ll, it was one of the shows that at the time tried to be scary and gross and succeeded, so no problems with that. It's right there with anything of the time.

"Grim and Evil" came first, but Billy and Mandy as a stand-alone show came after Zim, and the longer Zim ran, the more Billy and Mandy's humor changed to become more obnoxious and loud.

Right, so I've heard a lot of people really like this show. What about it is so good?

the atmosphere, the art style, the music, the dark tone, some of the humor when it's not simply GIR being "so randumb"

A few things:
The artstyle is completely unique. I've never seen another show construct characters like this show did and it worked.
The humor is as dark as you can get on Nick, or completely nuts and silly.
The tone is utterly cynical, which is worlds away from other Nick shows at the time.
Every shot looks great, in a dirty indie comic book kind of way.

The fact that the fairy show premiered the same day as Zim and is SILL GOING makes me a little relieved the show got cancelled before it jumped the shark. Which based on the leaked scripts it may have. Skoodge moving into Zim's place and Minimoose are two indications of that.

Maxwell Atoms did a special called Underfist starring Jeff, Skarr, Hoss and Irwin that could have led to a spin-off series but didn't.

To be fair, underfist was shit. The drawing style felt weird compared to Billy and Mandy itself, it tried too hard, like later appearances of Hector Con Carne, where the brain and the bear just looked weird. I guess once they dropped the more simple style, they fucked up.

ell, to be fair, through the thread people insist Fairly Odd Parents continue to this day, when they had a 1 year break. That was enough to fuck up everything since the changed the whole team. not like the latest seasons weren't running out of idea, though.

Oh wow, how did I ever like Gir as a kid.

He's got his moments, but they depend on him actually interacting with other characters instead of screeching like a retard. Battle of the Planets is the one I think he's the best in, but that's also a 10/10 episode overall.

I always found Gir annoying and although I found him cool in some episodes it made me mad that 80% of the times Zim fails his plans because of him. As a kid I always wondered why the fuck he didn't just replace the damn thing with a competent one, although I think he did in one episode.

Gir was deliberately written to be as insufferable and annoying as possible. Partly as a parody of typical "mascot" bullshit, and partly to antagonize what he though would be his audience.
Naturally, his audience of teenagers, who lack standards and sense, ended up loving him.

well, given his work so far, I wouldn't blame him. His 2 biggest works , IZ and JTHM, created or helped foster either complete edgelords, lolsorandumb teens or some inbetween of those 2. JTHM even has Jhonen fighting against his fans at some point because , in his eyes, the people who sent him letters were hillbilles, self-centered asses and insufferable goths. The only other time I've seen anyone shit on their fans like that was with DSP.

You got a point there. But my point remains. Jhonen created not one , but 2 IPs that are to him what Creep is to Tom Yorke. And I've never seen Jhonen draw anything different from what you see in either of those 2, so I assume he _can't_ do something radically different to distance himself from those IPs. I can understand self-loathing under those conditions.

I'm rewatching the show in order and so far G&E and "season 1" aren't cutting it for me, when does it get to wacky AHTF-esque humor of doing random shit.

When you notice a change in the drawing style, a little more stylized. The first seasons are pretty weak, when the color is all weird.

Grim Adventures was better. Better porn too.

Makes me hate the spic even more now.

JTHM was what the guy was known for. Why would he have been hired to make a show in the first place if they didn't know about what he had previously done?

Well, that was interesting. What was it?

A weird unfinished animation based off of the leaked audio files for the episodes that never came out, namely Mopiness of Doom, Roboparents Gone Wild and Day of Da Spookies.

Sadly I actually made tons of turnsheets and backgrounds for an old fan-animated Zim project but SoapyWaffles never even asked me for them.

SoapyWaffles has been fucking dead for years now. No signs of life whatsoever.

Well then all's well that ends well.

As the head of the very first Invader Zim Fan Animated team, the only thing we managed to squeeze out after 3 years was a 2-minute short on Newgrounds. I managed the forums and co-managed the team. The ratio of "idea guys" and scriptwriters to animators was a thousand to one. I ended up co-animating the short myself out of frustration. It doesn't look that great but at least it was something. All the full-color turnsheets I made of Gaz, The Tallest, Professor Membrane, the other Invaders, the Skoolkids, as well as the main trio seem like they will just rot on my portable HDD, never to be used, like tears on Bane. A big guy.

To finish my thought I eventually stopped giving a crap about the project when it was apparent it would not help me find a job nor were we going to find enough people to do it FOR FREE to make any episodes on a human timescale. Plus I had college to focus on. I'm not sad though, I met some cool friends on the forums and learned a lot about animating. I heartily scoff at any naive user who thinks he can corral people on Holla Forums into doing his work for him FOR FREE. if someone is good at something, they shouldn't do it without compensation.

If it's any consolation, if you're applying for an animation job, having lots of turn-arounds and backgrounds is great for a portfolio, and a good portfolio is worth its weight in gold.

Agreed, user. Kevin Manthei is a fucking god. 30-40% of my love for the show came from its beyond-incredible music score. I think he also worked on the score for Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2015).
