP makes a post about arena shooters that are more or less free… Mentions Marathon

Fucking casuals.

The Halo series has more in common with call of duty than it does with quake UT, or xonotic and halo 1 is no different.

Its about as much of an arena shooter as some shitty tower defense flash game is an rts.

Fuck halo, worst thing to happen to the fps genre by a longshot fuck you for mentioning it.

As for nudoom all I can say is you're either a retard or a shill for defending it. even if its technically an arena shooter its an abomination of one and just like halo the only excuse it has for being shitty is the fact that it was made for muh thumbsticks.

Stop being an overactove memlord and trying too hard to fit in.
What's the point of pissing and whining like this?

Speed is not the most important qualifier of an arena shooter

Because making you pick your fights is a negative thing?

Gravity to low…. That sounds literally subjective as fuck

If your a tard and have no idea how to crouch jump and hit a direction yeah sure

{ also which is it faggot is the gravity two low and you float or is there not enough air control, both of these things cannot be true at the same time }

False regenerating shields non regenerating health. Split the difference.

Implying the pc version has but the minimum assist to compensate for shitty track and ball mice of the time period, and to help compensate for latency. Sounds like an improvement to me.

Track-ball mice weren't bad.

I invite you to go hook one up and use it.

I bet you've never even played Marathon

Warsow frag videos are some of the fastest cleanest frag videos available.

Shame about

Was wondering where the steam release was, we could certainly use the players.

It's really important though. You can't be slower than half life and have a good arena shooter.

Ammo limits can do that too. You had to pick your fights since the earliest days of FPS games. Also having 2 weapons doesn't somehow make the game more tactical. It's like arguing that fighting game characters should have less moves, it's stupid. When games only have a 2 weapon limit, all the weapons end up being homogenized, since players can't be expected to hang onto specialized weapons.

I'm with you on low gravity, doesn't seem like it fits in, but the air control in halo really does suck. All arena FPS games have good air control, ever since quake.

They're seriously the same thing in practice, stop bullshitting. Your shields are effectively your health. The amount of health underneath them is tiny.

What does that have to do with anything?

I never claimed that bungie sucks ass at making games only that they did a pisspoor job with halo 1 which is true.

Halo 1 dosen't hold up to its sequels at all in spite of what many nostalgiafaggots claim and there are even some console shooters such as Metroid Prime that it can't hold up to either.

Honestly were it not for the abomination that was halo 4 I'd say it were the worst game in its respective series.

You do realize that being floaty and having air control are two different things right.

When I say floaty I mean the gravity is so low that it feels like you are floating and when I say almost no air control I literally mean that you have almost no control over you're movement while airborne.

Compare this to quake 3 cpma where you have air strafe and can pretty much just kill your momentum while using a jump pad just by pressing S in mid air and its pretty apparent that you have very little control over where you are going while airbourne in halo.

All you can do in halo is slide in one direction but you do it so goddamn slow that its near imperceptible. Quake 3 v3q has more air control than that.

Crouch jump has nothing to do with it either I know how to fucking crouch jump I've played enough goldsource/source games including half-life which has a tutorial for that to know how to do it. I know how to get to get from point A to point B, I'm just saying that getting there feels like complete and utter shit and the lack of freedom of movement that halo has compared to other arena shooters is completely fucking gay.

While I am at it I think I should mention that pretty much all of the guns suck in halo 1 and the pistol is horrendously imbalanced and 90% of halo 1's multiplayer just consists of shooting people in the head with that crappy aim assisted shitscan weapon. The rest conists of using vehicles most of which control like shit with keyboard and mouse anyway thought I'll give them the benefit and mouse for xboner controllers and I think that the vehicles controlling like ass had more to do with the fact that they were too cheap to make a decent port.

Honestly I don't know why you'd even bring up halo 1 when you could have just mentioned halo online instead. Still a tremendously overrated game that pales in comparison to Unreal tournament 2004, but at least halo 2 and 3 didn't suck the shit out of my grandmothers ass and managed to be fairly decent.

It's still technically an arena shooter. It doesn't have to be a good one, but it definitely is one.

True but its also technically gay and if you play it then you probably like putting dicks in your butt.

mikee pls go

That's clearly not what I was saying at all, given the context
If you made it such that the current killstreak effects were activated by picking up powerups on the map, CoD would not become an AFPS. It would not become an AFPS if you added it to Advanced Warfare either.

Even with the "Classic" mode from MW added in (all weapons are picked up instead of selected in loadouts) it wouldn't be an AFPS because there's really no need or ability to control item usage in general. You can kill someone pretty quickly/easily with most of the weapons in that game (with some variance attributed to balance or a lack thereof)

I don't see how. Health regen (even partial) and loadouts are the antithesis of AFPS gameplay

Halo 1 and 2 didn't really have loadouts, from what I understand. Still map control in the halo games is incredibly simplistic compared to how it is in a proper arena shooter.

Loadouts aren't present in Halo 1-3
Halo: CE does use a health system underneath the regenerating shield.

Again, not a good arena shooter, but an arena shooter none the less.

Meant to say two weapon limit, somehow edited it back to loadouts. My point is that you're not really going to be able to do much in the way of resource denial in that instance

Partial regen is still regen.

I don't really see how regen disuqalifies as an arena shooter.

Because one of the key distinguishing factors in an AFPS is resource control. In Quake, UT, Xonotic, Reflex, Warsow etc. your ability to aim can come second to your opponents ability to deny you good weapons and health/armor upgrades. By adding in a 2 weapon limit and health regen, you reduce or eliminate that factor. If I can just grab one weapon (50% of my total weapons) and hide in a corner to return to full combat strength, there's no reason for mobility and there's no reason for a greater amount of map control

That's the issue nuDoom has as well. By reducing pickups to a handful of powerups, it ensures that there's no need to use large swaths of the map. If I can frag 3 people off of spawn, why should I worry about the rest of the map? If I can hold the Demon Rune, why shouldn't I just do that? It reduces the game down to a moving point KOTH when it should be more like trying to take resources in an RTS

I don't know how you are construing this into a CoD arguement. Dooms TTK is nowhere near as fast as CoD, and the power ups + power weapons are extremely powerful. Not trying to control these areas of the map would be pretty dumb.

Stack is also still very important, health maybe abundant, but this might be particular to team modes. No way of knowing yet.

Fucking hate this shit.

Because by simply modifying the health value and making killstreaks powerups, how do you have anything different?

You're also arguing against something that is the opposite of what I actually said. Demon Rune and the Power Weapon are the parts of map you want to control. This is somewhat an issue though, when you consider the fact that that's pretty much it. Stack is far FAR less important when you get to spawn with weapons that can shred people. The point behind stack in Q3 and other AFPS games is not only to keep yourself from getting fragged, but also to preserve your weapon advantage. By making weapon advantage equal (shit weapon balance aside) all the time, you just make it about frags, and reduce it down to just pure combat strength. If I get 2 kills for every one death, it ultimately doesn't matter what my stack is. I'll spawn with a weapon that does 50 damage or more and be on even offensive footing. If my aim is just noticeably better than my opponents, I'll still win. In Q3 you're not going to take out your opponent solo with the MG while he has stack unless he's a shitter, and your fight for a key item or weapon on the map has more significance. Your ability to read the scenario and plan appropriately around enemy position and item availability is just as key a skill as your ability to frag

This is a change purely about casualizing the game for controller users, and it runs contrary to one of the key components of AFPS. It IS, however, totally in line with the design philosophy of console shooters.
