To me the problem isn't that he went back in time, it's how they didn't really address the glaring time paradoxes that arise from having Ashi be the one to send him to the past - If Aku dies in the past and Ashi never existed then who sends Jack back to the past to defeat Aku?

There's also an unaccounted for Jack in the future that isn't Aku, alone and probably pretty confused

Cameron Anderson

This, we all knew that if Jack returned to the past and undo the evil that is Aku, everything would change. I think, most people who have a problem with this are waifu fags who liked the ship.
Personally I am glad we received one final season. Yeah it's rushed, flawed, with some bad decisions here and there, I would have preferred if there was no Ashi, but it wasn't horrible, it wasn't Legend of Korra and there wasn't any lore rapping, or lesbian shipping. The first three episodes were the best.

First three episodes were awesome, Jack has PTSD or something from the Samurai Ghost that follows him. At this point anons were thinking "Who the hell is this? Is it representative of Jack's Fury or perhaps it's death riding on a pale horse?"
We're shown as well that Jack isn't the same Jack, he's become cynical and only wishes to return to the past but his mind is haunted by his inactions.
There's a woman faction known as the daughter of Aku rising up for the sole purpose of killing Jack, and after Scaramouche gets shanked, Jack is surprised attacked by the daughters in the Crypt, he's pushed forward by the Samurai ghost and his suicidal self.

Ashi is what ruined this season. It pisses me off how great the first three episodes were, Jack could have gotten himself a fucking wolf! But no we got gook-faced Tara. Not only was she bland and an uninspired character, her being in the story bogged down the quality and presentation, because so much time was spent to a shit romance in the time span of less than seven episodes.

I have a minor nitpicks here and there, most are explained by time restraints but whatever;
Why have The Scotsman die, turn into a ghost, only for it not to be used at all during the final confrontation?
Why in any logical reason would Jack keep Ashi alive when he killed all of her sisters other than plot?
In the final episode, Aku sees Jack and Ashi travel to the past with her BULLSHIT PULLED STRAIGHT FROM GENNDY'S ASS Aku powers, It would be natural to expect Aku to travel to the past as well, why didn't he do it as soon as he realized they left? Surely Aku can time travel whenever he wishes.
I was expecting that Wolf to be Jack's partner throughout this season after he killed the daughters, fanfiction when?

Objectively speaking, season 5 a shit.

I'm just glad we got a fucking ending. Ideally I would have preferred if we had a two parter finale, we could skip the one episode where he and Ashi kiss after fighting the weird leech monster, and then we could have had plenty of time for a good fight with Aku in present and past.
In the end I don't really hate Genndy for what happened, he knew this was the only chance he had to give Jack any form of closure, and he had to take it. Shit, the network didn't even give two shits about him while he was making the highest viewed show on Adult Swim when they told him to fuck off because Surprise RIck and Morty premier. It wasn't ideal, it wasn't great, it's just what we got and I'm glad Genndy got to say he finished his most popular work before being sent back to the Sony Pictures mine to force out Hotel Transylvania 3 for the Adam Sandler money train.

There's also an unaccounted for Jack in the future that isn't Aku, alone and probably pretty confused

Here's an idea. What if, because there's no Aku, there is logically no reason for the sword to exist, so he loses that immediately. Also, because he still went through the portal, time travel rules cause him to still not age. He's left to try to make a living in the world with his primary skill, fighting. He eventually earns a reputation and is hired by a bunch of people in some criminal underworld to do their dirty work. He eventually meets a girl and she kinda becomes his reason to leave the business since he's done enough work earned quite a lot in his endeavours in terms of earnings and reputation. They get married, but she dies, of course, because he can't ever be happy. She leaves him something, though, to give him a chance to move on with his life in peace. Unfortunately, there's this major player in the criminal underworld he was a part of who's too young to know him by reputation. By some sheer coincidence, that guy decided to fuck with him by killing the dog his wife left him and steal his car. The rest of the story is about him being really mad about that.

By sheer coincidence, his name is kinda still "Jack".

There's really nothing that makes Ashi a better character than than Korra.

She's not Korra.

Jack's mission isn't to go back to the past, it's to kill Aku and save the world from his evil. By monomaniacally focusing on going back to the past for four seasons he ended up a swordless loser wandering around killing mooks. Best ending would have been Jack killing Aku and coming to terms with the past being the past, no do-overs.

