Consistency is a skill you develop to be able to quickly and effectively create figures with appropriate proportions, perspective, composition, and coloring. It's not copy-pasting the same exact poorly drawn caricature over and over.

Newspaper cartoonists, which Dobson seems to think every artist is, practice a consistent artstyle that allows them to quickly and effortlessly create a new strip every single day, and even by their low-effort standards, copy-pasting whole frames and even entire comics is unthinkable.

Jim Davis didn't copy and paste Garfield every week. He drew a new Garfield every fucking time for each panel because that was his job.

Actually, he has lots of character templates drawn up. Now a days all he does is write a script and someone else puts it together for him.

Y'know, using character templates is hackish, but I can forgive it. Homestar Runner uses character templates and that show is a masterpiece.

But while HR uses templates, every single character looks unique and interesting. Nobody is just a recolor of someone else (except in cases where it works for a gag) and everybody has a different shape, silhouette and face.

Character templates give you the opportunity to put a lot of care and detail into your designs because you'll only ever have to draw them once. But this guy just has one body/face that he uses over and over.

Fuck's sake, you could at least change the nose! It's one of the easiest and dumbest ways to avoid sameface.

For example turning his character around in a series of panels without warping the planes/shapes of him. Which he never fucking does. (The exception to not wanting warping being animation effects where you are purposely warping the shapes- but even those have rules you follow in how you deform that shape and with no consistency you sure as hell aren't getting the character from key frame A to key frame B without colossally fucking up)
