I know Gorby killed the USSR but, I can't bring myself to hate him, the fact that the USSR couldn't survive without massive military pressure surely demonstrates that it was not a good system.

The real tragedy is that the various players allowed the USSR to collapse completely instead of transitioning to a federation.

He was trying to make the USSR better though. He was trying to give people real freedom. Did he do everything right, no, but I think a leader that is principled enough to dilute his own iron grip on power even when the people around him are fighting against it is pretty impressive.
