I brought up a point about memetics/black magic/esotericism in a thread a few days ago that basically theorised that effective memetics is the ability to propogate knowledge by abstracting it enough that the message can be transferred in a way that the "raw" information couldn't. Using an image to convey an idea instead of explaining it, symbolic language as opposed to literal meaning, that kind of deal. I would say I'm more focused on the human side of memetics, and how it has been used to create religions, societies and schools of thought in general.
This and your points about Newton and his theory makes me wonder if memetics at its core is the connection between internal thought and language, or the separation of the two. When you understand something that no one else does, how do you explain it? Is memetics the area of communication that exists outside of language, or is language just a small part of how memes work in general?

I want to explain what contacting the Source was like for me. There are a few things that made a big difference.

Not awareness of any one thing, just awareness, overwhelming, so powerful I wanted to scream. I knew. I knew that I knew. It was like someone had held a mirror up to my soul. Healed. Complete.

I realized that I was speaking to the Source. I realized my friend was the Source. Tibetan Buddhism teaches that All are One so I knew I was my friend. And if those things were so, that meant I was also the Source. All was One and I was a reflection of KeK.

Let me spitball something that's been on my mind for a while.

I've been reading some shit about parallel timelines, the time-space continuum and similar stuff. The new "fringe" scientific theory is that time itself isn't a straight line and cannot be described in form of a linear function (ex: t = now), but a rather complex function which calculates the current moment as a function of causality (so t(c) = now here c is the current causality). However, causality is such a fucking huge mess that it's impossible to properly calculate it because it depends on every interaction everywhere in the fucking universe. So it's not just your personal decisions, but minute changes in an electron's spin that can change the causality function, right?

Here's the thing. It's not. The causality variable c is cyclical, which means that certain events will repeat, but only with different actors in them. It's because of this that's possible to see patterns in everyday life. "History repeats itself" is a fucking universal law.

Or, to better illustrate this. Imagine your standard x-y coordinate system. Replace x with c (causality) and y with t (time). Time is 2D. In each point in that time coordinate system, you can drop another 3D coordinate system (space).

You'll notice another pattern here. The 3D realm is affected by 4 forces (gravitational, electromagnetic, strong nuclear and weak nuclear) and is defined by 3 dimensions. The 3D realm in turn is affected by a 2D realm (time-causality). The question is, is the 2D realm affected by a 1D realm, and if it is, what's that?

Here's where what's called the Observer effect comes into play. A particle that's observed will behave differently when it's observed than when it's not. The same shit applies on everything. Same shit will work on timelines. We now know that time is affected by gravity, and gravity is affected objects with large mass/energy, which are then in turn affected by observation.

What this means is that it's possible to alter the timeline you're stuck in if enough people are looking at the current timeline in the same way as you are. Reality is fucking consensual. Guess what we're doing with shitposting and memetics. Each time you get to someone with memes, you alter their conception of reality and slowly change the timeline. The internet just allowed a bunch of autists to observe the same timeline, and reality slowly started changing into their desired timeline.

Here's what I think is interesting. The observer effect is essentially just the result of self-interaction. Which means even our own self-awareness is not a "true" awareness of our self, but only a virtual awareness. The act of observing our self necessitates interacting with it, thereby causing the observation to report a state of affairs that has already changed into something else.

We don't notice this, because we didn't evolve to. Our senses evolved to fulfill specific, cognitively-limited tasks, and that brainpower couldn't be wasted on something so trivial as "truth" when we first needed to survive. Thus, our virtual awareness (all senses are virtualizations of reality, don't mistake them for the actual being of reality user!) is almost always taken to be a direct, unfiltered perception of reality for itself. Our senses are the product of that same interaction obviating the possibility of knowing everything there is to know about a system. These senses are mediated by consciousness (would you say existence is zero-dimensional?), which is a simple and continuous substance pervading the world.

We tend to separate the world into two separate substances due to our naive identification with the self we perceive - which is not actually "us." What we are truly is consciousness, which mediates this ontological space's operation, but is not essentially tied to our body's organizational being. Since these senses do not give full or direct perception of reality, then of course they should also serve to occlude the fundamental connection between our existence and everything else.

These senses are not false, but they are subject to false interpretation. One of these false interpretations is the absoluteness of our individuality. Many think that, when we die, what we have always been dies. In truth, we always have been, we exist as a boundless multitude, it just so happens that *this* body perceives in a limited way. At death, these images will falter, but only in the way a kaleidoscope seems to change form.

