I've been in the Canadian healthcare system for nearly 20 years; the only Canadians that actually like our healthcare system are the ones that use it to see a GP for the sniffles or medicine or whatever. If you have a chronic condition here, it reveals just how much the system is barely holding itself together. After you get a referral to a specialist from your GP, it's not uncommon to have to wait around 6 months to a year to see a specialist; at times, the wait can sometimes reach 2 years, even in major cities. If you need a diagnostic image scan like an MRI or a CT Scan, you better be ready to wait, because that takes 3 to 6 months (unless you are in a province which has private imaging clinics, then you can get it done in two days). If you're in emergency? Expect the wait time to be around 5 hours at the least, even if you do have an emergency case. For example, there was a point where I had to go to emergency and they thought I might have had a stroke; it took them 4 hours to get me into a CT Scan. At that point, you'd have been disabled forever. Saying that "You'll get bumped up the list if you absolutely need care" is an absolute lie.

I don't know if universal healthcare can be ultimately good or bad depending on how it is done, but one thing is clear to me. The Canadian system is COMPLETELY broken, and I have absolutely no idea why anyone wants a healthcare system that is totally public while things like shitskins, rapefugees, sexually liberated women, and government leeches exist.

I had a double inguinal hernia a few years back (both sides busted, quite literally), very low waiting times of only a few weeks, I got in Hospital the night before, shaved, got knocked out the following morning and woke up to puke bile. All the nurses were very friendly.

The only way people here can get work done is to be middle class or upper class, or to save up and drive to America to do it.

thats scary. my son was born extremely prematurely due to complications. he was born about 4 months early. he spent about 30 days in the NICU, which cost me $20. the insurance company was billed $350,000 and paid something like $100k. a medication he had to recieve to stop these seizures i had to look up i found canadians looking to buy the medication online for 10k+ because their government wont pay for it, i paid $20 for it. my insurance was billed around $50k for it and ended up paying around $6k for it.
i wont give the name of the medication, but its a permanent fix for seizures in infants that can cause mental retardation if you dont get them to stop, or attempt to let the child outgrow it and treat each seizure, which is what canada suggests.
the medicine has to be injected and the insurance also paid for needles, alcohol swabs, syringes, and a sharps container for disposal.

Here's the deal from what I can tell: going in to an American hospital, do you know what each procedure and medicine will cost you? Chances are you, your insurance, and the hospital itself has no idea. The latter two have an inkling, but no established prices, just what they're willing to pay or charge based on how good your insurance is. Insurance agencies will haggle the price down if it's expedient, or allow it to spike it there's profit and ability to pay.

Much like the ballooning cost of college, all the government has done is incentivized hospitals to charge whatever higher amount they want. They still get paid no matter what, either by higher deductibles from you or insurance/government money, why wouldn't they charge more?

Want to gut/fix Obamacare? Figure out what the government has been paying for through Medicare; it's always mentioned as having paid the least. Create a study to provide a standardized price menu, canvas the country, allow for slight variability based on local living expenses. Then once you have it, make it the standard by which insurance agencies have to abide by under Obamacare to qualify. I hate the individual mandate, but use that shit to force incentivize insurance agencies to provide at the accepted price point.

You can still use non-compliant insurance to do your thing, they'll fill a grey market of sorts. Private practice endures, keep bottlenecks to a minimum, but drag that price balloon back to Earth. Use that government money for infrastructure or The Wall.

I'm a Canadian, and I did debt collecting for a little something called the Medical Services Plan premiums for the worse part of 6 years. It's a mandatory health care plan provided by the province (leaf equivalent of a state.) This dumb fucking cunt living in Alberta thinks that healthcare runs the same in the rest of Canada.

Out here, we bill people individually on a monthly basis 75$ for health insurance premiums (that's right, 75$ per person,) and it's only been steadily rising over the past decade. The cut off for that is $42,000 per year net income, so if you're making hundreds of thousands or even millions per year, you don't have to pay more :^) Part of the reason for this is because it is a giant clusterfuck of a bureaucracy where we have assistance plans in place for people, but the government doesn't want to tell people about it. Part of that is because they're dumb, lazy fucks who don't want to do the legwork because they'd much rather sic Collection Agencies on poor working class schmoes for inflated premiums, the other part is that people here are fucking stupid (really fucking stupid,) and the final part is that the healthcare system out here is a bloated monster that only hungers for more as all of our boomers are sticking around an extra 10-20 years thanks to advancements in life-extending medical technologies. This is why, as a previous user noted, the wait times for things like MRI's, CT scans, and so on are months to years to get to. Fuck, I had to wait 2 years to get surgery done on my eye to repair a damaged muscle that gave me a permanent double vision, and that was 12 YEARS AGO. I can't imagine how shit it is now, I barely go to the doctor unless I think my life is in immediate danger. The other issue is, they pay doctors more here, because they look at and aggregate all the premiums as well as the debt outstanding, and give them little raises and bumps based on the theoretical figure they can collect from the sheep in the province.

I had to cold call poor working class people who could barely get by on a month to month basis and tell them that they had to pony up for premiums when half the time they could barely afford enough food to feed themselves. Of course, I'd try to get them onto a premium assistance, but because the government is ass-backwards in sorting these things out, they base your current rate off what you made in the year prior. So say you had a good year of solid work last year and made $40k+ but now you're laid off and employment insurance only pays out %50-60 of what you were making. Healthcare is expensive in the US because of a long series of monopolistic grants and legal exemptions made to the industry by the government (in return for lots of bribes, of course.) Fixing this by layering more government control over the top, like Obamacare did, is insane. The real fix is repealing the laws that caused the damage.
When we socialize the cost of healthcare we transfer wealth from the fit to the unfit, which has the effect of lowering the birthrates of the former, and increasing those of the latter. It is one of the roads to ruin.

I'm drunk you look up the date) required hospitals render service. Nationally, and this is post-ACA, hospitals recover about 60% of claims because of EMTALA, so out of the gate you can basically cut any cost in half before you even start the grueling task of discussing rate tables and how they're impacted by individual risk, full liability, and ancillary compensatory service regulation, which would probably get you down to about the quarter of your actual claim.

Nobody, it costs the hospital less than 100k to perform the service but it has to make a profit. The insurance company wants to pay as little as possible and reduce hospital profit as much as possible. In order to get the insurance to pay 100k, the hospital charges them 350k. The insurance company says "fuck you we're not paying 350k, that's ludicrous! We're only going to pay 100k since we believe that covers your expenses and allows you to make some money". When the government makes healthcare their business, they make your health their business. Yes, the taxes become astronomically high, but there are other concerns too.

Smoking is unhealthy and that burdens the system so smoking must then be discouraged, taxed and ultimately banned.

Being fat is unhealthy so fatty foods like sugars become discouraged, taxed and ultimately banned.

The disabled are a constant drain on the system and will ultimately be euthanized using slippery slope abortion and "robots are people too but we have to give them killswitches" laws.

Not to mention the system becomes over-stretched trying to care for all kinds of niggers. You're more likely to die waiting in line for your treatment or contract a previously contained strain of disease like tuberculosis in the waiting room from one of the New Citizens. I'm a Canadian and our senior citizens living in government run seniors centers often wait 2 weeks in their own shit and piss waiting for clean diapers.
