Just go game hunting with your friends, you learn a lot about people when hunting and often there is time to talk to people about politics and the worlds affairs during a hunt of the travel to the hunting location. I'd rather have one friend who can shoot than two that can't.
Many techniques from hunting can transfer to combat. ie never walk in front of a mans line of fire, always go behind to get past, and this must be instinctive because in the hunt so much is going on.

I have basic military training, but I think I learned more from hunting with dogs. They communicate by collectively turning toward wind that carries the smell. That's step one with dogs, scouting.
Second step is stalking, after locating they stalk carefully.
Step three, encirclement, self explanatory.
Step four, breaking the herd by running straight into it, isolating the prey. Kinda cool, and kinda what you can do if you have the armor.
Step five, intimidation. Dogs tend not to attack directly, they howl and show teeth first, attempting to intimidate prey into running, avoiding frontal attacks. I've seen them avoiding to rush large game if intimidation fails.

Kinda funny, dog and human psychology. They are apex predators after all, using communication, flanking, encircling, isolating, avoiding frontal attacks and so on. Kinda scary how instinctive it all is, doesnt take too much training or learning, just like a baby knowing how to swim, cry, etc.

Also if it is of any use, from the people I talked with who did some combat in urban environment, they said that knife is equally important as the gun, but if you only have 5.56 or some other low/pistol caliber, knowing how to use a knife would be even more important.
You should be stabbing behind clavicle with the ice pick grip, and knife should be long enough to reach heart and lungs. You should also stab inside of a thigh. Screwdriver-like knife is best for this.
Bayonet like knife (shorter, broader kind) can be used for ribcages, by stabbing trough or next to ribs, and then prying open a hole in the ribcage for the thrust.

Interestingly enough, stabbing the head should be avoided. To kill a man, you need to hit a very precise spot in the head, construction workplace incidents tell us stories of men stabbing their brains in all sorts of ways, and remaining perfectly functional.

If you're talking about 7.62 real fuckin' NATO then you're right about penetration, but in close quarters 5.56 shits all over it because of it's lower recoil which gives your more accurate follow up shots. 5.56 with tungsten cores can rip through most cover and pretty much and body armor.

They are both very different weapons made for very different reasons.

The ar15 is designed to cause serous wounds to create a war of attrition with field hospital logistics. it was based on precision rifles and made into a full auto platform with a low caliber high velocity round.

The ak47 was based on a drum sub machine gun given a smaller magazine and larger caliber round. Part of its design was inspired by the mp44, the first true assault rifle.

Overpenetration is one of the reasons why nearly every modern military uses 5.56/5.45 as their primary small arms calibre (barring marksmen and other niche roles). If you're okay with clearing houses using a round that treats drywall like toilet paper, I'd hate to be your next door neighbor. Or one of your squadmades outside.

You've seen the AK comparison video, right? It gets coated in mud, dust cover still on, and fires one round successfully before becoming a fucked bolt-action. A firearm's ability to prevent its action from being compromised is a pretty big deal.

More to the point- the AK is DESIGNED to have loose tolerances for easier manufacture, maintenance, and assembly. The slavs did a great job with that, especially with the jump from the AK-47 to the AKM/AK74 further lowering manufacturing costs with a stamped receiver. However, this also means that an AK rifle will suffer from muddy, watery environments. A lot of the fuddlore about the AK working perfectly from the Vietnam war came from the GIs being more butthurt about their M16s not coming with cleaning kits.

The AR platform is incredibly well sealed against shit getting into the gun. This is primarily due to its tight manufacturing tolerances. However, when shit gets into a gun's action, I'm not going to dispute that the AK is a lot easier to clean and render ready to fire again. It's more of a prevention versus repair problem.

I don't disagree that larger battle rifle calibers have a place on the battlefield, especially for destruction of cover or penetrating materials. My raifu is the FAL. If you're a lone-wolf type who doesn't have a chain of command, supply logistics, or basically anything but a pair of jackboots and 500 rounds in a backpack, go with .308/7.62 every time.
I'm under the impression that when dealing with lefty fucks like in the OP, you're in a RWDS, "just barely a militia" type scenario where you can't necessarily afford to warn the nice h'wite family next door that their communist hippies that stink up the backyard with patchouli are going to get fucked. If most of your squad is using 5.56, you can afford to be a bit more gung-ho with clearing rooms and not worrying about collateral damage. Having a marksman or two with 7.62 helps too.

Also, overpenetration concerns both solid cover and the human body. 5.56/5.45 tumbles when it hits, dumping a shitton of force into whoever you hit. You could get around that using 7.62 hollow points, but that ruins the round's ability to punch through cover (somewhat).

The AK will work with dust and dirt in it, not mud which cakes in and jams the firing mechanism. The AK is meant to operate for a long period with limited maintenance, which is not the same thing as a test of how well it keeps out mud and other debris.

Still, modern vets complain about sand and debris failing up their standard issue so I wouldn't say that the problem is solved since nam.

I've fired both 7.62x39 and 5.56 NATO/.223, through my SKS and my bolt action .223 as well as my buddy's AR-15.

The farthest shots I've taken with them came last year at around 500 yards at prairie dogs. For accuracy purposes, the 5.56/.223 is way better at that distance. But at around 200 or maybe 250 yards, the accuracy difference is negligible.

For a survival weapon in SHTF, I'd rather have the 5.56 NATO. I can kill most game, and can do it from further away. The rifle is lighter, the ammo is lighter, the recoil is lighter. No argument from me there. Not to mention, ammo is more abundant in the US.

In a combat situation? I'd honestly prefer the AK or other 7.62x39 variants. (SKS, VZ-58, etc.) I don't really care what the spreadsheets say, my observations and feel so far as recoil is concerned is that the 7.62x39 has the advantage.

My history could be a little off, but I believe the 7.62x39 is from the 40's and because the mentality of that period was "kill the enemy" it was simply a scaled down 7.62x54 for better use in carbines and "assault rifles" as opposed to "battle rifles" The 5.56 NATO/.223 came later during the 60's where the mentality was "wound the enemy, and force two of his comrades to carry him away" as well as being built to tumble because by that time, hollow points had been outlawed in war (lulz) by the Geneva Convention or some amendment to it, or some other doctrine we signed on to.

In other words, the 5.56 NATO was a bullet built to do something other than kill people, as well as a gimmick to achieve similar results to a hollow point, without actually being a hollow point.

The 7.62x39 was built to kill people, and there are no gimmicks. Use a hollow point, or don't, at your discretion.

Although at the end of the day, they are both anemic as far as actual rifle rounds are concerned. And unless weight is of concern, a 7.62 NATO/.308 is a much more powerful round that is readily available and whose platforms are generally able to be found with rails for your tacticool pleasure.

Never even fired a SCAR-17 but I'd probably blindly accept one over my 7.62x39's or .223's if I had to walk outside into a battlefield. There is no question that a real NATO round is more accurate, faster, has more force, has more stopping power, is more lethal, etc. It's a superior round in almost every way except for weight. If I wanted to clear a home and was worried about over-penetration, I'd rather use a shotgun and shot than a rifle anyway.
