.45 ACP has almost no modern relevance as a military round unless you are ONLY fighting durkadurk subhumans with no armor. I'm sorry guys but the ballistic performance of .45 is total fucking ass compared to modern rounds and especially when you take armor into account. Shooting someone with a .45 is kind of like hitting someone with a heavy frying pan. It's a large, slow round with a lot of force behind it that dissipates very quickly precisely because it is large and slow. It drops off quickly and has poor range, even when compared with its contemporaries like 9mm Parabellum.

This is coming from a Texan with a Ruger made 1911 sitting near his bed. The 1911 is a beautiful, iconic, reliable weapon, and .45 is a good round for self defense because almost all self defense situations happen at very close range and with unarmored subhumans. The size and stopping power of a round comes in handy when your opponent may be a drugged up psychopath, and it has a well deserved reputation among civilians and perhaps even law enforcement. But I wouldn't issue it to military personnel because it's just asking for some "real" war involving a nation that equips its troops with body armor, and some ass clown pencil pusher decides it's too expensive to replace all our 1911s, then our troops have worthless sidearms for the war. Better to find a pistol more suited for every situation to issue to our troops.

Also forgot to add, the short range and lack of penetration are virtues in civilian/law enforcement contexts because you want as little collateral as possible.

yeah, because in modern wars we shoot at armored targets with 9mm pistols. The M9 isn't standard issue because of how it performs against armor. It has less recoil and holds 15 rounds, that's why.

The solution to that was figured out ages ago. THVs in 45 super for armored targets and 45 ball for suppressed sneaky stuff. Sabots with tungsten if you have the budget and starting out with a 45 caliber hole means the projectile riding inside can still be a decent diameter. Want to punch armor with a "handgun" then put some bronze THVs in a 9-inch 454 Casull Ruger Super Redhawk at ~3000 fps. It would weigh half as much as a M4 and be twice the cost. Not to mention revolvers lack of capacity the military harps on because they won't (or can't) teach marksmanship anymore.

My point is, if you need more than a what a hi-cap 1911 in 45 super can do, then you need something other than a standard serviced-sized handgun. The sidearm is the smallest gun issued in any military but human physiology dictates a minimum caliber and muzzle energy to immediately kill a human being with fmj ammunition; that's what 45acp is. Foreign fag militaries use handguns as a badge of rank or to threaten disobedient soldiers at most. Only the US military really thought of them as fighting weapons, the same for shotguns for the longest time because we aren't a nofuns country. We shoot each other with them so we know they work.

The revolvers they favoured were equally good for terrorising the troops and shooting wogs/krauts.

The primary impetus for the rise in popularity of the .45 for military use was the Moro Rebellion. The standard issue US Cavalry .38 revolvers and .30-40 Krag rifles of the time were woefully inefficient in stopping a charging Moro warrior in his tracks, and resulted in a large loss of American life at the point of a charging Moro's spear (The British also experienced similar woes when fighting various indigenous tribes during that time period with their .38s and .303s), despite the Flip Jungle Mudslimes having been shot sometimes multiple times mid-charge. The slow and heavy .45 round solved this problem by hitting like a ton of bricks against unarmored targets and usually incapacitating them with a single shot. It was a great solution to a practical problem at the time, and it's still great for dropping unarmored ooga boogas, which is why it'll always have a special place in my heart.

However, if we're talking more modern rounds for applications against armored opponents, give me something chambered in 10mm auto or 5.7x28mm.

.303 was certainly effective at killing. Problem was it didn't have the same sort of punch to it.
.45 disperses a lot of force over a large area and can physically stop a target moving towards (results very based on impact point, weight of target, what they're wearing, etc)

.303 was perfectly capable of killing but when you're hopped up on adrenaline you can ignore fatal injury for a brief time.

The difference is that .45 is not very good beyond 50 meters or so. 5.56 or 7.62 are generally accurate up to 300 meters (depending on the gun) and can still kill at more than that, if you have the optics and skill to shoot further than that.

Sidearms are for self-defense situations against an unarmored target. Those 99.9% are at 50 meters range. Hence, .45 is perfect for this role.

It's still used by the Canadian border patrol in the northern regions of the country for dealing with any threats they encounter (mostly polar bears) and for hunting if they need to supplement their food supply in the arctic conditions.
Still used in SMLE rifles no less. Though I heard they were looking to replace these due to their age and difficulty of maintaining weapons that are over a hundred years old due to parts not being available.
