Well, if you think about it, kinda. Gold's worth comes from the time it takes to extract and process it right? Along with it's scarcity. I surmise this same idea applies to paintings as well. The worth comes from the time it takes to produce the work, and the quality of the work itself. There isn't a scarcity of paintings, but there is a scarcity of good paintings. At least now-a-days. The only drawbacks to paintings are, it's not as easily exchangeable. It's inferior to gold in that it doesn't have commercial or industrial use, and it's usually larger and harder to exchange physically and would be a more obtuse process.
