Is the spread of these ideas dangerous as it might attract unwanted attention whilst we're still relatively small, should we be guarding the secret more closely? Or will it be beneficial to this new way of thinking because of the publicity and outreach it gives us.

There's a lot of ambiguity surrounding that term. What I probably should have said was "qliphothic magicians," because these are the types that desperately want any kind of useful occult knowledge hidden.
But anyway, there's lot of different but related ideas out there. Grey magick is probably what you're after if something benefits you and/or other people. I'm guessing you mean it as service to self (STS) = black magick and service to others (STO) = white magick. But different people agree on different terms. For example, "black magick" can be defined as just working with a certain set of planets (planetary magick) or nexuses on the tree of life (namely, the ones on the pillar of severity) for making things go away. In that definition of black magick, it's very healthy and indeed recommended if you do work with the pillar of beauty/mercy.
Of course, a more literal approach meaning visualizing yourself engulfed by darkness as opposed to visualizing yourself surrounded by light does hearken notions that "this is dangerous," because even Satanists will use the bright light of The All to cleanse themselves and chase away negative entities. Visualizing darkness promotes astral parasites, but probably also a means for vampirism. I guess you are what eats you.

Snipe - Memes made to misdirect inquiries. For a long time Ben Garrison had a lot of snipe about him, a great cloud of obfuscation.
Brass Owl - Meme similar to snipe, meant to discern in group from outgroup. Proper characters used to spell Holla Forums for prime example. Itty bitty baby - and other countersigns as well.
This needs to happen in order to weaken the power of meme magic. It was used to its full extent to get the world slowly shifting in the direction we want it. We can't have the strong forces used against these motions so spreading the concept weakens it therefore protecting the strong spells already cast.
