I gave it a shot about a year ago on the advice of my coworker and it was the same story; all of the new features were like a good introduction to base building and resource progression but it's just not quite there. I love resource collecting and base building games and the biggest flaw is that they run out of upgrades and progression content right when your base starts getting intricate. The only exception is Factorio which took me about 40-60 hours just to sprint to the end, but you could easily spend ingame months in that game. Other games like Oxygen Not Included deal with that by adding a ticking clock mechanic, like running out of a resource after a certain point (ie too big of a base to sustain itself). No Man's Sky couldn't really figure out what it wanted to do so they just gave players a casual base building game with the idea that the perk is you get to bask in a beautiful proceduralized world.

I was pretty disappointed with the new Hitman franchise. I started with Blood Money and I was hellbent on getting silent assassin on each mission, and trying to use all of the different scripted mechanics without getting caught. The new franchise takes that away. I'm sure that there are speedrun strats that allow for "silent assassin" type runs but the game basically expects you to kill randos, even on some of the scripted events. It doesn't have the same feel at all.

Characters are unlikable. Graphics aren't as good as everyone's saying. Dialogue is unrealistic. Combat is shit. Only really good part of the game was the enemy design. And even then they're not original in any way.

Tribes 2 was the most disappointing game sequel I've ever seen. All they had to do was update the graphics from the perfection of tribes 1. Instead they changed the already perfect game play completely and had so many bugs the game was completely unplayable the first 6 months. With current Doom when you kill demons with the chainsaw a bunch of brightly coloured objects come out and suddenly you have ammo for no reason. You're literally in a military/science research base so finding weapon storage or dropped weapons from dead guards makes more sense.
