No idea what it's like now but from memory the Sikhs had some legitimate complaints about their place in Indian society in the 70's and 80's, India went through a lot of shit during the 20th century. Some of them were separatists who wanted their own country.

Still though, this was about 30 years ago. I'm not downplaying the Sikh involvement in Air India 182 and I don't think all Sikhs are "based" or whatever – but I do respect their culture and feel that they get it right where a lot of other cultures fail miserably. They're not perfect, but no one really is. Maybe I've just had good luck though.

The Air India bombing is a very fishy affair. It was definitely Sikhs who carried it out, but there's some pretty strong evidence that CSIS (Canada's intelligence agency, literally only a year old babby at the time) allowed it to happen. The agency was in fact monitoring and recording the terrorists in the months up to bombing, but, surprise surprise, they didn't have anyone who could actually translate what was was being said. Years later these recordings, which they admitted to having, mysteriously disappeared.
>210 wiretaps that were recorded during the months before and after the bombing, 156 were erased. These tapes continued to be erased even after the terrorists had become the primary suspects in the bombing.
CSIS had an agent inside the ring that they pulled and later denied even existed despite RCMP claiming otherwise. Witnesses were likewise murdered and their affidavits made inadmissable.
The Indian government warned them of "bombs on planes from Canada. The plane itself was actually scheduled to have bomb-sniffing dogs give it once over before it took off, mysteriously that was called off.

Why allow it to happen? Like I said CSIS was but a year old agency at the time and needed a big event to justify expanding it's budget and reach in otherwise humdrum, mundane Canada. The other accepted answer is that they were just incredibly inept at their jobs (the official line is a "cascading series of errors") to the point where they would monitor and record Sikhs they thought were planning a terrorist attack, have no one on hand to actually translate what was being said and goof up by erasing the wiretaps in what was the biggest single terrorist bombing in history at the time.

The trial for the bombing as also a massive tax payer funded travesty that secured no convictions. I think the costs are well over $60 million, with law enforcement overtime on top of that the actual cost is well over $130 million. So it's not as though Canadian government officials haven't profited in their own way off of this "cascading series of errors". A special, state of the art, bomb-proof courthouse had to be built just to even hold the trial. Why? Because the Sikhs who were testifying against the terrorists were so afraid of their own community they wouldn't testify without it (most of them recanted previous testimony when actually on the stand). As a result, no convictions for those "based" towelheads.
