What is very common with evangelicals maybe even more than most Christians is that the ones who go to church a lot are quite different from the typical redneck who says he believes in god and is a Baptist, but goes to church like twice a year. Those quiet, personal-faith Christians are usually pretty harmless politically.

The Southern Baptist Convention is the only significant Christian denomination that opposes gun control. They can be good on some issues, but basically they are all about adopting, immigration, taking in refugees, and stopping abortion. I'd hypothesize that a lot of it stems from the denominations with an emphasis on a lack of church hierarchy, or rather a lack of uniform theology. It allows for a sort of moral relativism in the sense that anyone can interpret the Bible in whatever manner they choose - "Jesus is a live and let live kinda guy" mentality.
Hierarchy promotes uniformity, which generally does not allow for individualistic wiggle room. It's what kept the Catholic Church at least somewhat respectable until modern times.