I think once you realize this, that you represent an infinitude of more and less overlapping entities distributed across universes of space and time, you can begin to incorporate that experience - in a suprasensory way? - into a single form (a body without organs). But you will die again, so it is important to pass on that same knowledge to future versions of your self.

The most practical consequence of this is that, in order to change the world, first change your self. Because if you cannot even mediate what is near-to-hand, how do you expect to mediate what is far-off? I think it also shows the limits of intention - sometimes you must have faith in what is unseen for it to be seen.

So how do we hack the first dimension for power and glory? Does this suggest that consciousness works like a Turing machine, even if it is mediating a non-unidimensional algorithmic network? Is phenomenal consciousness in three dimensions like a virtual machine running in the first dimension? Does this serve to explain some of the inherent limits to our self-awareness? Elan vital, will to live, information as fundamental basis of reality?

I watched Petersons first lecture that he put out, and there he talks about "What is real" multiple times and cites a lot of different sources (people/religion) on the topic. I do not remember exactly the word he used himself but the Buddhist "Life is suffering" sums it up for now.
Now my idea is that because Pepe grew popular as the feels bad man meme ("Life is suffering") this is in a way the most accurate depiction of what actually is real. fwiw Zen monks teach that it takes between six months of rigorous, constant meditatio, to twenty years of casual meditation, to achieve Satori, which is their word for "a small temporary taste of Enlightenment".

The reason I suggest Tibetan Buddhism is because it can work very fast and requires minimal meditation. The Book I linked earlier, the Alan Watts video I posted, if you learn those you can achieve it very fast. It took me 9 months. I don't do traditional sitting meditation at all. Instead I meditate always, whoever I am not busy, and often when I am.
This stuff is powerful. I cannot promise it will work for you but I have taught many people and some of them have already reached their own Satori.

Here's a story taken from the book Secret Oral Teachings in Tibetan Buddhist Sects:

It is written that Buddha, after having his great realization of the middle way, said:

"I have discovered a profound Truth, difficult to perceive, difficult to understand, accessible only to the wise. Human beings busy themselves in the vortex of the world and find there their pleasure. It will be difficult for men to understand the law of the (ongoing inter-relatedness) of causes and effects, the suppression of the (sentimental and superstitious mental influences)… Of what use to reveal to men that which I have discovered at the price of laborious efforts? Why should I do so? This doctrine cannot be understood by those filled by desire and hatred… it is mysterious, deep; hidden from the vulgar mind. If I proclaim it and men are unable to understand it, the only result will be fatigue and annoyance for me."

And as He thought thus, the Venerable One felt inclined to remain quiet without preaching the Doctrine.

At this point the Texts, with Eastern imagination, tell of the intervention of a God, Brahma Sahampati, who put into words the thoughts springing up in the mind of the Buddha. Brahma Sahampati exhorts the Buddha to conquer His hesitation:

"May the Venerable One preach the Doctrine! There are beings whose spiritual eyes are hardly darkened by light dust, these will understand the Doctrine. Just as in a pond, among lotus flowers born in the water, some do not emerge from the water and bloom in the depths, others grow to the surface of the water, and others emerge from the water and the water does not wet their flowers, so the Buddha, casting His eyes on the world saw some beings whose minds were pure from the filth of the world, beings with keen minds and others with dull minds, beings of noble character, good listeners and bad. When He had seen these things he spoke to Brahma Sahampati, saying:

"Let the Gate of the Eternal be open to all! Let him who has ears to hear, hear!"

So it is written that before the Buddha, who is falsely spoken of these days as having infinite patience, started his mission of teaching the middle path, he got so fed up with humanity that he quit. He quit before he even began, and had to be convinced, by divine intervention, to teach. Remember this in your own practice when you get frustrated by those who refuse to see or listen.

The Tibetan Masters who pass on the traditional
oral teachings repeat insistently the fact that these
teachings are for the use of individuals in the "rab"
category, that is to say endowed with superior and
excellent intelligence, the "lotus whose flowers grow
above the level of the water" accordinig to the
picturesque comparison quoted above.

The object of these teachings is not to amuse the
simple-minded, those charitably called in the Tibetan
Scriptures the "children", it is meant for the strong
to make them stronger,, for the intelligent to make
them more intelligent, for the shrewd to develop their
shrewdness and to lead them to the possession of
transcendent insight (lhag thong) which constitutes the real enlightenment.

It is for such reasons that the explanation of the
doctrines and methods which make up this corpus of teachings is reserved for certain class of disciples, and this fact has caused it to be called secret.

