ABH/GBH means actual or grievous bodily harm. They refer to the amount of damage to the victim's body you did. They will call him the victim and you the accused, so get used to that terminology, even if you don't think he's a victim. Your sister is just a witness.

I was assuming that you have been summoned for a criminal trial. It seems likely based on your pic, and the fact you think you might go to jail. If that is the case, then the wealthy of the victim is less important. If it is a civil case - and he can run of these in addition to the criminal case - then his wealth will buy good lawyers, which can have an effect on the case outcome, but will only result in financial compensation rather than jail time.

The biggest problem I can see from your posts so far is that you're not sorry. I don't blame you based on your perception of the events, but if the court thinks that you're not remorseful it'll increase your sentence. I can't advise you to mislead the court, but if you are able to sincerely show that you realise that alternative courses of action would have been preferable, and that your reaction may have been disproportionate, then that would be very good for you.

Regarding your actual case, I assume you'll be in District Court based on the seriousness of your offence. If you have any preconceptions based on attending Local Court for minor matters throw them aside, the District Court is a real court with a Judge while the Local Court is really a mere administrative body with a Magistrate. More than 20x as many convictions for assault are successful for ABH than GBH, and it'll be difficult to prove intent to murder unless you were pried off of his severely damaged body against your will.

In the case of a plea (possibly a bargain) of guilty to assault with ABH you will probably not go to jail. Most likely, you will be given a good behaviour bond, and potentially also or instead a suspended sentence, community service order, or home detention depending on the severity of the assault and your suitability for each sentence.

You can plead self-defence of your sister, and the fact that she is underage will mean that her refusal of such a plea will be essentially irrelevant, but she's still old enough to damage such a plea. Pleading guilty will get you a significant reduction for a first time offence, especially if you act remorseful, usually about ~25% off. You've probably already been strapped with a restraining order, don't worry they're not so bad here as they are in America, make sure you know the rules though.

Anything better would require the specifics of the case, or at least more detail than the age of each party and a general idea of what the charges might be.

"Letters of recommendation", or character statements as they're called, will be very useful. Make sure they state in the statement that they're aware of the charges you face, and that they say that what you've done is an unexpected aberration in your behaviour based on their relationship with you.

You'll get an idea of how it works if you don't, though in Local Court a lot of people will be self-represented. If you do get into the big house OP, and I realise many have already said it but I'll hammer it home, prison guards are NOT your defence against other inmates. Likewise, don't be a dick to them and they'll treat you just fine. If there's abos in there, you'll notice they fall into two main groups, metro and rural, which behave very differently. The metro abos are completely wild and will fuck shit up at a moments notice. The rural abos are surprisingly decent, and tend to have their own way of running things. When talking to rurals, don't refer to them as "boys" or "men" until you're certain that they've done their rites of passage or you'll get pinned to a jarrah.

FFL does background checks too. They won't accept criminals. It's not like the old days where anyone could join and they'd take them.
