Also, an aside, can we all agree that literature and history should be taught side-by-side? We did it in my HS and I can't say enough about it.

It's a beautiful, brilliant system that brings things together in a way I feel is sorely neglected. To connect history and lit means to have a fuller understanding of the past and its culture/accomplishments.

The same should really be done for math/physics/chemistry/biology- a firmer understanding of overlap and connections would go far, I think.

As an FYI, my HS required a year of basic Greek/Latin as it relates to other languages and English as a mandatory course. We tried dropping it for a while in the 1990's and there was a marked decrease in our SAT verbal scores. Since then, all students have been required to learn Greek/Latin roots and basic grammar, kind of a mix between a first year foreign language and a formal etymology class.

To use ancient 4chan terms, shit was so cash. Nothing I encountered in college was without basis or some basic understanding. Almost no term, regardless of its obscurity, was wholly unknown to me. It helps you SEEM smarter and it actually does make you more effective, because it can set you on the right course of research once you hear a term for the first time.