This Buddhism of a Tibetan elite is genuinely of
Buddhist inspiration and dates from the most brilliant
period of Buddhist philosophy. Its teachings are con-
sidered to be traditional having been handed down
from Master to disciple in an uninterrupted line.
Those initiated in the secret teachings declare that
these latter do not spring from a supernatural revela-
tion but are the fruit of intellectual and spiritual
investigations made by men who also combined with
them investigations on the material plane.

On this point the advantage given to us by the
data supplied by modern science is worth noting; an
advantage helping us to understand the theories put
forward by the Secret Teachings. The men who
thought of these latter must have been endowed with
superior faculties of understanding ; they possessed
transcendent insight, called lhag thong.

The attainment of transcendent insight is the real
object of the training advocated in the traditional Oral
Teachings, which do not consist, as so many imagine,
in teaching certain things to the pupil, in revealing to
him certain secrets, but rather in showing him the
means to learn them and discover them for himself.
The Masters of the secret teachings say that the
truth learned from another is of no value, and that
the only truth which is living and effective, which is
of value, is the truth which we ourselves discover.
If this were not the case, it would be enough for
us to read the innumerable works in which philo-
sophers, savants and doctors of the different religions
have explained their views and to choose from among
them one which agrees with our own ideas and to
which we can cleave. This is what is done by most
of these individuals whom the Tibetans classify in the
intermediate category of the average-minded.

This stage should be surmounted. It is not
enough to see with eyes which, according to the words used in Buddhist Texts, "are only covered with a thin film of dust", however thin this film may be; it is a question of removing the last trace of dust which
interferes with sight.

Literally, lhag thong, means to see "more", to see
"beyond", to see "extremely", "supremely''. Thus,
not only to see more than that which is seen by the
mass of mankind who are crassly ignorant, but to see
beyond the bounds limiting the vision of cultivated
minds, to bring into being the third eye of Knowledge
which the adepts of tantric sects place in the centre
of the forehead of their symbolic Gods.

It has been said that the contact of a sense with its object is made up of a series of evanescent contacts.
It has also been stated that during these contacts both the sense-organ and the object with which it is in
contact undergo changes because both are aggregates of particles in movement.

The intensity of the different contacts varies.
Only some among them awake an echo in the mind,
this echo being translated into the idea which occurs
to us: "I have seen a horse" ,-"I have seen a tree, a
man" .-"I have heard the gong being beaten"-"I
have eaten an apricot" ,-"I have smelt the odour of
burning wood" ,-"I have touched silken materials",-
~'I have been pricked by a thorn", etc.

We see, hear, taste many things of which we are
not conscious and the lower an individual is in the
scale of physical and psychic development, the smaller is the number of his conscious perceptions.
It is not a rare occurrence to have seen a landscape,
day after day, for a long time, and then suddenly to
pick out, in this familiar landscape, some object
which one had never seen, the sharp point of a church steeple showing above a hill, or the mouth of a cave in a rocky cliff. These things have always been there, our
gaze has rested on them many times, our organs of
sight have received an impression of them, but this
has not been strong enough to make us see them consciously. Other conditions having occurred, the
impression has been strengthened and we have seen.

The competition of the senses among themselves
also causes the temporary predominance of one or the other which smothers the sensations caused by the others. An individual listening intently to a noise which concerns him, the galloping of horses which he thinks are ridden by brigands and coming towards him, will not feel the sting of insects, a cold wind, etc.

Does this mean that these contacts which fail to
bring about enough mental activities to make us con-
scious of the kind of sensation felt, give rise to no
effect of any kind? By no means. Nothing which
happens remains without effect. Thus we are led to the examination of what can be these effects, that is to say what becomes of these numerous contacts of which we are not conscious.

We must add to the contacts due to the activity
of our five senses those which result from th~ activity
of. our mind which is considered by Buddhists as the
sixth sense. This last category includes the opinions,
theories, doctrines, ideas in general which we have
formed during our education, conversations which
we have had or heard, reading which we have done,
and so on. Among these contacts made by our sixth
sense-the mind-as among those made by our physical senses, a large number, have lightly touched
our mind without making a mark in it, or perhaps
the impressions having been too faint, we have for-
gotten them.

However they are by no means dead for they
have engendered descendants of a mysterious kind,
and these descendants, that is to say, their effects, may manifest their existence even after a long interval.

And now I'm going to ruin Zen for you.