Jaxson Young
Jaxson Young

I think this would likely have been a more satisfying ending. Either that, or the creation of two timelines - one where Aku ruled but was then defeated, and one where Aku was defeated in the past. At least that way there's no paradox, Ashi could still "disappear" back to her original timeline and the folk in the future get to continue to exist.

Is Jack's past more important than a Post-Aku future?

Brayden Mitchell
Brayden Mitchell

To Jack it is. A future in which Jack didn't return to the past, means that he failed to save his family and kingdom. During the first episode of the final season, Jack is tormented by the guilt of knowing that he is stranded in the future and he can't save his parents.

Exactly. None of them get to live if Jack doesn't go back to the past. I think we can all agree that that ending is not satisfying
I posted a similar ending but here's how to fix the entire season:
in the sixth episode brak doesn't tell ashi where to find jack
in the seventh episode jack starts off at the top of the mountain, it's implied that it's been a while since he left ashi by showing a montage of him trying to find his sword
at the top of the mountain he prays to the gods to return his sword
meanwhile ashi returns to the daughters of aku lair where she confronts her mother
her mother says she has not fulfilled her purpose
there's a parallel where the gods say jack has not fulfilled his purpose
ashi then has a fight with her mother
meanwhile the army approaches the mountain where jack is sitting
mad jack emerges from meditating jack and argues with the gods, saying that "he" [meditating jack] have stopped them from killing aku
the army marching towards jack begins to slowly morph into copies of mad jack
ashi comes to an impasse in the fight, both her and her mother have knives against eachother's throats
the mad jacks all yell at meditating jack, saying that he has failed, and that it's their time to be in control
ashi argues with her mother, mom says that she is a killer and has killed her sisters by not completing her mission
the army surrounds meditating jack, one approaches him to attack, saying "it's my time now"
the screams from the multiple mad jacks comes to a climax
ashi manages to kick the knife away from her mother, and in parallel to episode 2 she cuts her mother's throat, which causes her to spill her blood all over the floor and her mask to break
ashi sees her own face on her mother, and runs away from the lair
before the blow hits, jack opens his eyes (which are glowing), and says "no"
mad jack is gone, the screaming stops, everything is dead silent
jack hears a rumble and sees that the actual army of orcs is still at the base of the mountain
they threaten jack
he repeats what his father said to the bandits (about their choices leading to this outcome) from the first few episodes
suddenly he starts floating, thunder can be heard
the orcs start to panic
meditating jack is engulfed by a white aura
the mountain begins to fall apart, giant chunks of it orbit the white orb/aura
at the center, a silhouette of jack is seen
"morphing" back through his various outfits, from bearded wilderness jack to the armoured jack from the first episode, through several easter egg costumes from the original series, back to his regular samurai outfit
the aura retracts into the form of the blade, the silhouette of jack floats down to the ground below, the mountain is demolished
what's left of the army stands in front of him, the orc leader, cocky, says "all that for a outfit change?"
jack pulls out his sword, makes one slash, cutting the leader perfectly in half, which leads to a chain reaction of explosions, destroying the entire army
cut to jack walking away in the rain
meanwhile scaramouch finds aku and tells him about jack not having his sword
episode 8 begins with jack wandering the world, asking people with directions to the portal, showing him aging via his beard and his clothes
eventually he begins to look like how the portal with the guardian prophesied him to be (with the cloak and whatnot)
finally, he finds his way back to the portal, the guardian is still there although aged and battle-scared considerably
jack then has a battle with the guardian, who is clearly barely keeping up unlike his first appearance
an explosive knocks both the guardian and jack backwards
jack tries to get up but is trapped under a piece of rubble
suddenly, he sees demongo descend next to the guardian, who can barely get up
demongo absorbs his essence to jack's misfortune
he gets up from the rubble and immediately charges at demongo
demongo turns around and begins to greet jack, only to find that the samurai is a few feet from plunging his sword into him
demongo dodges and releases a few warriors to try and defeat jack
jack, while fighting the warriors, considers just entering the portal
he decides he must free the warriors trapped within demongo
cue fight with demongo
jack then tries to free the essences like he did the first time he saw demongo
demongo thwarts jack, cut to wide shot of demongo, the portal, and jack
cut to ashi, who is trying to find jack and also think about killing her mother
she searches far and wide, and gradually begins to lose hope of finding jack
eventually she finds jack's old villiage, and enters one of the huts
she sits down in it for a while, eventually a ghost appears
it's cricket girl, who apparently is her long-lost ancestor
cricket girl tells her people, honor, some random profound bullshit, etc, how aku threatened her people with extinction
ashi decides to go out and continue looking for jack

