Actual socialism in the west is pretty much dead anyways and limited to LARP'ing. The way I see it, this is the best bet on actually getting some of your demands through to the public and is the most realistic option by far.

Was reddit always painful or has it become flanderized? I had a few accounts there in the last couple of years before I found 8ch but I normally ended up ragequitting due to their smugness, pedantry or modfaggotry. People get torn a new asshole for deliberately missing the point by misreading quirks of language to win a debate on imageboards, but it seems like enough redditors use it as a tactic and everyone seems to indulge them, is that something you've noticed?

Eh. Reddit has always been pretty insufferable, even back in the days. The one thing it had going back in 2009 was the fact that the average age was a bit higher than it was on the image boards.
When I first started using the site back in 2009 it was just getting out of its tech/programmer audience, and even then it was pretty bad on the STEM fedora bullshit.

Hackernews has pretty much completely replaced reddit's role as a supplier of news media and blogs to read during the day for me. Even though hackernews is a tech libertarian den, the average age does so much for the quality of a community.
Pic related is the list of subreddits I follow, of those the only one I can reasonably recommend badphil, and that's only if you don't mind some idpol. Rest are anywhere between dead and okay.

It's the same with imageboards. If you look at the fetishization of "old-4chan". Back in the days "old-4chan" was pre-2008, then it was pre-2010, then pre-2012.
The truth is, the world doesn't change as much as we like to think. 4chan had the same strengths and weaknesses back in 2010 as it has today - only Holla Forums exists today, but that's a different issue - the same is true for reddit. As soon as a community grows beyond the ~20-50k limit, single power users stop having any meaningful influence on the community momentum, and the culture of the people the community attracts become the community culture. Reddit attracts insufferable high schoolers. Holla Forums attracts edgy middle schoolers. Holla Forums attracts people disenfranchised with the people around them, etc.
I think leftypol is still somewhere around the edge, but it's getting closer and closer every day. The only hope is that whatever leftypol changes into is something desirable, although hope is slim.

Pretty much the same conclusion I've come to. 4chan was never the greatest, but it had its rare moments. Some of the offshoot chans, now mostly long forgotten save for KC and maybe 420 (not been there in years), were the best parts of early chan culture. A lot of the best memes and acts associated with 4chan were other communities making it the new ebaumsworld, just like Holla Forums blames 4chan for things today. Some day I'll probably be somewhere else, blaming everything on the big bad final bosses over at Holla Forums. Maybe even having the strange feeling of subtle rage/smug joy that Holla Forums got the credit for something brilliant it didn't do on sites like KYM, soaking up the idiots for a little longer.
Anons biggest failings were being stupid enough to launch Project Chanology (COINTELPRO) and not raiding icanhascheezburger into the ground. They should have pummeled those yuppie fucks harder than scientology.

Reddit is inherently broken by its slashdot-style post ranking system that basically hands the control of the conversation to no-lifes with the most free time on their hands. At least on imageboards you have to work pretty hard to fake consensus, on reddit you simply hide the undesirables by flooding the vote.
