The problem with the steppes is it's a very thin layer of fragile topsoil made from the sandy grains blown down from Mongolia. Even in medieval times pre industrial permanent farming was enough to kill this topsoil and turn it back into the desert it was made from.
Now they've gone and turned the whole of inner mongolia into the fucking Sahara and it's blowing dust and toxic fertilizers straight into Beijing and then over Japan. They're trying to stop it by planting shit tons of trees.
However i'm having trouble finding a decent source about the "Great Green Wall" because it has largely been a failure and giant waste of money and the chinese government doesn't like talking about it.
