New Cartoon Network pilot Welcome To My Life...

Besides that, this is.. alright, I guess. It's pretty much the most down to Earth, relatable sort of writing for a show about kids in school and day-to-day life, but that also means it's boring as fuck and doesn't really have a lot of substance to it.

So their idea for a kids show is a bland mock documentary about a monster in high school(?) with an uninspired art style dealing with things like racism, "bullying", and what? Life?

At least with some pilots they are so bad they stand out, this is just downright forgettable in every aspect.

It says in the description that it's a short not a pilot.

It's so inoffensive that it loops around to being offensive. The vocal-fry-ridden voice acting and "like, you know, I literally gotta do the thing and stuff, you know…" dialog is fucking obnoxious. Also, that "here's this animal/object/fictional creature that acts as a metaphor for a minority to show you why tolerance is important" shit is trite and condescending, especially if its existence revolves around killing you.

Kinda boring, but nothing to terrible. The minority angle was lame, but I kinda liked that they showed that you can help change someone's mind on a subject through kindness than force. I don't know, kinda a good message. I liked him being part of a sport team and showing that even if your different there will be things people will like about you. It was a 5/10 to be honest. Pretty boring, but it felt less SJW than most CN shows.

I think "genuine" is a good word for this short. It's written in a way that is, for lack of a better term, realistic. Real life is boring and slow and uneventful. School especially so.

A lot of people live vicariously through television and it's led them to have unrealistic expectations of what life should be like. That every day is going to be CUH-RAYZEE. That every relationship will be a whirlwind, love-at-first-sight romance. That teachers will be kooky, vindictive lunatics, out to get you. That you'll have stand up to a bully or get stuffed into a locker.

Sometimes you just go to school and it's kind of like this. Just a sort of shrug and "whatever, I dunno."

Which makes for really fucking boring entertainment.

I was that kid who thought school would be like everything you saw it to be on TV. Instead of having everyday be an adventure the reality is that I had no friends and was bullied a lot.

For some reason, I was happy when that part came. I became really jaded from hearing a lot of media with nihilist anti-theist shit, so hearing that line was a huge relief.

I like the art style pretty well. It's not realistic CG, but it has some great appeal. The writing and the show's documentary format isn't for me, but it has it's place.

Somehow cartoons have become even more sanitized than they already are, this constant safe space, everybody be nice, padded room tier societal shift has resulted in a lack of fiction with any real edge to it. I liked it thought it was pretty chill and relaxing. Not a show a would keep up with but one that I would watch when it's on. Plus I think CN needs a show that isn't all in your face randumb action all the time it could be a nice change of pace for it.

I cannot figure out who the target demographic for this show would be, little kids are going to be thoroughly bored watching it because it's not funny or violent or filled with pop culture references that will be dated in a few months, older kids aren't going to enjoy it because it either is like real life (just with a few monsters in acting like ordinary people) or makes references to shit that isn't relatable depending on how old the school setting is (like I'm pretty sure highschools don't force kids to shower after gym any more and mos schools probably don't have shop class because power tools are DANGEROUS), and anyone 20 and up either aren't going to have time to watch it because they're busy working or wont watch it on their down time because it's neither relatable to their current life nor witty/funny/violent and comes off as dull and pretentious.

Best I remember : The medium is pencil test. Animation is fluid. It begins by the cameraman asking a small girl what she thinks about monsters. The next shot is of a girl monster talking about being a monster in school much like her parents.

Some of the takeaway lines are the dad saying something to the effet of " first of all I'm not a monster, I'm a monster American." It's shot like a ken burns short where they'd drop in panning shots of mother monster being in the french club, things like that. I remember it because it was unusual. It was on that nicktoons channel a while back as filler material.
