In the Christian conception, stealing a pack of gum makes you unfit to enter Heaven and will condemn you to an eternity of torture in Hell. No one is righteous, not one, as said in Romans, and this renders them utterly unfit for God's presence - and this is felt by believers.

Is it all plausible that pagans had such a conception of sin, in the absence of a redeemer? Did every pagan, as soon as he committed the very slightest infraction (which was probably doing a grumpy dumpy to spite mommy when he was 1 year old) then spend the rest of his life thinking that he had committed a catastrophic act which could never be rectified - and it would never be able to be rectified without a redeemer about which the pagan obviously knew nothing, in your conception?

Even if pagans believed that everyone committed some sin (doubtful, but let's run with it), they could not have believed sin to be as catastrophic as Christians do. There were larger and smaller infractions, but the average pagan certainly didn't cast his life away because he felt anger in his heart that one time.

I accept that, but one has to wonder what the sorriness is supposed to accomplish. Did Jesus not say that his burden was light, and that his sacrifice would wash away all sins? What does sorrow then add? It seems to me that the Christian is not delivered from the power of sin at all; rather, he spends all his life being "sorry" for this, that, and the other thing, and inventing ever-new things to be sorry for, thinking that, maybe, the sacrifice of Christ wasn't quite enough to save him from Hell, so better crank that regret and guilt up to 11, you never know!
