I don't know if anyone itt followed the Holla Forums, Holla Forums and /a/ alt-board events but basically the admins of these boards ganged together to trick their userbase into attacking the new boards using many tactics: banning any reference to these alt boards despite claiming to help advertise for alt boards [the unwritten rule being "so long as it doesn't compete with us"], defaming [claiming the board owners are "goons" and other boogeymen], ordering the userbase to spam the board to death, and even getting hotwheelz involved.
Holla Forums is the only viable board on Holla Forums currently, period. And it's still very problematic in some areas: check out the rust threads sometimes. Not a single hint of discussion to be found, just shitflinging and "muh sjw" boogeyman crap. Not a single word about its technical merits, not a single argument against it, yet many attempts to terminate the thread.
But on other topics, Holla Forums actually fairs pretty well, whereas the entire rest of the active Holla Forums userbase is like that of the rust threads. Discussion not allowed, facts not allowed, only feelings. You can rip on 4chan all you want (especially since it's been reddit 2.0 since 2007, and site-wise since 2010), but at least it's still possible, sometimes, to have discussions and arguments, even among the seas of consumerism garbage and paid shills.
The promises of Holla Forums, ultimately, were completely empty. I conclude that a single moderator is needed to manage the mess. Perhaps it works in a federated setting where everyone can just select which leader they want, but not in a free-for-all setting like this one.