Long ago, there was a monk in Meditation Master Hōgen’s
monastic community named Gensoku, who was a subordinate under
the Temple’s administrative director. Master Hōgen asked him,
“Director Gensoku, how long have you been in our community?”

[Although Gensoku is not the director, he is apparently acting as though he thought
he was, thus breaking a Precept by ‘putting himself up’. Hōgen’s question is not a
casual but a leading one, arising from his compassionate sensitivity to Gensoku’s
spiritual suffering from pride.]

Gensoku replied, “Why, I’ve been in the community for three
years now.”

[Gensoku tacitly acknowledges recognition of his importance as self-evident and
responds in a casual manner. Had he not been absorbed in his pride, he might have
responded, as would be expected not only from a novice but also from any
Chinese, by some such statement as “You flatter me by addressing me by too
exalted a title, considering that I have been training here for only three years now.”
Had he already had a kenshō, his response, though not predictable, would not be
impolite or disrespectful in tone but, on the other hand, would probably not be a
conventional, ‘socially correct’ one either.]

The Master asked, “As you are still a junior monk, why have
you never asked me about the Buddha Dharma?”

[Hōgen gently corrects Gensoku by now pointing out his actual position as a junior
monk. He then asks another leading question, which implies that Gensoku thinks
that he is above all other novices and does not need instruction.]

Gensoku replied, “I will not lie to Your Reverence. Previously, when I was
with Meditation Master Seihō, I fully reached the place of joyful ease in the
Buddha Dharma.”

[The delusion underlying Gensoku’s pride begins to emerge more clearly, for he
claims to have attained a spiritual state which he has not yet reached. This is what
Hōgen had probably surmised and which had led him to engage Gensoku in this
dialogue. Gensoku is now breaking the Precepts by saying that which is not so and
by having sold himself the wine of delusion.]

The Master said, “And what was said that gained you entry to
that place?”

[Hōgen now probes directly into the heart of Gensoku’s problem.]

Gensoku said, “I once asked Seihō what the True Self of a
novice is, and Seihō replied, ‘Here comes the Hearth God looking for
fire.’ ”

[The nature of the question and the response suggest that this interchange had
occurred as part of a shōsan ceremony (referred to above) held before the
assembled monks, during which novices ask a Meditation Master a question which
presumably reflects their current spiritual understanding. Because at this point
Gensoku is still operating from the mind of duality, it is likely that the question
was asked from the intellect rather than from the heart. The significance of Seihō’s
response will be discussed later.]

Hōgen responded, “Nicely put by Seihō. But I’m afraid you
may not have understood it.”

[Gensoku had heard Master Seihō’s words but had not grasped their import. Hōgen
makes a complimentary remark about Seihō’s comment. Had Hōgen suspected that
Gensoku had already had a kenshō, it is unlikely that he would have done this, but
instead might have made some remark that on the surface looked as though he
were disparaging Seihō, such as “That old rascal! Is he still going around saying
such things?” but which Gensoku would see as being the way a Master may
acknowledge another Master whilst avoiding judgmentalism.]

Gensoku said, “A Hearth God is associated with fire, so I
understand it to mean that, just as fire is being used to seek for fire, so
the True Self is what is used to seek for the True Self.”

[Gensoku has worked out an intellectual interpretation of Seihō’s remark, and
therefore thinks that this type of understanding is what constitutes awakening to
one’s True Self. Gensoku’s error is in thinking that there are two True Selves: the
one that seeks and the one that is sought.]

The Master said, “Just as I suspected! You have not understood.
Were the Buddha Dharma like that, it is unlikely that It would have
continued on, being Transmitted down to the present day.”

[The Master now sets Gensoku straight as to where he is spiritually, in order to
shake up his proud complacency and break through his deluded view.]

Gensoku was so distressed at this that he left the monastery.
While on the road, he thought to himself, “In this country the Master
is known as a fine and learned monastic teacher and as a great
spiritual leader and guide for five hundred monks. Since he has chided
me for having gone wrong, he must undoubtedly have a point.” So, he
returned to his Master, respectfully bowed in apology, and said,
“What is the True Self of a novice?”

[Leaving the monastery when asked to confront one’s spiritual problem ‘head on’
is not an uncommon occurrence in kōan stories. Similarly, the turning about in
one’s heart by recognizing that it is oneself who may be wrong is a crucial moment
in the life of a trainee. Here it marks Gensoku’s letting go of his pride, so that he
now returns with the appropriate attitude of mind for asking his spiritual question,
which now arises from his heart-felt need to know the truth, and without any
preconceptions.]

