Look at how the writers are treating them. Their Hispanic heritage is a big part of their character, and will become one of their main traits with this upcoming episode showcasing their extended family. The only way to make them even more Mexican is for Marco to show up in a cameo.

In all honesty, yes. If they took a spic and portrayed him as being lazy, drug-addicted, or rude, they'd be called racist. If they had no spics at all, they'd still be called racist. The only solution is to have a spic with no real faults - i.e. stupidity, but not too much.

(I honestly like how he turned out, though. Better to have your characters be too likeable than too hateable.)

Neither Penelope nor Clyde have been shown to be spazzy. Obnoxious? Unlikeable? A stain on the show? Clyde is all three. But he isn't hyperactive. He doesn't interrupt people. He doesn't get in anyone's way - except that of the audience.
Here's the thing: Clyde is another one of those "see, we're not racist" characters. You can't have a white Clyde. Being black is half his personality. If he weren't black, the writers would have been forced to make him likeable. As it stands, people pretend to like him because he's black.

I don't really see it being a big part of their character. We don't even know what kind of spic (Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, etc) they are. They never speak Spanish. They aren't obsessed with eating tacos. Their house doesn't have cacti on the lawn or a south western style of build like Marco's house. Does anything about Ronnie's house yell "Latinos definitely live here?" Of course, that could all change in the episode with the extended family. You could make Bobby and Ronnie black or white or Indian or Asian or whatever, and it wouldn't require you to change the things they do or say.

If Bobby and Ronnie Anne didn't have the last name Santiago, everybody would probably think they were ambiguously brown like Brown QT. Before Connie from Steven Universe's last name was revealed, some people assumed she was black instead of Indian.

He's practically as dumb as Leni though. He can't spell his own girlfriend's name (Leni can't spell Lori properly either,) and it isn't like a stupid minority wouldn't be a thing that would cause people to bitch about racism.

You could easily make Clyde white and have him act the same way, but I agree that Clyde is obviously a stereotypical/safe "black nerdy best friend" character. Honestly, they should have just made him more like a male Lynn.
