All in all there is no way they broke even, they took loses from $50M to $100M. Which isn't that big of a deal, except Sony USA keep promising Sony central crazy summer blockbuster hits and keep bringing back operational loses.

The first three were universally beloved. I though they were great, barring the ending of the first and third were actually changed (turns out fleets of star destroyers bombing rebel bases to dust doesn't sit well with (((georgieboy lucas)))). The books are where you find out the emperor was actually the good guy, though there are several writers and they each depict the core characters a little differently. If you're going to read any of them, read the Bounty Hunter trilogy by KW Jeter. His Palpatine is a riot, I actually literally was laughing out loud reading them the first time. Beyond any political stuff, I just didn't think that Episode 7 was a very good movie. It lacked any memorable music (unlike even the prequel trilogy), and was mostly derivative of the first-ever Star Wars movie from '77. It's basically the same plot, but with a girl instead of a guy. I had a lot of other issues with it, too, but I mostly remember sitting in the theatre while the movie was screening opening night and saying to myself, "We gave up the old Expanded Universe for THIS?"

I was hoping that Rogue One would be okay, but all this anti-Trump stuff on Twitter is making me hate it.

Disney takeover ruined the series imo. Episode 7 was very uncreative and almost a copy of episode 4. But this time they relied very much on Harrison Ford to make some moments great, actors didn't really deliver well and the plott was overall terrible.

If you can find the original 3 (before Lucas fucked them up with pointless re-edits and added scenes), they are superb examples of tight yet effective movie editing and pacing. The actual stories and themes are nothing special, it's the way they are told that is amazing.
Every other movie in the francise is completely unremarkable. Decent for filling time and not much else.

1 and 2 had some major flaws and issues.

3 had as huge flaw that it didn't explain things well enough. George should've read his own books and added more detail from the books to it. Also some events in the movie lasted much too short and some details weren't really bought to light (and they should have been). Beyond that the action and animation was really superb in episode 3.

About the expanded universe, they "needed" to remove it, because… Massive spoiler if you actually care, Boba Fett kills Han Solo in a showdown that started over smuggling a cake. Not making that up. So, instead of doing the smart thing and thinking of a new plot, or good new characters that had, well, character (As opposed to "I am a stronk womyn. That is my whole personality.); they instead took the laaaaaaaazy way out and just deleted years of many talented authors' hard work to ram in an old character to carry the plot. The irony of this being that they STILL pissed off all of the hardcore fans. Now that all the older fans are pissed, the franchise has no reliable source of steady money to fall back on when hipster douche libshits get tired of "nerd" culture.

The reason why they had to reshoot many parts of the movie is because of the tone and quality. They said that it was a dark war drama like saving private ryan in space. They wanted a more light hearted and shallow tone to the movie to match episode 8. Executive meddling has never, ever helped a movie at all. I am expecting this one to be a disappointment.
