To be fair the USSR did pretty well for a nation that was basically an undeveloped economy before the Revolution and had to deal with everything the Nazis did to it and its people when they invaded.

It was essentially a free market where all enterprise was collective, worker's owned the co-operatives and appointed administrators who were subject to an elected workers council. This was supplemented by strong social spending on education, healthcare, housing, infrastructure, etc.

Let's define what that means.

the problem is that the workers didn't know how to actually manage the marketplace, rather than investing in the businesses they invested in themselves - they usually went on holidays and such while their means of production were getting outdated
