eregime.org/index.php?showforum=1313

An attempt to simulate Albanian politics during the Communist era through the careful insemination of sheep, kidnapping the daughters of your rivals, and cursing your enemies with the evil eye.

read that as

The similarities are eerie.

I think Kanun is a pretty cool guy. Eh kills the cousin of the guy that killed his brother and doesnt afraid of anything

From memoirs of British officers sent to Albania during the war:

kek, it warms my heart to know hoxha was this much of an autist

Recollections of American officers in Albania during the war:

And shortly after the war:

i don't get it

why live?

During 1946 visit to Belgrade,

oh my god that's fantastic

Not so much funny as tragic in a way:

...

i remember reading about the early albanian communist movement. hoxha was basically like stalin: basically everyone who was active in the 1920's and 30's communist movement was purged after he came to power so that albanian communism began with hoxha rather than the many people he purged.

Something similar happened in North Korea.

If you read any North Korean text on the Communist movement there, they literally credit Kim Il Sung with founding the first genuine communist group at the age of 14 (the "Down-with-Imperialism Union") and disparage all the other groups as well as the official Comintern Korean Communist Party because they were all "flunkeys" and "sectarians". The real reason is because almost all those involved in those endeavors were executed or imprisoned in the 1950's when Kim destroyed the pro-Soviet and pro-Chinese factions in his party.

+1

I read it as REALISTIC ALABAMA SIMULATOR too

IMO Hoxha was worse than Stalin. At least Stalin turned Russia into a powerhouse. Even Tito made Yugo grow. Albania was a shithole, he turned it into a smelless shithole, cause everyone was a revisionist and he was a special snowflake that nobody understood. In the end they had to have a wave of immigration to Greece of all places to have any growth.

There is no worth, other than memes, in Hoxhaism.

...

The funny thing is that the Soviets, after Khrushchev was ousted (he had a vendetta against Hoxha for humiliating him in 1960), offered to restore diplomatic and trade relations with Albania every year. The Albanians responded by calling the USSR "social-fascist" and refusing to renew relations.

Like Albania did make impressive gains in economics and social progress even if it still remained Europe's poorest country. A lot of development was due in part to Soviet and later Chinese assistance. But Hoxha kept on shooting his country in the foot for what I can only see as an attempt to remain in power. He pulled a Stalin-esque purge of the army in the 70's because he claimed Zhou Enlai organized a coup plot against him. He forced the most important military leader of the national liberation war (Mehmet Shehu) to commit suicide. Albania was the only country in Eastern Europe after the 50's where political disgrace was followed by execution, since it was the only one that kept to Stalin-esque methods.

And his attacks on "revisionism" were very largely either gross exaggerations or just wrong. The Albanians and Chinese ended up taking terrible lines in international affairs, like that the USA and USSR had indistinguishable foreign policies, Cuban and South African troops in Angola were the exact same, the Mujahideen was a heroic force…..

From left to right: Sadik Bekteshi (arrested), Spiro Moisiu (initially condemned, then rehabilitated by time photo was taken), Kadri Hazbiu (shot), Beqir Balluku (shot), Enver Hoxha, Mehmet Shehu (shot himself to avoid being shot), Petrit Dume (shot), Mihalaq Ziçishti (arrested), Aranit Çela

Khrushchev at the 22nd Congress of the CPSU in 1961:

"In appealing at that time to the Albanian leaders, we were prompted by humane considerations, by the desire to prevent the shooting of a woman who, moreover, was pregnant. We considered, and still consider, that as a fraternal party we had a right to express our opinion on the matter. Indeed, even in the periods of the blackest reaction the tsarist satraps, who tortured revolutionaries, could not bring themselves to execute pregnant women. And here was a socialist country that had sentenced to death, and executed, a woman who was about to become a mother."

Hoxhaists unironically support this.

...

Since we are on about purges. . .

Stalin didn't even just purge many of the "General Staff" of 1917.

The Presidium of the Soviet congress that ratified the 1936 constitution consisted of N. Aitakov, V. Akhun-Babayev, I. Akulov, A. Andreyev, V. Blükher, S. Budyonny, A. Chervyakov, V. Chubar, R. Eikhe, L. Kaganovich, M. Kalinin, N. Khrushchev, A. Kiselev, S. Kosior, M. Litvinov, P. Lyubchenko, A. Mikoyan, V. Molotov, G. Musabekov, G. Ordzhonikidze, G. Petrovsky, A. Rakhimbayev, Y. Rudzutak, N. Shvernik, J. Stalin, D. Sulimov, K. Vorsohilov, N. Yezhov and A. Zhdanov.

Aitakov, Akulov, Blükher, Chervyakov, Chubar, Eikhe, Kiselev, Kosior, Lyubchenko, Musabekov, Rakhimbayev, Rudzutak, Sulimov and Yezhov were shot over the next few years. As for Petrovsky: "Soon after the USSR celebrated its sixteenth birthday, he was interrogated by Joseph Stalin, who told him, 'We shoot people like you but you will be spared' and then was excluded from the Communist Party and deprived of his dachas and apartments."

why stalin, why did you shoot people who were loyal to you ;_;

My dad (an Armenian) was deployed to Afghanistan in the 80's. Said it was pretty boring since he wasn't on combat duty and spent most of his time improving TV and radio receptions.

My aunt's ex got deployed there too, only as part of a penal battalion (he tried to desert) sent there secretly by Ceaușescu to help the Soviets.

They got wiped out nearly to a man, and a fair bit of that was Russian artillery. Although they were told never to talk about it and they never did, him and the other guy that survived got invited to a conference held by the Pentagon right on the eve of the Afghan War in 2001.

I'm not sure what that has to do with Albania, but that's my story.

It proves that even Afghanistan is better than Albania.

I always feel bad for Najibullah. Guy tried to make Afghanistan a modern country, was left-wing, and he got murdered by the Taliban for his efforts.

Also this happened: youtube.com/watch?v=QlNjeZHXeJo

some guy is running a PDPA-era Afghanistan game on the forum OP linked to, that's probably why

Can any anons explain to me why Albania hated the USSR?