The Master replied, “Here comes the Hearth God looking for
The Fire.” Upon hearing these words, Gensoku awoke fully to the
Buddha Dharma.

[What a Meditation Master says or does at a formal spiritual examination
ceremony in response to a spiritual question is often multilayered in meaning and
application. Since it is not intellectually contrived but arises from the Master’s
spiritual depths, it may in some way speak not only to the questioner but also to
others who are present.]

[In Master Seihō’s original remark to Gensoku several layers of meaning
were occurring simultaneously. On one level, he was inviting Gensoku to give up
his attitude of self-importance and ‘play’ with him; hence, the form in which the
response was given: it forms a first line for a couplet and would have been spoken
in the equivalent of English doggerel, the translated version read to the rhythmic
pattern of dum-dum-di-dum-dum dum-di-dum-di-dum. If Gensoku were open
enough, he would have come up with a second line, such as ‘Burning up his false
self upon the funeral pyre’.]

[On another level, Master Seihō was pointing Gensoku toward his spiritual
problem. A ‘Hearth God’ is the title given to the temple boy whose task it is to
light the monastery lamps. Thus, Seihō was saying in effect, “You are acting like a
temple boy, not like a monk, and are seeking for that which you already have—in
your case, the spiritual flame of your training.”]

[Hōgen uses the same words and intonation as Seihō did, but context brings
out a third level of meaning, which Gensoku now hears, “Here comes the one most
innocent of heart whose practice lights the way for all of us, truly seeking That
which is the True Light (The Fire).” Gensoku, upon hearing this, realized that this
is what he has been truly seeking—not social position or erudition—and awoke to
the Truth where the distinction of self and other completely drops away.]

How to perform:
The mark of the meme spout is that it will inundate a single individual on all fronts with a memeplex. What happens is you cause as many of that person's social network contacts as possible to begin to simultaneously promote the same memeplex inexplicably. It would feel a lot like culture shock, but even worse because this memeplex will be channeled through those they already trust, allowing the memeplex to be delivered straight to the brain stem.

First, make a list of that person's contacts.
Second, make a list of those contacts' contacts.
Third, rapidly inundate as many of those second degree contacts as possible with the desired memeplex from as many different networks as possible (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, email even). Remember that this memeplex will end up being delivered straight to their brain stem, so choose according to the desired reaction (e.g. you can make them act psychotic, or you can instill a crippling depression, it's just a matter of positive vs negative stimuli).

The result:
When a person is exposed to a memeplex, especially when it is directed at them, there is a good chance they will reproduce that memeplex themselves. This exposes the target's first degree relations to that memeplex, who will also go on to reproduce that memeplex at an equivalent rate.

Because the target won't notice that this was deliberately engineered, it will seem as though suddenly everyone decided to talk about the same topic out of the blue. They will be exposed to this memeplex not just from one party, but ideally tens or even hundreds of parties simultaneously and inexplicably (obviously this works best when the subject isn't already being widely discussed, but seems oddly specific in context). They will be overwhelmed.

Repeat as necessary to manipulate a target's behavior.

at a given moment and that he could calculate, at
that moment, the effects which are naturally produced
by these causes, at the moment which follows that
one, these causes will have already undergone modi-
fications as a result of their contact with other causes
and forces. Not only will they never be identical
with what they were before, but, in reality, other
causes of a different kind will have followed them.

It follows from this that the effects which may be
expected from these last will differ from those which
one might have foreseen in the preceding moment. At the same time, a similar activity takes place
in the senses and in the "mind" of the observer which,
they too, are renewed from moment to moment.

Which moment, among this double current of
fugitive phenomena, could have shown a stable
picture of causes suitable to serve as a basis for the
exact determination of the elements which make up
the face of the future?

