Socialist Alternative

I was looking for socialist organizations in my city and the only one that isn't just liberal hippies seems to be Socialist Alternative. Is this organization worth getting involved with? I know they were shilling for Barney Cinders but it seems like maybe that was just a front to pull in disaffected liberals.

arent they trots?

Yes. For whatever it's worth I'm an anarchist but I'm desperate enough I'll work with anyone as long as they're legitimately socialists and they aren't meme parties like the RCP.

why not PSL, or IWW?

PSL doesn't seem to have a branch in my city. Is the IWW still relevant? Even for a socialist organization, I mean. They seem really mired in the past. I'll look into them more though.

pretty sure there are anarchist organizations all over the country, but they're most likely "anarchy lives!" bullshit.
i think you should join the green party, it solves nothing to join a party that barely has any presence in the country's politics. the best way to spread class consciousness and socialism in america is by presenting it as something else, but with the exact same substance, as the greens are doing.

They sound like the classic college-y left-wing party that is mostly driven by Identity Politics and has a lot of criticism to make of the current system but virtually no alternative to offer.

They call themselves trots, but they're really just liberals. The only legitimately Trotskyist group I'm aware of in the US is the SEP. For whatever reason the liberals have latched onto the Trotskyist label. I believe it is because it makes them sound radical, but at the same time still opposed to the big bad bogeyman Stalin.

Pretty much this. They're very big into the idpol from what I hear.

Anyone on /leftypol; who is European or South American knows this party, and hates it. They may seem like a novelty in the american political system, but we've had them for years everywhere else and they're pretty fucking useless

If their inner constitution allows for reform based on its constituency, I say get some friends and try to change it from the inside. But if they're not, it's not worth your effort.

fixed that for you

Ausfags hate them, too. They, over here, go through periods of totally abandoning all talk of worker's self management to try to appeal to a broader base, usually by sticking their cocks balls deep into the idpol hambeast.. They are just liberals with edge.

Ayyyy Australia? Lmao

*seriously though they are huge dicks, but in my first year of uni they certainly took a sledgehammer to all the porky bull-crap my edgy teen self would spout. They compete to learn theory and history even more than people on this board. If such a word would ever grace their sophisticated and often pretentious lingo, they would certainly call us plebs and with good reason. Still….trots, but they are very welcoming of anarchists and other types of anti-capitalists*

Pretty sure I'm the only one in this thread with any actual experience with SAlt. Seriously, I'm pretty sure they don't even have anything to do with Latin America or Australia, what are you guys fucking on about?

No they aren't just liberals, or idpol focused college kids. They are real socialists, the leaders appear to be real trots too. They are theory light, but are focused on revolution as an end goal, with the current tactic being to work within the political system to agitate for change, in order to build class consciousness and worker militancy.

On the other hand they're largely useless at the moment, except the Seattle branch, so you'll need to take some initiative if you want to get anything done, which will be hard since they're not that interested in recruiting, and they are incredibly opposed to change.

I think it's worth it, especially if you're interested in getting involved with a party that actually has some impact in politics, like Kshama Sawant has. Your only other option is really the DSA, and fuuuuuuuuuuck that liberal bullshit.

You're better off with Socialist Appeal tbh

They are massive in Australia what are you talking about?

sa.org.au

As far as I know they only share a name, and are not even affiliated. According to wikipedia they aren't even from the same tendency, Aus SAlt formed from the cliffite International Socialist Organisation, while US SAlt formed from the Militant tendency and Committee for a Workers' International.

Considering American standards they're not terrible, but I guess that's not saying much.

They were down in Philly for the DNC protests and were pretty good, well, until one guy started talking about reform inside the democratic party. Thankfully he was the minority in that regard.

But yeah, they're too idpol as most people said.

Don't listen to . Fuck the Greens.

Even if there's the possibility of reform from the inside it's really not fucking worth it. SA is pure idpol reformist armchair-socialist shit.

No they're a fucking joke now. They're very deep into idpol at the moment.

It seems like a front because it was. I am in SAlt in a big northeastern city.

Only problem I've had so far is their elections at every level literally consist of the current committee nominating themselves , and maybe adding or subtracting a couple of members, and you can either vote for the slate proposed by the outgoing committee OR the entire committee quits in a huff, as happened in. Chicago .

Yeah, we aren't idpol . That's just a meme that some guy keeps trying to push because he tried to join and they didn't want to him.

Go fuck yourself dipshit. We aren't trying to reform the Democratic party, you're thinking of the DSA , idiot. Look at our website sometime, our Erdogan right now is we need a part of the 99%, ie a pay OUTSIDE the two party system.

anyone have the image of the guy who was kicked out of SA for being an actual socialist?

He didn't say anything about you shit-stains trying to reform the democrats. Kill yourself reformist piece of shit.

read "reform or revolution" sometime bitch. We just read it for our last branch meeting. We fall on the side of rosa luxemburg, where are you at ?

I fall on the side of not being a reformist piece of shit that pays lip service to revolutionaries murdered due to reformist pieces of shit being pieces of shit. You put words in his mouth and you are a colossal faggot.

Pick one.

I've heard it depends wildly on the chapter for SA

Ok thanks for the opinions guys, the general consensus here seems to be that they focus too much on identity politics (which I don't really care about as long as they don't ignore class) and other than that ymmv. They're not ideal but they seem like one of my few tolerable options at the moment.

We've organized the largest strike against prison slave labor in U.S. history next month… And the warehouse I work in has an IWW contract.

The people on here aren't involved with real life politics for the most part. Don't sweat them.
