Sure, but when status is determined by material wealth it just cultivates an environment where people will try to make profit by any means possible. Whether that be exploiting the environment for resources, flooding their countries with migrants for cheap labor, provoking conflicts abroad to sell arms, restricting access to necessities like food and medical services, etc.

Having an economy predicated on the endless pursuit of profit just seems harmful and unnecessary.

No matter how many healthy cultural values you try to enforce, it's just a matter of time before one generation gets fed up and throws everything out the window and does their own thing, unraveling decades of hard work.

A discussion about Lena Dunham turned into a discussion about US politics and cronyism. Then the discussion turned to revolution and I gave a pretty epic speech about why a revolution is justified using his own arguments. Then he disconnected.
