Me too. :) I was run out of an evangelical / charismatic church in my 20s. The reason I initially checked them out is because I was curious to see if the speaking in tongues/writhing on the ground stuff was the same as the kundalini awakening I was undergoing. It generally was not, though I did find a Christian here or there that was undergoing the genuine process, in my opinion. I tried to tell one of them about it and offer them some advice on tempering part of their spiritual practices to smooth the experience out (they had bad side effects – headaches and stuff – from overdoing prayer practices), and that's what led to me being kicked out of the church. I was accused of being a devil that was sent to steal Christians. :)

I was baptized by that church, though, and the experience was powerful. I think it's because God is real, and ritual is a powerful thing. My experience was that of profound inner silence descending upon me like "feathers". I felt it with intensity for a couple days afterwards.

As I mentioned above meditating on Christ is powerful. For me, the idea is that He is a man in whom God dwells. Thus, meditating on oneness with Christ is an archetypal shortcut for oneness with God.
