I think part of the reason why Mexico is so fucked that the US has vested interests in the current (corrupt) mexican gov. system. They don't want any large institutional shakeups because it could cause more immediate immigration, riots, etc. and the people replaced could be anti-american and anti-western in general. Or planted by various parties wanting some of that sweet sweet gulf-oil, mostly China.
Any revolution or large scale tree-shaking would be halted, or at least heavily repressed and then infiltrated by US alphabet agencies because any risk of a hostile anti-american party gaining power is too large of a national security and economic risk.

Every place seems to tax gas a lot, so that doesn't seem like it'd play a role here so much as the fact that the country's old choices are now taking effect.

China today is a dysfunctional mess. Massive fraud is a way of life (gutter oil, fake eggs, fake bird nests, fake shark fins, fake meat, everything is loaded with poisons, fake everything), their economy is unstable and exists solely thanks to fraud and bubbles (ghost cities), pollution is worse than all of Europe during the Industrial Revolution and continues to worsen, and despite losing horribly in Korea, Vietnam, etc. China continues to pretend it’s a major military power and tries to provoke a conflict with its neighbors. Rarr, China strong! We have aircraft carrier! Built in the ‘90s by the Soviets, took us years to finish, and still isn’t operational! America has bigger, more advanced aircraft carriers and more of them than the rest of the planet combined, we should totally start shit with them! And the average Chinaman is still a peasant with a shitty education (but grades are inflated due to cheating and systemic fraud, so they look like they’re on par with the civilized world), shitty living standards, and shitty income. China is still a land of feudal barbarians; they’ve just traded their peasants for factory workers, their lords for businessmen, and their emperor for the politburo. China is a backwards hellhole with delusions of superiority and the entire country is going to get a collective slap in the face when they finally work up the nerve to challenge a real, developed nation. Let’s go back in history again!
The Korean War! Communists invaded South Korea and China alone sent in 1.5x as many troops as every country supporting South Korea. China took overwhelming losses and pulled out of the war. At the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, China had an American unit surrounded and outnumbered 40 to 1. The American unit broke out and destroyed 40% of the entirety of Chinese military strength in North Korea, thoroughly humiliating China in the process. The invasion of South Korea was defeated and both sides agreed to a ceasefire that continues to this day. Result: American victory, humiliating loss for China
The Vietnam War! American gets dragged into France’s conflict because of commies, again. The American forces consistently rape the North Vietnamese army and VC guerrillas, but wasn’t allowed to end the war because politicians didn’t want them invading North Vietnam or Cambodia. America eventually pulled out of the war because of communist sympathizers at home swaying politicians, not because of any military losses. North Vietnam was utterly incapable of beating South Vietnam while America was in the war. China then decided to invade Vietnam. The entire war lasted less than a month. China, which massively outnumbers Vietnam, invaded a country that was already exhausted from decades of constant war. China invaded with 6 to 1 numerical superiority and suffered more casualties than Vietnam, lost 420 tanks (vs. 185 Vietnamese tanks). China retreated, leaving Vietnam in control of Cambodia, the Spratly Islands, and basically every other piece of territory China wanted to claim. China remains butthurt to this day and still claims they won the war and are the rightful owners of the Spratly Islands.

Is a picture starting to be formed here? China has been destroyed by multiple ethnic and political groups in what is now modern China for centuries. Then China was destroyed by the Mongols. Repeatedly. Then the Japanese. Then the French. Then the British. Then the Germans. Then the Japanese again. Then the Russians, several times. Then the Americans. Then the Japanese again. Then the Americans and South Koreans. Then the Vietnamese. Even fucking India, a country that gives incompetence a new meaning, has given China as much shit as China has given it.
So whose turn is it to make China their bitch this time? Their tactics are shit and consist entirely of human wave frontal assaults, which suck when going up against fortifications, machine guns, artillery, armor, air support, and basically anything that isn’t a bunch of spearchucking savages like the millions of Chinese rushing at you in a screaming horde.
Also, the average chink is shorter and weaker than the average European, and for most of their history they’ve been technologically backward. Even now they’re still playing catch up; everything they have is a poorly made copy of a decades-old American or Russian design. Even with access to modern equipment, the Chinese military doesn’t get it. They only received modern underwear this year. 2016. Before, they had crude cotton canvas shorts held up with a rope cinched around their waist. China is the world’s largest exporter of body armor, but the overwhelming majority of the Chinese military has never been issued so much as a flak vest, much less a modern plate carrier. Chinese generals think giving things like body armor to soldiers is “too indulgent” and will spoil them. Seriously, look it up. They also get some of the worst rations on any military on the planet. They’re so awful that the Chinese soldiers refuse to eat them and instead pack lunches from home while on field exercises. These are people who eat rats, cats, dogs, gutter oil, bird nests, century eggs, and other disgusting shit, and they think their rations suck.
Basically, they’re weak, selfish shitheads who throw the lives of their countrymen away without caring one bit. As mentioned at the very beginning, they have no regard for long-term effects. Take the one child policy. You can have only one child, otherwise the Party punishes you. Only boys are regarded as valuable assets, so everyone wants boys. Millions of girls thus get aborted. There is now a massive, terrifying (for them; hilarious for anyone who they’d want to make their enemy) shortage of women in the younger generations.

To expand on their environmental fuck-ups, because it’s just fractally dumb: China is only ~18% arable land, compared to the US where random shit piles on the side of the road can sprout entire fruit trees anywhere east of the Mississippi or west of the Pacific coast rain-shadow. They have decided to pollute the absolute fuck out of this precious, scarce farmland. They then proceeded to use this polluted farmland to build factories dedicated to ripping off the designs of the one major food exporter keeping their people from fucking starving to death–the USA. They double, triple, etc. down on pollution, pumping toxic gases and heavy metals into their environment at a breakneck pace, despite a lot of big showy efforts like building out solar capacity and planting thousands of trees. They set up fraudulent “electronics recycling” companies that pollute even more by leaving hundreds of tons of decaying circuitry out in the sun to leach into the environment while having random peasant children pick through them for scrap. Beijing is now literally Blade Runner levels of uninhabitable where the sky is flat out invisible on bad pollution days and they need huge electronic billboards to display a facsimile of sunny days. This is directly impacting military readiness for future combat, because their kids are growing up to be a bunch of nearsighted, asthmatic dweebs from living in the hell that is modern Chinese cities. If we wait 10-20 years for the last of the rural generations to age out of military service, we can just walk in to the Forbidden City and run up the Stars and Stripes. For good.
