War is creating inventions (in our modern age) because massive amounts of money is being invested in war R&D. Invest the same money in medical research and you have same breakthroughs there. Obviously it's not the war _per se_. One could argue that competition creates inventions (not necessarily true), but there are indeed other ways to achieve high competition than killing each other.