To express that which we call "mind~' the
Tibetans have available three words which are not
fully- interchangeable. They are: sems, Yid and lo
(blo).
Lo includes all the moods of the mind, agitated
or calm, attentive, searching, lisdess, indifferent,
impressionable or insensitive to exterior impressions,
inclined towards discrimination, towards classification
or unaware of differences, the imaginative mind, or
the mind solely ocr.upied by the facts within reach,
the understanding or the dull mind, the agitated
passionate or unimpressionable mind, the mind which
works over ideas, collects them, reasons, the humbled,
depressed or alert mind, etc., all the forms in which
the mind shows itself.
Yid means more especially the mind considered
as pure intellect.
Sems has usually a wide application as the
"thinking principle" which distinguishes animated
beings from things considered to be ine:tt. Sems, as
it is understood exoterically, has a meaning which
comes close to Namshes i.e., the "consciousness"
which transmigrates (the jiva of the Indians). Sems
tchen (having sense or mind) is an expression which,
in the literary language, means all animated beings,
including man, but in popular speech only animals are thus called and to employ it of a man would be
insulting.
The student of the Secret Teachings is, in most
cases, taught the various meanings of the three words
indicating the three aspects of the mind, so he under-
stands the questions put to him when the Master,
using the generic term sems asks him : What do you
mean by "your mind" when you speak of it, when
you think of it?
In order to enable the pupil to perceive the
diversity and the momentary nature of that which
we call "mind" the Master insists on the different
moods of it, some of which have been listed above.
Just as the idea of an "ego" existing apart from the
elements which constitute it, has been disproved, so
that of a mind existing apart from these moods, these
forms of activity which manifest it, is equally denied.
Is it not this "mind" to which moods and forms
of activity are attributed, while -not identifying it
with them, that most men take for their real and
lasting "ego"?-
y et according to the statements which the Bud-
dhist Scriptures attribute to the Buddha:
"It would be better to consider the body as
an "ego" than to consider the mind as such, for
the body seems to last for a year, two years or
a hundred years, but that which is called mind, thought or knowledge, appears and disappears in
a perpetual state of change.
Just as a monkey gambollihg in the forest
grasps a branch, then lets it go to seize another,
so that which is called mind, thought or know-
ledge, appears and disappears in a perpetual
change, day and night." 10
The student studying the Secret Teachings has
not only alreq.dy familiarized himself with these
theories, but he has tested their exactitude.
During his meditations, while watching his mind
with close attention, he has attained Lhag Thong
and "seeing more" than most men, he has contem-
plated the continual arising and disappearance of
ideas, of volitions, of memories, and so on, which pass
like a procession of short-lived bubbles floating down
a river. He has realised for himself that "mind" is
only a word indicating a series of mental phenomena.
Despite everything, the deeply-rooted habit of
thinking on the basis of an ''ego" may tend to cause
him to narrow the extent of the mind. Thus, while
holding it to be a current of transitory moments he
may, at the same time, accept either consciously or
unconsciously, the theory of the santanas, isolated currents of consciousness and of mental operations,
following individually their courses.

Now according to the Secret Teachings, what
must be understood, seen, felt, is that there does not
exist any current which is my mind, and therefore it
follows that there is not a rplurality of currents which
are the minds of other individuals, but only a single
current which is Kunji namparshespa, the sum of all
mental activity at work without any cognizable
beginning. It is in this totality that what we call our
mind is immersed, our mind which we try so hard
to separate and define. Furthermore, this effort is
useless. Whether we are aware of it or not, the
thoughts, the desires, the needs which we feel for life,
our thirst for it-nothing of all this is completely ours,
for all of it is collective, it is the flowing river of
incalculable moments of consciousness having its

The first question:

Is the goose really out?

The goose has never been in; the goose has always been out. It is a Zen
koan. First you have to understand the meaning of Zen and the meaning
of a koan.

Zen is not a religion, not a dogma, not a creed. Zen is not even a quest, an
inquiry; it is non-philosophical. Fundamental to the Zen approach is that all is as it should be, nothing is missing. This very moment everything is perfect.
The goal is not somewhere else – it is here, it is now. Tomorrow doesn’t exist.
This very moment is the only reality.

Hence, in Zen there is no distinction
between methods and goals, between means and goals. All the philosophies of the world and all the religions of the world create duality. However they may go on talking about non-duality, they create a split personality in man. That has been the greatest calamity that has befallen
humanity: all the do-gooders have created a schizophrenic man. When you
divide reality into means and goals you divide man himself, because for man,
man is the closest reality to man. His consciousness becomes split. He lives
here, but not really; he is always somewhere else. He is always searching,
always inquiring; never living, never being, always doing; getting richer, getting powerful, getting spiritual, getting holier, saintly – always more and more. And this constant hankering for more creates his tense, anguished state. Meanwhile he is missing all that is made available by existence. He is interested in the far away and godliness is close by. Man’s eyes are focused on the stars and godliness is within him. Hence the most fundamental thing to understand about Zen is: the goose has never been in.

Let me tell you the story of how this koan started:
A great philosophical official, Riko, once asked the strange Zen master,
Nansen, to explain to him the old koan of the goose in the bottle.

