In American vernacular Liberal=Leftist 100% of the time.
If you're Australian or European then your confusion is understandable.

Leftist politics are anti capitalist, 'liberals' support capitalism in that they do not support it's overthrow. Communists are leftists, liberals are not.

Hillary supporting, LBGQ snowflake liberals do not wish to destroy capitalism as much as Holla Forums wants to think they do, and are not leftists.

I understand that leftists in this country CALL themselves liberal when really they are not. I understand the basis of classical liberalism as a political application individual freedom and free market forces.

My central question is, is there a better way to classify and describe American leftists who delude themselves by professing to be liberals, other than calling them extremist progressive cultural marxist scum?

I'm looking for a way to accurately describe the difference over dinner with leftist relatives without calling them commie jew fucks.

Theoretically if you use the "old definitions" the United States was the original "Liberal" country. Liberal being "at Liberty". Classical Liberalism (not Libertarianism but more paleo-conservatism) is what "Liberal" means. However, unfortunately over time, the terms "Liberal" and "Conservative" took on economic concepts. "Liberal" with the purse-strings aka Socialism; "Conservative" with the purse-strings aka Low Government Expenditures. This can also be looked on as the dependence on the goverment. Liberals are "Heavily" attached to the government, and Conservatives are "Slightly" attached to the government.

The ultimate form of "Liberalism" in that paradigm (flawed and overly simplified I know) is hard core Leftism aka Marxism and Communism- or complete and utter dependence on the Government.

So to answer your question. In today's concepts true liberalism (in reality neo-liberalism) IS leftism. Expansion of the Social Programs ultimately leading to (and usually finishing as) a Marxist state. They are utterly interchangeable and utterly interrelated now. And they all need to be exterminated

basically two different things:

leftist believes in socialism, a way of organizing a society in which production is owned by the government (I'm sure that's going to work out well..)

liberal believes in personal freedom without responsibility (wew, that's a good combination), and equality of people (kek, I know)

It's all part of the same progression to degeneracy. Even Thomas Carlyle came down on the laissez-faire crowd.

So many of these anti-leftist movements pick such arbitrary roadblocks in search for a better civilization.

I know what leftist cultural destroyers are and I know what classical liberals turned modern day paleoconseratives are.

Leftist is more broad and liberal is a specific ideology. A communist for example is a leftist but not a liberal. You can also expand liberal broadly across the left and right spectrum to include everyone that's not a fascist or a communist.

Centre right are liberals, centre left are liberals. Far right like paleocons and white nationalists are liberals. Far left like social democrats are liberals. To not be a liberal you have to reject the tenets of liberalism. Both communists and fascist do.

Same thing, a liberal is just a leftist who hasn't taken the commie pill and wants to "have a debate". A liberal wants a debate so they can status signal, but once they get an actual debate (which they lose) they take the commie pill and try to make sure anyone smarter than them isn't allowed to talk.

It really depends on the context. A leftist just talks about somebody who is on the "left side" of the political compass. A liberal is essentially someone who stepped away from traditional values. In modern vernacular, "liberal" often refers to a democrat, or the values of the democratic party (at least in the U.S.). A classical liberal (aka the founding fathers, and enlightenment movement), were people who stepped away from tradition. Essentially that is it. A liberal is somebody who steps away from traditional law (the law of man and nature), the severity of which depends on context. It can mean a lot of different things today, because we have become so divorced from the tradition of man, and the natural hierarchies. The words are mostly interchangeable.

OP is correct that classical liberalism favoured laissez faire and right economics.
Leftists might call themselves liberals, but they usually aren't. The left and right spectrum is about the regulation (or total lack of) of wealth. So when some democrat leftist says you can't have guns, they sure as hell aren't a true liberal.
