We can look back and realise the US and their veterans fought the wrong people but that was hardly the fault of the people, who, being isolated so far as international communications in the context of political discourse would generally have had very little to tell them whether the outlets and propaganda they were exposed to were false. The capacity of communications we have today in comparison to them as commoners is superior in effective translation of information between nations.
The Stanford prison experiment is a good example. Impose upon people roles, especially roles of duty or status/power, and very quickly you'll see that despite the individuals initial nature, they can very quickly adopt their assigned roles and begin to act their part even potentially enjoying it. Add a potential personal threat to the subject and you can bet it would effect their views toward other groups, not only that but their whole identity can change.