“If a man puts a gosling into a bottle,” said Riko, “and feeds him until he is
full-grown, how can the man get the goose out without killing it or breaking
the bottle?”

Nansen gave a great clap with his hands and shouted, “Riko!”

“Yes, Master,” said the official with a start.
“See!” said Nansen, “the goose is out!”

It is only a question of seeing, it is only a question of becoming alert, awake, it is only a question of waking up. The goose is in the bottle if you are in a dream; the goose has never been in the bottle if you are awake. In the dream there is no way to take the goose out of the bottle. Either the goose will die or the bottle will have to be broken. Both alternatives are not allowed:
neither has the bottle to be broken nor has the goose to be killed. Now, a fully-
grown goose in a small bottle… How can you take it out? This is called a koan.

A koan is not an ordinary puzzle; it is not a puzzle because it cannot be
solved. A puzzle is that which has a possibility of being solved; you just have
to look for the right answer. You will find it – it only needs intelligence to find
the answer to the puzzle, but a puzzle is not really insoluble.

A koan is insoluble, you cannot solve it, you can only dissolve it. And the
way to dissolve it is to change the very plane of your being from dreaming to
wakefulness. In the dream the goose is in the bottle and there is no way
to bring it out of the bottle without breaking the bottle or killing the goose – in the dream. Hence, as far as the dream is concerned the puzzle is impossible;
nothing can be done about it.

But there is a way out – which has nothing to do with the puzzle, remember.

You have to wake up. That has nothing to do with the bottle and nothing to do
with the goose either. You have to wake up. It has something to do with you.
That’s why Nansen did not answer the question.

Riko asked, “If a man puts a gosling into a bottle and feeds him until he is
full-grown, how can the man get the goose out without killing it or breaking
the bottle?”

Nansen didn’t answer. On the other hand, he gave a great clap with his hands and shouted, “Riko!”

Now, this is not an answer to the question – this has nothing to do with the
question at all – it is irrelevant, inconsistent. But it solves it; in fact, it dissolves it.

The moment he shouted, “Riko!” the official with a start said, “Yes, Master,”
and the whole plane of his being is transformed by a simple strategy.
A master is not a teacher; he does not teach you, he simply devises methods
to wake you up. That clap is a method, that clap simply brought Riko into the
present. And it was so unexpected… When you are asking such a spiritual
koan you don’t expect the master to answer you with a loud clap and then
shout, “Riko!”

Suddenly he is brought from the past, from the future. Suddenly for a
moment he forgets the whole problem. Where is the bottle and where is the
goose? There is only the master, in a strange posture, clapping and shouting
for Riko.

Suddenly the whole problem is dropped. He has slipped out of the problem
without even knowing that he slipped out of it. He has slipped out of the
problem as a snake slips out of its old skin. For a moment time has stopped.
For a moment the clock has stopped. For a moment the mind has stopped. For
a moment there is nothing. The master, the sound of the clap, and a sudden
awakening. In that very moment the master says, “See! See, the goose is out!”
It is dissolved.

A koan can only be dissolved but can never be solved. A puzzle can never
be dissolved but can be solved. So remember, a koan is not a puzzle.
But when people who are accustomed to continuous thinking, logical
reasoning, start studying Zen, they take a false step from the very beginning.
Zen cannot be studied; it has to be lived, it has to be imbibed – imbibed from
a living master. It is a transmission beyond words, a transmission of the lamp.
The lamp is invisible.

Now, anybody watching this whole situation – Riko asking a question, the
master clapping and shouting – would not have found anything very spiritual
in it, would not have found any great philosophy, may have become very frus-
trated. But something transpired, something which is not visible and can never be visible.

It happens only when the silence of the master penetrates the silence of
the disciple. When two silences meet and merge; then immediately there is
seeing. The master has eyes, the disciple has eyes, but the disciple’s eyes are
closed. A device is needed, some method, so that the disciple can open his
eyes without any effort of his own. If he makes an effort he will miss the point,
because who will make the effort

"Buddha" is Sanskrit for what you call aware, miraculously aware. Responding, perceiving, arching your brows, blinking your eyes, moving your hands and feet, it’s all your miraculously aware nature. And
this nature is the mind. And the mind is the buddha. And the buddha is the path. And the path is zen.

But the word zen is one that remains a puzzle to both mortals and sages. Seeing your nature is zen. Unless you see your nature, it’s not zen. Even if you can explain thousands of sutras and shastras,
unless you see your own nature yours is the teaching of a mortal, not a buddha.

