The US isn't a nation, it's a superstate based around liberalism. Unlike all nations whose forming principle is its people and land, who have gone through different ideologies and regime changes, the United States is based in a particular regime and a particular ideology, the people there are secondary.
Being a Frenchman, a Japanese or an Italian is a matter of blood, being an American is strictly a nationality. It's a matter of holding a meaningless piece of paper that says you're a citizen.
