Let's put it this way: Germany deserves whoever they vote in. It's up to them to save themselves, and if they fail, then their continued existence wasn't meant to be.

The SPD party has fucked up so far and lost many voters in recent years. I guess this change of Face, having Schulz run as their candidate, is to rebrand the SPD party. I don't think they will surpass the CDU party of Merkel though. If anything, this can be a good thing, because if CDU loses some voters, and SPD gets slightly more, they will end up with about 25-30% both, which is about the same amount the AfD party (rightwingers of germany) might end up with coming election, maybe pulling ahead.
