I keep my Dock at the bottom of my screen.

The area that tells me system status, date and time : top 20 pixels
The area that tells me what graphical applications are now running : right 50 pixels

Taskbar goes on the top like any other menu.

Side taskbar is just a symptom for lack of vertical space. 16:9 was a mistake. Anything less than 1200p is only acceptable on laptops.
