Instead of having one group group of moderators who have absolute power over content, people subscribe to filters created by other chan users. The CP issue could be solved by having one or two global moderators who only remove illegal content, same as here.

Depends on what parts are decentralized, and how similar to current imageboards it needs to remain. It is theoretically kinda possible, and we need people seriously working on it.

'Moderation' has to mean something different if you're truly decentralizing the system. Like, it would probably all be opt-in. Imagine a BO is just whoever squats on an address… a non-DNS address, inside of, let's call it dischan.

Hell, you could give each thread it's own address space. 'Mods' could be a filtered subset of the posts that people subscribe to, instead of the raw full space.

Which is kinda how it works now… except mods sit between us and the database, and actually remove or edit things before we can see them. This would be the same in that the mods would be creating a filtered list… but it wouldn't be mandatory, as people could always dig through the space themselves and see everything unfiltered, or fuck, just subscribe to a different moderator over the same 'board'.

Honestly, there are bigger problems than moderation if you're talking a fully p2p imageboard. Like synchronization, sequencing, and fucking spam.

Imagine having to 'check the fucking catalog' when the catalog is now almost literally infinite. Who ages threads out? Who decides thread length limits? Imagine being told to go catch up on pizzagate in 2021, when the thread is 350k (nonspam) replies. How do you implement a captcha (or other 'slow your roll, hombre' system) to prevent threads being instantly shitted up with millions of replies if there isn't a central place posts have to get permission / signed from?

Making a p2p messaging system, even (largely) anonymous, allowing the messages to independently thread, being able to fork threads… all these things are relatively easy compared to the task of making the above _and_ not making it a totally unusable clusterfuck for communication.

if it's decentralized, why do you need to report it? someone gonna shut down the p2p system for illegality? you know how to filter, right? Subscribe to a shared filter, that's probably all moderation would be anyway…

Popular threads get unpinned and removed if the ratio of the same ip's post more in them then newer ip's or if nothing gets posted.

There are very good things mailing lists have, that should (probably) be retained. However, they are fucking super centralized.
The encryption relies on already knowing the keys of your endpoints.
The antispam relies on either a central filter and moderation, or each endpoint to replicate their own filtering.
Mailing lists can only 'not be shut down' if your list is decentralized, and everyone is ccing everyone. Think it's a bright idea to ship gigabyte threads around to every one who subscribes, and resend everytime there's an addition?

I'm not certain that a decentralized system is necessary, but lots of people working on the p2p meshnets are, and let's hope they've figured out something workable before we find out if they were right.
