This is where you err. The mainstream media was just as influential in 1980, if not more so than now. Although cable television was just beginning to appear there were only a few types of media outlets available for news and entertainment. And forget about discussion or dissent especially from a far right perspective.

For the average user, all you had were television, newspapers, radio, audio LP's/tapes, books that were pricey/almost all leftist and finally movies. A good sized city might have had 3-6 t.v. stations, maybe 12-18 AM and FM channels, one or two newspapers at most and then one or two movie houses spewing out whatever Hollywood sent them. That was it and the information flowed only one way.

Occasionally someone might send a letter to the editor and hope the newspaper would publish it but there was effectively no platform with which to fight the leftist media onslaught. Most people didn't weren't even aware of it and greedily slurped up whatever was offered. There were a few local free news rags that did dissent but almost all were far, far left in their viewpoints.

Some of it was that the U.S. was Whiter and achieving a reasonably comfortable lifestyle was somewhat easier. Never in a million years would the population of 1980 believe that we would flood our country with millions of third-world savages and give our industrial base to China.
