Trotsky might have been a poor politician once was the Soviet state was formalized, but was a really amazing revolutionary in his ability to mobilize and train the Red Army so effectively.

I'd say his brutal suppression of the Free Territory was wrong, but from a Leninist standpoint promoting unity was necessary.

Obviously, that can be judged by those least reviled by the international bourgeoisie. Trotsky and Bukharin both had some Marxist views, but the former's narcissism rendered him little more than a petty opportunist by the end. The latter simply rejected scientific socialism almost entirely in favor of a pro-market and pro-kulak line.
