What I meant about the pagans was that to my understanding the Torah regards gentiles as inteligent animals and thus they are exempt from God's wrath provided they practice the bare basics of human decency. Being abandoned by their god, the Israelites would have been no different to a gentile and therefore "idolatry" would have become acceptable.