Ian Bell
Ian Bell

2/2
episode 9
jack is still fighting demongo
eventually jack finds some way to cause him to release all of his essence
as the released warriors gather around demongo, he pleads for his life, saying he'll "tell them anything"
eventually he mentions that he knows how to destroy aku once and for all
jack says that he already can do that
demongo reminds jack that aku can just portal jack into the future as a last resort
he tells jack that if he can block aku's screech with the sword, he can effectively stop aku
a shadow rises behind jack while he's talking to demongo
it's aku, who promptly eye-lasers (most) of the warriors to death
he lifts up demongo, and says "you have failed me for the last time""
jack tries to run to the portal while aku is distracted with demongo
scaramouch, who notices this, tells aku, who then lasers the portal before jack can get to it
aku notices jack has his sword, and crushes scaramouch between his finger
ashi enters the robot graveyard and finds jack and aku
the episode continues as it actually happened, except that aku notes that ashi smells both like jack and himself, saying that it's ironic that ashi is a distant relative of jack's but also his daughter
also, jack manages to kill ashi but, in the fray, aku manages to trap jack, who is emotionally traumatized from killing ashi and the realization that he basically killed his kin
jack admits defeat and drops the sword
episode 10
starts the same way, except ashi is not there, as she is dead
jack manages to get the sword while aku is distracted, and has a final epic battle with him
aku is near defeat
as jack puts the sword to the ground, aku tries to portal him to the past
remembering demongo's advice, he blocks the portal with his sword, which begins pulsating like the portal
aku exclaims "how would you know to do that?" in disbelief
jack doesn't respond, and lifts the sword one last time to finally kill aku
aku tries to warn jack that everything he has done won't matter anymore if he is destroyed with the sword, as it will undo everything
jack drives the sword into the ground, tearing a hole in time
cut back to the first episode in glorious 4:3
after aku sends jack to the future, he begins pulsating like the time portal
a white silhouette the sword begins to emerge from his body
aku says "no, how could I have possibly fai-" and is enveloped in a blinding flash of light, which turns the whole screen white, including the black margins from the 4:3 aspect ratio
the light dissipates, the screen has returned to 16:9, all that is left is the burning poison arrow, which drops to the ground, the flame going out
cut to the future/present
jack's friends congratulate him, but he notices something
the more alien of them start dissapearing out of existence
eventually all of them are gone, the background setting changes
jack is in an ancient temple preserved in the middle of a modern city
he begins to lose his memories of everything that happened after aku portaled him, and he falls to the ground in the fetal position
some stranger asks "sir, are you alright"
he returns to normal, gets up, says "yes, i'm fine" and walks away
everyone is staring at him for some reason
jack walks to the base of the temple stairs, and he sees a statue that looks like him
he reads the engraving on the statue, which says "Our son, the hero"
the placard next to the statue says "This statue was constructed as a tribute to the late son of emperor x who, in myth, was told to have disappeared after defeating the demon aku."
a smile comes to jack's face as he realizes he did the right thing
cut to a wide shot of the statue
a reverse timelapse begins, showing the statue de-aging eventually to the point of it's initial construction, with jack's mother and father crying while looking at the partially constructed statue
cut to credits

and that was the bitter reality from day one.

That all of this connection to the future was only temporary based on Jack's ability to go back in time. That future was never meant to be. If Aku didn't use time shenanigans. It would have never happened. The connection to all the characters, and the audience getting to know them was the great sacrifice he had to make to make things right. Millions of lives that were created out of Aku's conquest of the galaxy, as well as those lost, were all undone. I doubt the Scotsman will ever be born, or the Spartans, or the talking dogs, or even lulu. (btw, was lulu retarded or something? dogs could talk in the future) because the events that led up to them being born likely will never happen, certain ancestors will never meet or will.

But that's okay, they were never meant to be. They also will never know what it's like to suffer under Aku.
