As much as people like to complain about le happy merchant and the all powerful SJW menace ruining cartoons and comics with diversity, characters with hijabs aren't common in western animation. The only cases I can think of in currently running shows are We Bear Bears, The Loud House, and Home: Adventures with Tip and Oh, and they were all background characters. Executives might feel that a character with a hijab would look too "foreign" and alienate the audience.

I know cartoons with female protags can be successful, but I think they're a harder sell when it comes to pitching it to execs. Even shows like The Loud House and Steven Universe with a largely female cast, still have a male protag. I'm not sure if LH or SU would have gotten off the ground if Lincoln and Steven were girls too.

Superhero and action cartoons aren't big with those networks either. If you remember the DC Nation thing from Cartoon Network, out of all the shorts and shows that were on it (Green Lantern, Beware the Batman, Plastic Man short, Amethyst of Gemworld show, etc) the only thing that survived on that block was Teen Titans Go. The only action toon Nick has is TMNT which is a preexisting property.

Just doesn't seem like it would appeal to a western market to me, nothing to do with culture.

As I mentioned in another reply, our first exposure to cartoons as a whole was through anime. It was part of every 90s/millennial arab kid's childhood and might as well be part of arab culture as a whole.

I'd say that we should wait and see if the episodes are that kind of derivative, since that crap it's annoying. You see it a lot in CN shows like AT and SU, where they really need to let you know that the writers/storyboarders watch anime.

The opening shows what you'll see in the show: Emara fighting crime; you can just ignore it and skip ahead, but if the episodes themselves keep referencing anime like in the opening, we can confirm creative bankruptcy.

I think the person who drew a couple backgrounds was a different person, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Zompie guy had some relation to the project, even if it's just being friends with the crew. I don't imagine the animation scene in UAE is huge, so it might be a case of "everybody knows everybody," but I wouldn't consider his words to be the words of the actual crew.

Yeah, this is a little worrying. The theme song is one thing (Wakfu's theme song had a mario bros question block that no one seemed to mind) but if they single scene of every single episode is "referencing" anime, then that's another thing altogether.

At the very least, if the show is successful despite this, maybe they'll stop doing it in future seasons/projects knowing that people will call them out on this. I want to like this show, and I am hoping it turns out to be good, so this whole thing has taken the wind out of my sails.
