People will flip their shit because they will have to accept that they are obsolete.
Yes. The current global model runs on exchange of resources in a very complex model that is very easily disturbed if one of the components fails. Imagine for example that the global coffee supply from the coffee belt gets disrupted. It would have global impact on the productivity of the modern society. This goes for any resource that travels through the world.
The only response to this is to create a much more robust system that will be operated by robots instead of humans that are prone to making errors.
With more complex system you need more granular and finer control over the actions, otherwise it will fall apart. We are in that stage. To create more granular control we put tracking on everything, finer control comes with a greater ability to control all the parts in the chain supply. Robots are perfect for this purpose.
Totalitarian society. It's no coincidence that in the last couple of years there has been a tremendous erosion of human freedom and privacy. We have mass surveillance, military on the streets, censorship of speech, the top notch propaganda machine.
When the shit hits the fan, all these parts will be already in place and it will be impossible for the plebs to push back. The reason why the EU let so many illegal rapefugees in is that they will create chaos and the only response is to give government even more power over peoples' lives. It's the most basic formula for expansion of power.
People will live in walled cities. Our environment is fucked up beyond recovery. These cities will be the only liveable patches of civilization spread around the globe. If you try to run away you will die, because everything else will be a deadly toxic wasteland.
It will be a privilege to live there. Everything will be monitored and the citizens will be happy to be alive. Probably these will be 1% of the world's population or some genetically engineered plebs with a programmed cast level (workers, thinkers, the elite). Everything what doesn't have to be done by humans will be done by machines.
Basic income is a meme to keep the masses calm. Once the normies realize it's a slaughter time they will go all nuts, because they still believe they are somehow valuable because of some moral reasons that have no basis in the physical reality. Human history is like a river. People come and people go. People are disposable energy units.