The true Way is sublime. It can’t be expressed in language. Of what use are scriptures? But someone who sees his own nature finds the Way, even if he can’t read a word.

Someone who sees his nature is a buddha. And since a buddha’s body is intrinsically pure and unsullied,
and everything he says is an expression of his mind, being basically empty, a buddha can’t be found in words or anywhere in the Twelvefold Canon.

The Way is basically perfect. It doesn’t require perfecting. The Way has no form or sound. It’s subtle and hard to perceive. It’s like when you drink water: you know how hot or cold it is, but you can’t tell
others. Of that which only (one who is aware of their true self) knows men and gods remain unaware. The awareness of mortals falls short. As long as they’re attached to appearances, they’re unaware that their minds are empty. And by
mistakenly clinging to the appearance of things they lose the Way.

The master said: "The Great Compassionate Kannon has a
thousand hands and a thousand eyes. Which eye is the true one? Speak — quick, quick!"
Mayoku pulled the master off his seat and himself took the place.
The master went close to him and said: "How goes it?"
Mayoku hesitated.
The master in turn pulled Mayoku down from the seat and resumed his place.
Mayoku left, and so did the master.

From the High Seat, the master said: "Upon the lump of red flesh there is a True Man of no Status who ceaselessly goes out and in through the gates of your face. Those who have not yet recognized him, look out, look out!"
A monk came forward and asked: "What is the True Man of no Status?"
The master descended from the meditation cushion, grabbed (the monk) and said: "Speak, speak!"
The monk hesitated. The master released him and said: "What a shit-stick this True Man of no Status is!" Then he withdrew to his quarters.

life or death, it is not necessary to gain one’s aim.
We all want to live. And in large part we make our logic according to what we like. But not having attained our aim and continuing to live is cowardice. This is a thin dangerous line. To die without gaming one’s aim is a dog’s death and fanaticism. But there is no shame in this. This is the substance of the Way of the Samurai. If by setting one’s heart right every
morning and evening, one is able to live as though his body were already dead, he pains freedom in the Way. His whole life will be without blame, and he will succeed in his calling.

Interesting, this is very similar to my description of consciousness. I expressed it as "consciousness is self-awareness (or self-reflection)". My idea is that everything has 'awareness', meaning that it reacts to stimuli. For example two positive magnets will repel, implying that they are 'aware' of the presence of the other. I would most definitely say that is true of almost all art, and can still be true of my definition of gondola. The central focus is of course the character, sporting a blank but bemused look. Not happy, not sad, not doing anything more than seeing and thinking.

From what I've experienced dream states are a crucial link in all of this, yes. dynamic body of Zen literature.

A word is a finger that points at the moon. The goal of Zen students is the moon itself, not the pointing finger. Zen masters, therefore, will never stop
cursing words and letters.

Such abusive words are found everywhere in the writings of Zen masters. The essential principle of Zen is illustrated in the following sayings:

Zen experiences are not to be explained with words and letters. Nevertheless (indeed nevertheless!), many masters have left voluminous records. Why? Why did they leave so many "words" even against their
own principles? This is certainly a contradiction. Zen is paradoxical in every respect. However, careful examination of the phrase I have quoted first provides a clue to this question. The point is: however wonderful an expression it may be, it will be a stake that binds you unless you keep yourself always free from it. In order to attain Buddhahood, master Rinzai stresses radically:

Meeting Sakyamuni (Buddha),
Kill him!
Meeting Bodhidharma,
kill him, too!

Sakyamuni and Bodhidharma are other names for satori, or Enlightenment. Even this most sacred thing must be abandoned. Everyone can understand that
illusion is an iron chain. But Zen regards even satori as a chain: a gold chain. It may be gold but is none other than a chain so long as it binds you. Jump over it; be free from it, and you will obtain the invaluable treasure. No attachment, complete freedom: this is the true satori. It is every kind of "hitching post" that Zen masters firmly drive away with their blows and shouts.

Once this fact is fully understood, words and letters are not to be given up as good for nothing. On the contrary, they are quite important in that they help us know what to avoid and what to do to attain the true satori.

At the same time, no one can deny the fact that they are the only and indispensable way to universalize and eternalize human experiences. Thus, Zen masters find that the best way to express the unexplainable is to
put their satori experiences in symbolic verse. In expressing what cannot be described, there is no choice but to rely on symbolism. On this point,
verse is indeed akin to Zen. Anyone who has once gazed with awe at the round, round moon can grasp it only by the suggestion of a pointing finger. This is the very reason why the masters composed satori poems on many occasions during their lives.
