The issue, though, is that we live in the information age, and it's only a matter of time before any intellectual property is costless on the internet. Instead of mandating that users connect to the internet and verify their account or something (which can be overcome, anyway–all it really ends up doing is disgruntling the honest fan-base who actually paid) or insisting on copyright protection, I think it better that artists be paid directly, with all intellectual content being subject to being copied and disseminated freely. Essentially, instead of rewarding them directly based off of their success, they're given a payroll. This sounds terrible, actually, but it can be amended to award artists higher payrolls for more successful content, or wean people off if their content hasn't been successful. This way people can "pirate" or copy freely, and the person who made the effort still gets paid. Socialism does have some flaws, but it's the only thing that looks to have solutions to abstract issues that arise in modern times and in the future.
Whether it's done through capitalism or heavy socialism, the government must intervene to ensure the profit of the artist or company. Capitalism's strength is that it has a strong pruning effect. Its weakness is what it prunes. Capitalism is a lot like animalistic nature; the strong prey on the weak. Intelligence is of benefit, but not beyond a particular degree. Socialism is more like humanistic nature; things are moderated according to need (in a primitive, tribal setting) and altruism is employed. Neither one is anti-nature–there's just more than one kind of nature. For example, the nature of lobsters is very different from the nature of bears.
